It is first introduced in the Book of Exodus as part of the instructions given by God to Moses for the construction of the Tabernacle.<br><br><b>Biblical Description and Construction</b><br><br>The Lampstand is described in <a href="/exodus/25-31.htm">Exodus 25:31-40</a>. It was to be made of pure gold, hammered out to form a base, shaft, branches, cups, buds, and blossoms. The Lampstand had six branches extending from its sides, three on each side, with a central shaft, making a total of seven lamps. The design was intricate, with almond blossom motifs, symbolizing life and light.<br><br><a href="/exodus/25-37.htm">Exodus 25:37</a> states, "Then make its seven lamps and set them up on the lampstand so that they illuminate the area in front of it." The Lampstand was to be placed in the Holy Place of the Tabernacle, opposite the table of showbread, and was to be kept burning continually as a perpetual statute (<a href="/exodus/27-20.htm">Exodus 27:20-21</a>).<br><br><b>Symbolism and Function</b><br><br>The Lampstand served both a practical and symbolic function. In the Temple, ten lampstands were made of gold, five on the south side and five on the north, indicating an expansion and enhancement of the Tabernacle’s single Lampstand.<br><br><b>New Testament References</b><br><br>In the New Testament, the imagery of the Lampstand is carried forward in the Book of Revelation. <a href="/revelation/1-12.htm">Revelation 1:12-13</a> describes a vision of seven golden lampstands, with Christ standing among them.
