The concept of kingdoms is central to the narrative of the Bible, encompassing the rule of human monarchs as well as the sovereign reign of God.

Earthly Kingdoms

Throughout the Old Testament, various earthly kingdoms play significant roles in the unfolding account of God's people. The most prominent of these is the Kingdom of Israel, established under the leadership of King Saul, and later expanded and solidified by King David and his son Solomon. The united monarchy of Israel is described in 1 Samuel through 1 Kings and 1 Chronicles through 2 Chronicles. Under Solomon, the kingdom reached its zenith in terms of wealth, influence, and territorial expansion. However, following Solomon's reign, the kingdom was divided into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah (1 Kings 12).

The Bible also references other significant kingdoms, such as Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. These kingdoms often interacted with Israel and Judah, sometimes as oppressors and other times as instruments of God's judgment or deliverance. For instance, the Babylonian Empire, under King Nebuchadnezzar, conquered Jerusalem and led the people of Judah into exile (2 Kings 25). The Persian Empire, under King Cyrus, later allowed the exiles to return and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem (Ezra 1:1-4).

The Kingdom of God

In contrast to earthly kingdoms, the Kingdom of God is a central theme in both the Old and New Testaments. It represents God's sovereign rule over all creation and His redemptive plan for humanity. The prophets of the Old Testament, such as Isaiah and Daniel, spoke of a future kingdom where God's justice and peace would prevail (Isaiah 9:6-7; Daniel 2:44).

In the New Testament, the Kingdom of God is a focal point of Jesus' teaching. He proclaimed the arrival of the kingdom, calling people to repentance and faith (Mark 1:15). Jesus' parables often illustrated the nature and value of the Kingdom of God, emphasizing its spiritual and eternal aspects (Matthew 13:44-46). The Kingdom of God is not of this world, as Jesus explained to Pilate, indicating its divine origin and purpose (John 18:36).

The apostolic writings further expound on the Kingdom of God, highlighting its present reality and future fulfillment. Believers are called to live as citizens of this kingdom, embodying its values and awaiting its consummation at Christ's return (Philippians 3:20-21; Revelation 11:15).

Theological Significance

The concept of kingdoms in the Bible underscores the tension between human authority and divine sovereignty. Earthly kingdoms, with their temporal power and influence, often stand in contrast to the eternal and righteous reign of God. The biblical narrative reveals that while human kingdoms rise and fall, the Kingdom of God endures forever. This theme encourages believers to place their ultimate hope and allegiance in God's unshakeable kingdom, as expressed in Hebrews 12:28: "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe."
Greek
932. basileia -- kingdom, sovereignty, royal power
... Word Origin from basileuo Definition kingdom, sovereignty, royal power NASB Word
Usage kingdom (159), kingdoms (3), reigns* (1). kingdom, reign. ...
//strongsnumbers.com/greek2/932.htm - 7k
Strong's Hebrew
4467. mamlakah -- kingdom, sovereignty, dominion, reign
... Word Origin from the same as melek Definition kingdom, sovereignty, dominion, reign
NASB Word Usage dominion (1), kingdom (58), kingdoms (48), reign (2), royal ...
/hebrew/4467.htm - 6k
4437. malku -- royalty, reign, kingdom
... Word Origin (Aramaic) corresponding to malkuth Definition royalty, reign, kingdom
NASB Word Usage government affairs (1), kingdom (38), kingdoms (3), realm (4 ...
/hebrew/4437.htm - 6k
4438. malkuth -- royalty, royal power, reign, kingdom
... Word Origin from the same as melek Definition royalty, royal power, reign, kingdom
NASB Word Usage kingdom (41), kingdoms (2), kingship (1), realm (3), reign ...
/hebrew/4438.htm - 6k
Library

And as in the Kingdoms of Earth we are in no Wise Constrained ...
... Book III. 3 And as in the kingdoms of earth we are in no wise constrained
expressly to?
