and when any<MH3605> man<MH376> who<MH834> had<MH1961> a lawsuit<MH7379> was to come<MH935> before<MH413> the king<MH4428> for judgment<MH4941>, Absalom<MH53> would call<MH7121> out<MH7121> to him and say<MH559>, &#8220;From what<MH2088, 335> city<MH5892b> are you?&#8221; And he would say<MH559>, &#8220;Your servant<MH5650> is from one<MH259> of the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then Absalom<MH53> would say<MH559> to him, &#8220;See<MH7200>, your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>claims<MH1697> are good<MH2896a> and right<MH5228>, but you have no<MH369> one to listen<MH8085> to you on the part<MH4480, 854> of the king<MH4428>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Moreover, Absalom<MH53> would say<MH559>, &#8220;Oh<MH4310> that someone would appoint<MH7760> me judge<MH8199> in the land<MH776>, then every<MH3605> man<MH376> who<MH834> has<MH1961> a lawsuit<MH7379> or claim<MH4941> could come<MH935> to me, and I would give<MH6663> him justice<MH6663>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And whenever a man<MH376> approached<MH7126> to prostrate<MH2331c> himself before him, he would put<MH7971> out<MH7971> his hand<MH3027> and take<MH2388> hold<MH2388> of him and kiss<MH5401a> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Absalom<MH53> dealt<MH6213a> this<MH2088> way<MH1697> with all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> who<MH834> came<MH935> to the king<MH4428> for judgment<MH4941>; so Absalom<MH53> stole<MH1589> the hearts<MH3820> of the people<MH376> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> at the end<MH7093> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>four<MH705> years<MH8141> that Absalom<MH53> said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> let me go<MH1980> and pay<MH7999a> my vow<MH5088> which<MH834> I have made<MH5087> to the LORD<MH3068>, in Hebron<MH2275a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For your servant<MH5650> made<MH5087> a vow<MH5088> while I was living<MH3427> in Geshur<MH1650> in Aram<MH758>, saying<MH559>, &#8216;If<MH518> the LORD<MH3068> will indeed<MH7725> bring<MH7725> me back<MH7725> to Jerusalem<MH3389>, then I will serve<MH5647> the LORD<MH3068>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Go<MH1980> in peace<MH7965>.&#8221; So he got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and went<MH1980> to Hebron<MH2275a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But Absalom<MH53> sent<MH7971> spies<MH7270> throughout<MH3605> the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;As soon as you hear<MH8085> the sound<MH6963> of the trumpet<MH7782>, then you shall say<MH559>, &#8216;Absalom<MH53> is<MH4427a> king<MH4427a> in Hebron<MH2275a>!&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then two hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> went<MH1980> with Absalom<MH53> from Jerusalem<MH3389>, who were invited<MH7121> and went<MH1980> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>innocently<MH8537>, for they did not know<MH3045> anything<MH3605, 1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Absalom<MH53> sent<MH7971> for Ahithophel<MH302> the Gilonite<MH1526>, David&#8217;s<MH1732> counselor<MH3289>, from his city<MH5892b> Giloh<MH1542>, while he was offering<MH2076> the sacrifices<MH2077>. And the conspiracy<MH7195> was strong<MH533>, for the people<MH5971a> continually<MH1980> increased<MH7227a> with Absalom<MH53>. <p class="hdg">David Flees Jerusalem</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then a messenger<MH5046> came<MH935> to David<MH1732>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;The hearts<MH3820> of the people<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>with Absalom<MH53>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> said<MH559> to all<MH3605> his servants<MH5650> who<MH834> were with him in Jerusalem<MH3389>, &#8220;Arise<MH6965> and let&#8217;s flee<MH1272>, for <i>otherwise</i> none<MH3808> of us will escape<MH6413> from Absalom<MH53>. Go<MH1980> quickly<MH4116>, or<MH6435> he will hurry<MH4116> and overtake<MH5381> us, and bring<MH5080> disaster<MH5080, 7463a> on us and strike<MH5221> the city<MH5892b> with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then the king&#8217;s<MH4428> servants<MH5650> said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, your servants<MH5650> <i>will do</i> whatever<MH3605, 834> my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> chooses<MH977>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> left<MH3318>, and all<MH3605> his household<MH1004> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>with him; but the king<MH4428> left<MH5800a> ten<MH6235> concubines<MH6370> behind<MH5800a> to take<MH8104> care<MH8104> of the house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> left<MH3318>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>with him, and they stopped<MH5975> at the last<MH4801> house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now all<MH3605> of his servants<MH5650> passed<MH5674a> by<MH5674a> beside<MH5921, 3027> him, and all<MH3605> the Cherethites<MH3774>, all<MH3605> the Pelethites<MH6432>, and all<MH3605> the Gittites<MH1663>, six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> who<MH834> had come<MH935> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>with him from Gath<MH1661>, passed<MH5674a> by<MH5674a> before<MH6440> the king<MH4428>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to Ittai<MH863a> the Gittite<MH1663>, &#8220;Why<MH4100> should you go<MH1980> with us too<MH1571>? Return<MH7725> and stay<MH3427> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>your king<MH4428>, since<MH3588> you are a foreigner<MH5237> and an exile<MH1540> as<MH1571> well<MH1571>; <i>return</i> to