are building up rather nicely to the US Masters, the season’s first major championship on the men’s tour.<\/p><p>It might still be a month or so away, but already American Scottie Scheffler is being touted as the player to beat.<\/p><p>The undisputed world No. 1 has Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy installed as the second seed in the eyes of many, with two-time major winner Jon Rahm of Spain the next best-backed player, alongside Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg – a player with two wins on the US PGA Tour and seeking his breakthrough in the majors.<\/p><p>Xander Schauffele, who won both of his majors last season – the PGA Championship and the British Open – is also expected to be in the mix, with his American compatriots Collin Morikawa and Bryson DeChambeau on the first page of the leaderboard.<\/p><p>Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, winner at Augusta National in 2021, and five-time major champion Brooks Koepka have likewise received good support ahead of the showdown that will begin on April 10.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Most of the stars tipped to shine at the Masters are in action this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Florida, on the PGA Tour, or the LIV Hong Kong in Fanling, Hong Kong.<\/p><p>On the PGA Tour, the players will look to also tune up at the Players at Sawgrass in Florida next week, while the LIV contingent plays at Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore.<\/p><p>There will be a few other events on both circuits – three each – before all the world’s best players head to Augusta.<\/p><p>For Scheffler, it will be a case of attempting to add to the 18 titles he has won since the start of 2022. Thirteen of those have been on the PGA Tour and include the two Masters Green Jackets in 2022 and last season. He missed a bit of the early season, ruled out with a hand injury sustained when he cut himself with a broken wine glass.<\/p><p>Despite this, Scheffler is expected to be in good nick to successfully defend his title at Augusta National, and the rest of the field knows that.<\/p><p>McIlroy, in particular, will launch a determined challenge to wrest the title from Scheffler.<\/p><p>He hasn’t won a major in more than a decade. The last of his four majors came at the 2014 British Open.<\/p><p>The 35-year-old from Hollywood, County Down, in Northern Ireland, has come close on several occasions since, and he has firsthand experience of how devastating Scheffler can be – more so at a venue the top-ranked player has a soft spot for.<\/p><p>A victory for McIlroy would certainly get the monkey off his back. After his last round implosion in 2011, when he led by four strokes at the start of the day, only to shoot an 80 and fall by the wayside, a triumph here would be his only redemption.<\/p><p>A win would hand McIlroy a career Grand Slam of major titles, something many believe is long overdue. He’s also won the PGA Championship in 2011 and 2014, and the US Open in 2011.<\/p><p>There’s been much speculation that McIlroy’s off-course distractions have cost him a handful of majors. Those issues, and there is now a long list of them, would unsettle anybody in any sport.<\/p><p>But there is a growing feeling now he’ll put all that behind him and focus on his game – and his game only – when he’s on the course.<\/p><p>Indeed, he’ll have to do that if he wants to win another major. And then just keeping it on the fairways and greens,” said Jeneath.<\/p><p>“I have had the lead heading into the final round of a tournament before, but it has been a while so to have that is good,” she said.<\/p><p>Jeneath has had the experience playing in Vietnam, as she previously competed in the 2022 SEA Games and won the individual bronze medal.<\/p><p>Maintaining her form in the final round will be crucial for Jeneath as the winner will be invited to compete in three of this year’s Major championships - the AIG Women’s Open, Amundi Evian Championship, and the Chevron Championship.<\/p><p>The winner will also be invited to compete at the Hana Financial Group Championship, ISPS Handa Australian Open, Women’s Amateur Championship, and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.<\/p><p>Meanwhile, compatriot Foong Zi Yu ended the third round in joint 43rd on five-over 218 after she shot a 75, while Pang Hee Jie is in last place in 52nd on ten-over 223 after she shot 12-15, 2026.<\/p><p>This will be the first time New Zealand has hosted the championship that aims to inspire future generations of women golfers and has evolved into the pre-eminent women’s amateur championship in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p><p>Each year, WAAP provides the champion with great opportunities through exemptions into three women’s major championships and elite amateur championships.<\/p><p>The winner will be invited to compete in the AIG Women’s Open, the Chevron Championship and Amundi Evian Championship as well as the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the Hana Financial Group Championship.