East Tennessee, dominated geographically by the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Great-Smoky-Mountains" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Great Smoky Mountains</a> and the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Cumberland-Plateau" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Cumberland Plateau</a> (also called Cumberland Mountains), is the home of the state’s well-known mountain traditions. <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Chattanooga" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Chattanooga</a>, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Knoxville" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Knoxville</a>, and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Kingsport" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Kingsport</a> are East Tennessee’s major population centers. Middle Tennessee has level, fertile land interrupted regularly by gently rolling hills; it traditionally has been a balanced agricultural and commercial region, with Nashville as its main urban center. West Tennessee is mainly flat land with rich soil and long has had an economy based on plantation agriculture, notably cotton. In response to the challenges on the frontier, white settlers in Tennessee developed a strongly independent attitude that has revealed itself often in state and national politics. Tennessean <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Andrew-Jackson" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Andrew Jackson</a>, hero of the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/War-of-1812" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">War of 1812</a> and seventh president of the United States, led the Democratic Party of the 1830s to become the party of the common people, a path similarly pursued by his fellow Tennessean and U.S. president in the 1840s, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/James-K-Polk" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">James K. Polk</a>. Strongly divided by the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/American-Civil-War" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">American Civil War</a> and its own version of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/Reconstruction-United-States-history" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Reconstruction</a>, Tennessee became a part of the solid <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Democratic-Party" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Democratic</a> South, and, like much of that region, it lagged behind the rest of the country in wealth and <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="prestige" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/prestige" data-type="MW">prestige</a>. The dreams of the industrialists of the late 19th century were not realized until later in the 20th, when <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/World-War-II" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">World War II</a> and spending by the national government fueled new kinds of industrial activity. By the early 21st century, a strong <a href="https://www.britannica.com/money/service-industry" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">service sector</a> had developed. Also by this time, the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Republican-Party" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Republican Party</a> had won the favor of many Tennesseans, and Tennessee became once again a two-party state. Although still <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="diverse" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/diverse" data-type="MW">diverse</a> within its own borders, Tennessee had clearly begun to merge economically and politically with the rest of the country.
