The "world" here refers to the system of values and beliefs that are opposed to God, often influenced by sin and under the sway of Satan (1 John 5:19). Historically, early Christians faced persecution from both Jewish authorities and the Roman Empire, as seen in Acts and the letters of Paul. This opposition is not just historical but continues in various forms today. The hatred from the world is a result of the believer's identification with Christ, who stands in contrast to worldly values.
understand that it hated Me first
Jesus reminds His followers that the animosity they experience is not new; it was first directed at Him. This serves as a comfort and a call to perseverance. Jesus' own life was marked by rejection and hostility, culminating in His crucifixion. This phrase connects to prophecies such as Isaiah 53, which foretells the suffering of the Messiah. It also aligns with Jesus' earlier teachings in the Gospels, where He warned His disciples of coming persecution (Matthew 10:22). The hatred towards Jesus was due to His challenge to the religious and social norms of His time, His claim to divinity, and His call to repentance. Believers are called to follow in His footsteps, bearing the same reproach for the sake of the Gospel.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The speaker of this verse, Jesus is addressing His disciples, preparing them for the persecution they will face as His followers.

2. The Disciples
The immediate audience of Jesus' message, representing all believers who follow Christ.

3. The World
Refers to the secular, unbelieving society that is often in opposition to God's kingdom and values.

4. The Upper Room Discourse
The context of this teaching, where Jesus shares His final instructions and encouragements with His disciples before His crucifixion.

5. Persecution of Believers
The event and reality that Jesus is preparing His disciples for, which has been a consistent theme throughout Christian history.
Teaching Points
Understanding the Source of Hatred
Recognize that the world's hatred is rooted in its opposition to Christ and His teachings.

Expect Persecution
As followers of Christ, anticipate opposition and persecution as a natural consequence of living out your faith.

Find Comfort in Christ's Example
Take solace in knowing that Jesus Himself faced the world's hatred and overcame it, providing a model for us to follow.

Strengthen Your Faith Community
Lean on fellow believers for support and encouragement when facing the world's hostility.

Live with Eternal Perspective
Focus on the eternal rewards and promises of God, rather than the temporary trials and opposition from the world.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from John 15

Why are they marginalized and misunderstood by society?

John 15:18–19: If the world is supposed to hate followers of Jesus, how do we explain periods in history when Christianity had widespread acceptance and power?

Why are they marginalized and misunderstood by society?

What was the Decian Persecution?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(18) If the world hate you.--He has spoken of their close union with Himself, and of their love to each other.