your own place<MH4725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>You came<MH935> <i>only</i> yesterday<MH8543>, so should I make you wander<MH5128> with us today<MH3117>, while I go<MH1980> wherever<MH5921, 834> I go<MH1980>? Return<MH7725> and take<MH7725> your brothers<MH251> back<MH7725>; mercy<MH2617a> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>truth<MH571> be with you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But Ittai<MH863a> answered<MH6030a> the king<MH4428> and said<MH559>, &#8220;As the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, and as my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> lives<MH2416a>, wherever<MH4725, 834, 8033> my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> may be, whether<MH518> for death<MH4194> or<MH518> for life<MH2425b>, there<MH8033> assuredly<MH3588, 518> shall your servant<MH5650> be!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Ittai<MH863a>, &#8220;Go<MH1980> and cross<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> <i>the brook Kidron.</i>&#8221; So Ittai<MH863a> the Gittite<MH1663> crossed<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> with all<MH3605> his men<MH376> and all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>little<MH2945> ones<MH2945> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>While all<MH3605> the country<MH776> was weeping<MH1058> with a loud<MH1419> voice<MH6963>, all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> were crossing<MH5674a> over<MH5674a>. The king<MH4428> was also crossing<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> the brook<MH5158a> Kidron<MH6939>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> were crossing<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> toward<MH5921, 6440> the way<MH1870> of the wilderness<MH4057b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now behold<MH2009>, Zadok<MH6659> also<MH1571> <i>came,</i> and all<MH3605> the Levites<MH3881> with him, carrying<MH5375> the ark<MH727> of the covenant<MH1285> of God<MH430>. And they set<MH3322> down<MH3322> the ark<MH727> of God<MH430>, and Abiathar<MH54> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> until<MH5704> all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> had finished<MH8552> crossing<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> from the city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to Zadok<MH6659>, &#8220;Return<MH7725> the ark<MH727> of God<MH430> to the city<MH5892b>. If<MH518> I find<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068>, then He will bring<MH7725> me back<MH7725> and show<MH7200> me <i>both</i> it and His habitation<MH5116a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But if<MH518> He says<MH559> this<MH3541>: &#8216;I have<MH2654a> no<MH3808> delight<MH2654a> in you,&#8217; <i>then</i> here<MH2009> I am, let Him do<MH6213a> to me as seems good<MH2895> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>to Him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> also said<MH559> to Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548>, &#8220;Are you <i>not</i> a seer<MH7203a>? Return<MH7725> to the city<MH5892b> in peace<MH7965>, and your two<MH8147> sons<MH1121> with you, your son<MH1121> Ahimaaz<MH290> and Jonathan<MH3083> the son<MH1121> of Abiathar<MH54>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>See<MH7200>, I am going to wait<MH4102> at the river<MH5679> crossing<MH5679> places<MH5679> of the wilderness<MH4057b> until<MH5704> word<MH1697> comes<MH935> from you to inform<MH5046> me.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>So Zadok<MH6659> and Abiathar<MH54> returned<MH7725> the ark<MH727> of God<MH430> to Jerusalem<MH3389> and remained<MH3427> there<MH8033>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> was going<MH5927> up<MH5927> the ascent<MH4608> of the <i>Mount of</i> Olives<MH2132>, weeping<MH1058> as he went<MH5927>, and his head<MH7218> was covered<MH2645>, and he was walking<MH1980> barefoot<MH3182>. Then all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were with him each<MH376> covered<MH2645> his own head<MH7218>, and they were going<MH5927> up<MH5927>, weeping<MH1058> as they went<MH5927>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Now <i>someone</i> informed<MH5046> David<MH1732>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Ahithophel<MH302> is among the conspirators<MH7194> with Absalom<MH53>.&#8221; And David<MH1732> said<MH559>, &#8220;LORD<MH3068>, please<MH4994> make<MH5528> the advice<MH6098> of Ahithophel<MH302> foolish<MH5528>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>It happened<MH1961> as David<MH1732> was coming<MH935> to the summit<MH7218>, where<MH834, 8033> God<MH430> was worshiped<MH2331c>, that behold<MH2009>, Hushai<MH2365> the Archite<MH757> met<MH7122> him with his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>coat<MH3801> torn<MH7167>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>dust<MH127> on his head<MH7218>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;If<MH518> you go<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> with me, then you will become<MH1961> a burden<MH4853a> to me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you return<MH7725> to the city<MH5892b> and say<MH559> to Absalom<MH53>, &#8216;I will be your servant<MH5650>, O king<MH4428>; even <i>as</i> I was your father&#8217;s<MH1> servant<MH5650> in time<MH227> past<MH3975b>, so now<MH6258> I will also be your servant<MH5650>,&#8217; then you can foil<MH6565a> the advice<MH6098> of Ahithophel<MH302> for me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/15-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Are Zadok<MH6659> and Abiathar<MH54> the priests<MH3548> not with you there<MH8033>?
