It was used by the priests for ceremonial washing before they performed their duties, symbolizing purification and the need for holiness when approaching God. The use of bronze, a durable and reflective material, signifies judgment and strength. The basin's construction follows the detailed instructions given to Moses on Mount Sinai, emphasizing the importance of obedience to God's commands in worship practices.<p><b>from the mirrors of the women</b><br>The mirrors mentioned here were likely made of polished bronze, as glass mirrors were not common in the ancient Near East. These mirrors were personal items, indicating a significant sacrifice by the women who donated them. This act of giving up personal possessions for the service of God reflects a heart of devotion and willingness to contribute to the communal worship life of Israel. It also highlights the role of women in the religious life of the community, showing their active participation and dedication.<p><b>who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting</b><br>The women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting were likely involved in some form of ministry or service, although the exact nature of their duties is not specified. Their presence at the entrance suggests a role in maintaining the sanctity and order of the worship space. This service can be seen as a precursor to the New Testament concept of the priesthood of all believers, where both men and women are called to serve God. The Tent of Meeting, also known as the Tabernacle, was the central place of worship for the Israelites during their wilderness journey, symbolizing God's dwelling among His people.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/b/bezalel.htm">Bezalel</a></b><br>The chief artisan of the Tabernacle, appointed by God to oversee its construction, including the making of the bronze basin.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/w/women_who_served.htm">Women who served</a></b><br>These women contributed their mirrors for the making of the basin, indicating their dedication and service at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/b/bronze_basin.htm">Bronze Basin</a></b><br>A significant piece of the Tabernacle used for ceremonial washing by the priests, symbolizing purification.<br><br>4. <b><a href="/topical/t/tent_of_meeting.htm">Tent of Meeting</a></b><br>The sacred place where God met with Moses and where the Israelites worshiped during their wilderness journey.<br><br>5. <b><a href="/topical/m/mirrors.htm">Mirrors</a></b><br>Made of polished bronze, these were valuable personal items that the women willingly gave up for the construction of the basin.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/s/sacrificial_giving.htm">Sacrificial Giving</a></b><br>The women gave up their valuable mirrors for the construction of the basin, teaching us about the importance of sacrificial giving for God's work.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/p/purification_and_holiness.htm">Purification and Holiness</a></b><br>The bronze basin symbolizes the need for purification before approaching God, reminding us of the importance of spiritual cleanliness and holiness in our lives.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/r/role_of_women_in_ministry.htm">Role of Women in Ministry</a></b><br>The contribution of the women highlights the significant role women play in ministry and service to God.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/t/transformation_through_service.htm">Transformation through Service</a></b><br>Just as the mirrors were transformed into a basin, our lives can be transformed through service and dedication to God's purposes.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/r/reflecting_god's_glory.htm">Reflecting God's Glory</a></b><br>The mirrors, once used for personal reflection, became a tool for divine service, encouraging us to reflect God's glory in our lives.<div class="vheading2">Lists and Questions</div><a href="/top10/lessons_from_exodus_38.htm">Top 10 Lessons from Exodus 38</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/how_do_mirrors_fit_ancient_tech_practices.htm">Exodus 38:8 describes the use of women’s mirrors in creating the bronze basin; how does this detail align with known technological practices of that era?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/purpose_of_the_bronze_laver.htm">What was the purpose of the bronze laver?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/bible_on_mutual_consent_in_marriage.htm">What was the laver's purpose in the tabernacle?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/what_was_the_laver's_role.htm">What was the laver's purpose in the tabernacle?</a><a name="commentary" id="commentary"></a><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/ellicott/exodus/38.htm">Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers</a></div>(8) <span class= "bld">He made the laver of brass.</span>--Comp. <a href="/context/exodus/30-18.htm" title="You shall also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash with: and you shall put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and you shall put water therein.">Exodus 30:18-21</a>, where the laver is commanded, and the uses whereto it was to be applied are laid down. Bronze was the metal ordinarily employed for the purpose, and was in common use in Egypt, where mirrors were bronze plates, round or oval, with a handle, like our fire-screens. The Etruscan women employed similar articles in their toilets, and had them often delicately chased with engravings.