Old English had <span class="foreign notranslate">ciris</span> "cherry" from a West Germanic borrowing of the Vulgar Latin word (cognate with German <span class="foreign notranslate">Kirsch</span>), but it died out after the Norman invasion and was replaced by the French word.</p> <p>Short for <span class="foreign notranslate">cherry-tree</span> from 1620s.
