He has served as a professor at Purdue (2000-2005), Brown (2005-2012), and Northeastern (2012-2021; serving as Chemical Engineering Department Chair from 2012 - 2019) Universities and has formed over a dozen companies who have numerous FDA approved medical products currently improving human health. His work includes applied laboratory and field studies and has led to 30 books (authored/edited) and over 300 published articles. From 2000 to 2008, he was listed as one of the most cited scientists in the fields of Environmental Studies and Ecology. He was the director of the Environmental Health Program from 1996 to 2006, and has been active in a number of community-based organizations. Before joining the department in 1993, he was a research scientist with Environment Canada, Burlington, Ontario. Prof. Nriagu was the Editor-in-chief of the journal Science of the Total Environment (one of the leading environmental science journals), Editor-in-chief of Encyclopedia of Environmental Health (in five volumes) published in 2011, and the editor of book series published by Wiley-Interscience (New York), Elsevier Science (Amsterdam), and Maralte Publishers (Leiden). In 1987, he was awarded the first ever meritorious Doctor of Science degree by the University of Ibadan (Nigeria). Prof. Nriagu is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He received an MD in 1972, and a MS in neurophysiology in 1974, from University of Maryland, and did his residency training in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1972 to 1975. Dr. Hendler was Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for 31 years, and Associate Professor of Physiology at University of Maryland School of Dental Surgery. He was clinical director of Mensana Clinic from 1978 to 2006, which was listed in Business Week as one of the 8 best pain clinics in the United States, along with Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Cleveland Clinic. He has published four books, 34 textbook chapters, and 71 articles. He was past president of the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Association of America, and of the American Academy of Pain Management. He has lectured in 11 countries, and 50 medical schools and hospitals in the United States. He has testified before the US Senate three times on medical issues for Senator Edward Kennedy, Senator Barbara Mikulski, and Senator Howard Metzenbaum. Recently, Dr. Hendler developed â€œExpert Systems,â€ for use over the Internet, based on research showing that 40%-80% of chronic pain patients are misdiagnosed. The Pain Validity Test predicts with 95% accuracy which patient will have abnormal medical tests. The Pain Diagnostic Paradigm and Treatment Algorithm gives diagnoses with a 96% correlation with diagnoses of Johns Hopkins Hospital doctors, and recommends the proper diagnostic tests to use. The Headache Diagnostic Test has a 94 % correlation with diagnoses of Johns Hopkins Hospital doctors. He is a Professor, the inaugural Head of the Section of Community Psychiatry and the Coordinator of the Medical Humanities Program, all in the Department of Psychiatry, and is cross-appointed in the Department of Bioethics and in the School of Occupational Therapy, all at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where he is a Director of the Research in Medicine program. He is the Clinical Director of the Nova Scotia Operational Stress Injury Clinic. He is a Canadian Certified Physician Executive and a Certified Psychiatric/Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Practitioner. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Research Canada and the Chair of its Task Force on Indigenous and Racial Justice in Health Research and Related Innovation, the Chair of the Public Policy Committee of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the Chair of the Policy and Health Issues Committee of Doctors Nova Scotia, among other provincial and national committee memberships. He is a recipient of the pioneer award in recovery research granted by Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) /RÃ©adaptation Psychosociale (RPS) Canada and of the Michael Smith award granted by the Schizophrenia Society of Canada, as well as a Distinguished Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Fellow and Gold Medalist of the European Society for Person Centered Healthcare. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Mental Health and the founder of the Canadian Unit of the International Network of a UNESCO Chair in Bioethics. His clinical academic and leadership expertise includes person-centered mental health services, psychiatric/psychosocial rehabilitation, digital mental health services, social determinants of health, health care administration, bioethics and philosophy of health. He is a member of various professional organizations, including the Canadian Professional Counsellors' Association (CPCA), the Canadian Association of Psychodynamic Therapy (CAPT), the National Guild of Hypnotists (USA), and the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, Canada (CRPO). Atul has worked with thousands of clients with mental health issues for over 20 years and has completed more than 25,000 sessions. He has a success rate of around 90%, including the disintegration of a tumour. Atul is also a naturopath, a member and founder of Esculapio alternative medicine school in Quito, Ecuador, and a qualified Autogenous Training of Self Hypnosis instructor certified by Sociedad Ecuatoriana de Hipnosis terapeutica y Hipnopedia. He has been initiated as a Grand Master Reiki and Master Karuna Reiki. Atul's field of investigation is the human mind and how it works on subliminal messages with binaural tones and inspirational movies to improve the quality of life. He has created a course on advanced hypnosis techniques based on covert communication and is creating a pathway to guide others through "yoga beyond duality." Atul has participated in moderated panel discussion videos with Dr. John Gray (the author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus) on diverse topics and has spoken on the same platform as Dr. Deepak Chopra. He has written many articles in local magazines and newspapers, appeared as a guest speaker on hundreds of TV and radio shows in different languages, and was a keynote speaker for national and international conferences. Atul has gained deep insights into the unconscious mind through his 20 years of experience working with it. His experiences have made him realize the importance of totality and further opened pathways to understanding the importance of pain and love as consciousness and not as emotions. He writes and speaks internationally on "The Need for Disease." Atul enjoys playing chess, reading, and writing in his leisure time. He also teaches yoga and dancing meditation and is a huge soccer fan. He loves to travel and meet people and is fluent in Spanish, English, Hindi, and Punjabi. He also speaks a little French. MDC is an organization that aims to improve mortality surveillance systems worldwide by utilizing a novel data collection method called Verbal Autopsy. We take part in global partnerships to implement the Verbal Autopsy method to increase mortality surveillance in underserved regions of the world that may be lacking these systems.