<p><span class= "bld">Of the women assembling.</span>--It would seem that these women--the women wont to frequent the "tent of meeting" which Moses had recently set up (<a href="/exodus/33-7.htm" title="And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. Moses, to mark his approval of their devotion, formed their offerings into the most honourable of all the brazen vessels, and recorded the fact to the women's credit.<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/exodus/38.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 8.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">Of the looking-glasses of the women</span>. This interesting fact has not been previously mentioned. Bronze plates, circular or oval, admitting of a high polish, were used by the Egyptian women as mirrors from a very early date, and may be seen in the Egyptian collection of the British Museum. They have handles like those of our fire-screens, generally also of bronze. It was natural that the Hebrew women should possess similar articles, and should have taken care to bring them with them out of Egypt. The sacrifice of them for a sacred purpose is rather to be ascribed to their own serf-denying piety than to any command issued by Moses (Spencer). <span class="cmt_word">Which assembled</span>. Literally, "who came by troops." Women assembled themselves by troops at the entrance of the "tent of meeting" set up lay. Moses (<a href="/exodus/33-7.htm">Exodus 33:7</a>), as at a later date we find Hannah (<a href="/1_samuel/1-9.htm">1 Samuel 1:9-12</a>) and other women who were less worthy (<a href="/1_samuel/2-22.htm">1 Samuel 2:22</a>) doing. The women who showed this zeal were those that made the sacrifice of their mirrors for God's service. There is no reason to suppose (with Hengstenberg and others) that they constituted a regular "order." <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/exodus/38-8.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Next, he made</span><br /><span class="heb">וַיַּ֗עַשׂ</span> <span class="translit">(way·ya·‘aś)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6213.htm">Strong's 6213: </a> </span><span class="str2">To do, make</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the bronze</span><br /><span class="heb">נְחֹ֔שֶׁת</span> <span class="translit">(nə·ḥō·šeṯ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5178.htm">Strong's 5178: </a> </span><span class="str2">Copper, something made of that metal, coin, a fetter, base</span><br /><br /><span class="word">basin</span><br /><span class="heb">הַכִּיּ֣וֹר</span> <span class="translit">(hak·kî·yō·wr)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3595.htm">Strong's 3595: </a> </span><span class="str2">Pot, basin</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and its stand</span><br /><span class="heb">כַּנּ֣וֹ</span> <span class="translit">(kan·nōw)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3653.htm">Strong's 3653: </a> </span><span class="str2">A stand, pedestal, station</span><br /><br /><span class="word">from the mirrors</span><br /><span class="heb">בְּמַרְאֹת֙</span> <span class="translit">(bə·mar·’ōṯ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-b | Noun - feminine plural construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4759.htm">Strong's 4759: </a> </span><span class="str2">A vision, a mirror</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of the women who</span><br /><span class="heb">אֲשֶׁ֣ר</span> <span class="translit">(’ă·šer)</span><br /><span class="parse">Pronoun - relative<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_834.htm">Strong's 834: </a> </span><span class="str2">Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order that</span><br /><br /><span class="word">served</span><br /><span class="heb">הַצֹּ֣בְאֹ֔ת</span> <span class="translit">(haṣ·ṣō·ḇə·’ōṯ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - feminine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6633.htm">Strong's 6633: </a> </span><span class="str2">To wage war, serve</span><br /><br /><span class="word">at the entrance</span><br /><span class="heb">פֶּ֖תַח</span> <span class="translit">(pe·ṯaḥ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6607.htm">Strong's 6607: </a> </span><span class="str2">An opening, door, entrance way</span><br /><br /><span class="word">to the Tent</span><br /><span class="heb">אֹ֥הֶל</span> <span class="translit">(’ō·hel)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_168.htm">Strong's 168: </a> </span><span class="str2">A tent</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of Meeting.</span><br /><span class="heb">מוֹעֵֽד׃</span> <span class="translit">(mō·w·‘êḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4150.htm">Strong's 4150: </a> </span><span class="str2">Appointed time, place, or meeting</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/exodus/38-8.htm">Exodus 38:8 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/exodus/38-8.htm">OT Law: Exodus 38:8 He made the basin of brass (Exo.