<\/p><p>R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said: “We are delighted to bring the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific championship to New Zealand for the first time.<\/p><p>“With the height: 349px;\" \/><\/p><p>“Now in their fifth generation, P·790 irons continue to be a global leader in the category.”<\/p><p>The new P·790 irons utilise a new forged face material: 4340M.<\/p><p>“This material is 20% stronger, allowing engineers to design the face thinner and faster than previous models.<\/p><p>“These properties increase the coefficient of restitution, and as a result, golfers experience faster ball speeds and longer carry distances.”<\/p><p>Compared to the previous model of P·790 irons, the use of 4340M material allows golfers to realise up to a 24% larger sweet spot, Bovee added.<\/p><p>“This translates to consistent distance from the top of the set to the bottom.”<\/p><p>A primary goal in the design of P·790 irons was to deliver exceptional feel and sound. With T-modal analysis, each head has been strategically engineered to control the frequencies that ultimately dictate feel and sound at impact.<\/p><p>“Our goal with P·790 irons was to take sound and feel to the next level.<\/p><p>“We were able to accomplish that through individual head optimisation and the stiffening of key internal structures while maintaining the world-class performance P·790 irons are known for,” said Bovee.<\/p><p>These P·790 irons are also some of the most stable TaylorMade has made.<\/p><p>“That’s due to strategic repositioning of up to 40g of tungsten internally, and FLTD centre of gravity (CG) that positions the CG lowest in long irons for easier launch and playability, and progressively higher in the shorter irons for precise spin, distance and trajectory control.<\/p><p>“Tungsten weighting has been moved lower in the long irons, thus lowering the centre of gravity,” said Bovee.<\/p><p>These latest P·790 irons are available in 4-iron through pitching wedge.<\/p><p>The stock steel shafts are the NS Pro NS950 Neo and MODUS3 105 that are available in regular and stiff flex.<\/p><p>The stock graphite shaft is the Mitsubishi Chemical MMT in 75S and 65R. Schauffele was determined to get himself prepared for the start of the 2025 season.<\/p><p>“It was a kind of perfect storm,” he said this week. “I was left on my own and apparently I’m still a toddler.<\/p><p>“I kept training and golfing and training and golfing, and I’m used to having someone either hold my hand or do something as simple as soft tissue. I didn’t get any help, and I think that is sort of what put my back against the wall.”<\/p><p>That included flying to Maui for the season-opening The Sentry, convinced he could work through discomfort even without his team around. Schauffele tied for 30th, then flew to Florida to play in the inaugural TGL match.<\/p><p>That would prove to be the last time we’ve seen Schauffele compete until this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational. He missed the entire West Coast swing, including two events at his favoured Torrey Pines in San Diego, after being diagnosed with an intercostal strain – a small tear in the rib cartilage on his right side.<\/p><p>The downtime was especially difficult when the PGA Tour relocated the Genesis Invitational from Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines out of respect for those impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles.<\/p><p>“I was sitting at home on the West Coast, that sucked for me,” he said. “One of my dreams is to play Torrey South earlier in the year with long rough, cold, South only (winds). And so, to miss Torrey twice really, really sucked. I tried. I tried.<\/p><p>“Nothing’s worse than hitting a wedge out of thick rough and having everything come to a complete stop, you could make it worse. So that was an easy decision for me to make, thinking of long-term goals.”<\/p><p>The long-term goals begin to take shape with Schauffele’s return to this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational. Then comes The Players, followed by next month’s Masters -- one of the two majors he didn’t win in 2024.<\/p><p>Schauffele said he arrived at Bay Hill competition rusty, but with a clean bill of health after a battery of CT scans, ultrasounds and MRIs.<\/p><p>He wanted to have a full clean bill of health after watching fellow stars Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth return from their own recent injuries that involved surgery.<\/p><p>“I feel like I’ve been pretty conservative with everything. That was worth US$1,260,000 (RM5,576,419).<\/p><p>Golf needs them both.<\/p><p>Stars are what fuel interest. The PGA Tour gets a boost from these 72-man signature events with US$20mil (RM88.5mil) purses because they tend to deliver big names and often big moments.<\/p><p>Scottie Scheffler has won four of them over the last two years. Rory McIlroy has won twice.<\/p><p>There also has been some discussion over the last 25 years – dating to the World Golf Championships – that smaller fields make it easier to win no matter how stacked they are. But the signature events have not disappointed.