Major. On the first day of classes, I was up early and full of energy, I walked into my biology classes excited to do crazy labs and cut stuff open. By midterms, I knew biology was not for me. I no longer felt excited about my courses and I didn’t have the passion for biology like my classmates did. While in freshwomen orientation I met two social work majors and we talked about our classes and what we wanted to do in our different fields. I became incredibly interested in the social work field. I learned that I could be a medical social worker, school counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist, Clinical social worker and so much more. In the second semester of my freshwoman year, I made the official decision to change my major to social work. I was happy that I was going to work with other students who were just as motivated as I was to bring social change, especially in discrimination. There are many individuals who experience discrimination in sexism, racism, gender identification, sexual orientation, religion, age, class and unfair treatment because they were of human trafficking. My social work courses exposed me to the different levels of social work practice and career options in the field.
My sophomore year, I participated in Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Human Trafficking programs on campus. During my senior, year my single, adoptive mother had passed. A couple of months following her death, I found myself homeless. I had just turned 18 and I was a jobless high school student sleeping from couch to couch. During this time of my life there was one individual who supported me. The high school social worker was a strong support for me. I didn’t have any family support and thus fell on hard times. A college professor once told me that people who choose social work as a major do it because that had someone in their life who influenced them to become a social worker. If that person wasn’t in my life, my personal growth would have differed completely. It was at this point that I realized it only takes one caring individual to hugely impact someone 's life for the better. I want to fight for those that have no voice and create any necessary social change in my community. The field of social work would help me accomplish that. Social work is a broad field where I would be able to work with various populations of people throughout the community ranging from children to the elderly. I believe that by pursuing a master’s degree in social work I will have a sense of deep satisfaction knowing that I will be prepared to face any obstacle in my future as a social worker. I am aware that social work can be challenging but knowing that I will be able to advocate for others that are helpless and fight for social justice will be very rewarding. I first became interested in social work seven years ago, after my aunt and her husband decided to become foster parents, I would help my aunt take care of the children, and they were all very sweet kids that I will never forget. My aunt and her husband were given the opportunity to adopt a 5-year-old girl and shortly after were able to adopt her newborn sister. It was a very joyous day for our family when the adoption was finalized. The first kind, is used more often and is called conventional social work approach, which focuses its attention on undertaking assessment and ensuring that individuals are families are received the correct support through organised services and support. On the other hand, critical social work, the less utilized approach aims to challenge the inequalities and oppression in society, by targeting the societal structure via activism and research, in order to bring forth criticism and questions on discourses attached to particular marginalised groups. The author proposes that both social work practices are important, however, critical social work should be emphasized on more frequently, especially with groups such as the ageing population as it targets the stubborn discourses (Duffy, 2016). Mattsson broadens critical social work, by relating it to critical reflection. Critical theorists have proposed critical reflection as a method to understand how social work practices can uphold oppression due to seemingly everyday actions, words and attitudes. Therefore, this can have an implication on how social workers execute their practice, as ordinary and structural features of bureaucratic hierarchies may senselessly abide social workers to uphold and reproduce social oppression, even though they might be well-intentioned. My interest in social work began with taking a semester off of school during my undergraduate career. I was given the opportunity to live and work in Puerto Rico. This season away from classes allowed me time to search for a career and a major that would best fit my interests, values, and skills. I felt that social work was the only major that adequately reflected this. After returning to school to begin my social work classes, my interest in the field began to develop more fully. The following summer I was able to live and work in Costa Rica with Nicaraguan immigrant teenage girls living in extreme poverty. I began to understand how systems and cycles of poverty can affect the individual. I learned that these girls were not only suffering from monetary poverty, but also of poverty of relationships, lack of education, and cycles of abuse. These different types of poverty allowed little opportunity to overcome such circumstances on their own.

<div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large