<\/p><p>Campbell, however, was a reminder that anyone can win on any given week. He had never won, not in his short time on the PGA Tour or what seemed like an eternity on the Korn Ferry Tour. That’s one of the great charms about golf and always will be.<\/p><p><img alt=\"Brian Campbell poses with the trophy on the 18th hole after putting in to win during the second playoff hole. \u2014 AFP\" src=\"https:\/\/apicms.thestar.com.my\/uploads\/images\/2025\/03\/03\/3193051.jpg\" onerror=\"this.src='https:\/\/cdn.thestar.com.my\/Themes\/img\/tsol-default-image2023.png'\" style=\"width: 1240px; height: 826px;\" \/><\/p><p>His victory also showed those longshot moments still exist, even as the PGA Tour moves to reduce the number of full cards from 125 to 100 this year, and starts reducing the size of fields next year, including the elimination of some Monday qualifiers.<\/p><p>Yes, the numbers are shrinking, but the opportunity is there.<\/p><p>Meritocracy has not left the building.<\/p><p>Campbell had a career season on the Korn Ferry Tour last year with three runner-up finishes to finish No. 8 on the points list and earn a ticket back to the big leagues.<\/p><p>That gave him access to tournaments like the Mexico Open, where the final hour was no less compelling than when Aberg tracked down Maverick McNealy at Torrey Pines.<\/p><p>An otherwise sleepy week at the Mexico Open – only two players from the top 30, four from the top 50 in the world – produced a duel over the final hour that was fun to watch considering what was at stake.<\/p><p>There was Aldrich Potgieter, full of promise and power, a 20-year-old South African who won the British Amateur at the age of 17 and last year became the youngest Korn Ferry Tour winner. He’s only getting started, and he simply smashes it off the tee.<\/p><p>Potgieter led the field at Vidanta Vallarta by averaging 324.7 yards for all his measured drives, nine of them at 350 yards or longer.<\/p><p>Campbell couldn’t keep up with that – he was on average 39 yards shorter off the tee – and he didn’t try. He spent the weekend alongside Potgieter and never flinched. He played with what he had, and it was enough.<\/p><p>Both felt the nerves of trying to win their first PGA Tour title.<\/p><p>“I thought I was going to throw up at multiple times during the day,” Campbell said.<\/p><p>“Pressure is a big thing. You can’t really beat it, you just have to learn and adjust to it next time you’re in this position,” Potgieter said.<\/p><p>The playoff was as fickle as golf gets. Potgieter twice pounded drives into the fairway on the par-five 18th holes, leaving him only a six-iron to the green. Both times he could only manage par.<\/p><p>Campbell pushed his drive so badly on the second playoff hole that it was sailing out-of-bounds until it crashed into the trees and caromed back into play.<\/p><p>He was on hardpan, 94 yards behind Potgieter. He ripped a three-wood back into position and hit lob wedge 3½ feet from the hole.<\/p><p>Potgieter missed his birdie putt from six feet. Campbell made his for the win, and the shock of it all didn’t wear off for some time, especially after his girlfriend, Kelsi, just about tackled him on the 18th green and he swung her around in pure joy.<\/p><p>“I’m literally freaking out on the inside,” Campbell told NBC when he regained his footing.<\/p><p>“I have no idea what’s going on.”<\/p><p>Here’s what is going on. Campbell is headed to The Players Championship to compete for a US$25mil (RM110.6mil) purse. Then he has the Masters, and the PGA Championship. Along the way, he’ll be in five of the US$20mil signature events left on the PGA Tour schedule.<\/p><p>Everyone expects Aberg or McIlroy or Scheffler or a dozen other stars to win. Not many knew anything about Campbell, who became a PGA Tour footnote as the last person assessed a penalty for slow play for two bad times in 2017 in New Orleans.<\/p><p>(That was a weird one, the first year the Zurich Classic went to two-man teams. Campbell and teammate Miguel Angel Carballo each got a bad time, and because it was foursomes, they counted as one competitor).<\/p><p>Now he’s a PGA Tour winner, a feel-good story, just like Rafael Campos last year when he arrived in Bermuda two hours before his tee time because his wife had just given birth to their first child. In danger of losing his card, he won for the first time.<\/p><p>They don’t move the needle. That doesn’t mean there’s no room for them in this sport.<\/p><p>The PGA Tour hopes to be stronger by rewarding the top performers and by reducing jobs and field sizes. That’s harsh for those who don’t make it, but they have no excuses as long as they have a tee time – whether that’s in signature events, regular events or opposite-field events, or even if they have to go back to the Korn Ferry Tour or Q-school.<\/p><p>No one ever wants to hear the solution is to play better, either because they have heard it for too long or they know it’s true.<\/p><p>A leaner tour – fewer cards, smaller fields – eliminates those who don’t perform.<\/p><p>That was Campbell in 2017 and for the next seven years in the minor leagues.<\/p><p>And now he’s going to the Masters. — AP<\/p>"}]};
