width="207" /></a></div>This fall I taught a lifetime learning class about the history and cinematic legacy of <i>Frankenstein</i>, so of course I've had the iconic tale of gods and monsters on my mind throughout the Halloween season. One of the reasons for the story's enduring success is its adaptability; like Shakespearean plays, <i>Frankenstein</i> can change with the times to reflect an era's particular fears about life, death, science, and what it means to be human. Even from the early days, movie versions of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel have varied wildly from their source material, altering both story and meaning to suit their own aims. Here are 10 of my favorite <i>Frankenstein</i> movies, presented in chronological order, to make a frightful film festival for monster movie fans.<p></p><p><b><a href="https://virtualvirago.blogspot.com/2012/10/classic-films-in-focus-frankenstein-1931.html" target="_blank">1) <i>Frankenstein</i> (1931)</a></b></p><p>The original Universal movie has to start this list because Boris Karloff and Colin Clive create indelible images with their performances as the Creature and his creator (inexplicably renamed Henry Frankenstein). It's wilder, weirder, and a lot more fun all the way through, especially with Ernest Thesiger, Una O'Connor, and Elsa Lanchester joining Karloff and Clive for this outing. If you only see one of the classic Universal entries, this is the one to watch.<br /></p><p><b><a href="https://virtualvirago.blogspot.com/2012/10/classic-films-in-focus-son-of.html" target="_blank">3) <i>Son of Frankenstein</i> (1939)</a></b></p><p>The next generation succumbs to the family's penchant for reanimation in this follow-up, with Karloff returning as the Creature and Basil Rathbone stepping in as Wolf Frankenstein, the son of the original scientist. This one is also notable for its gorgeous German expressionist sets and for Bela Lugosi's appearance as Ygor, the first time that name refers to Dr. Frankenstein's assistant. If you want to introduce kids to classic Universal monsters without scaring them too much, this movie is a great choice. You even get Vincent Price making a cameo "appearance" as the Invisible Man at the very end!<br /></p><p><b><a href="https://virtualvirago.blogspot.com/2012/10/classic-films-in-focus-curse-of.html" target="_blank">5) <i>The Curse of Frankenstein</i> (1957)</a></b></p><p>Hammer started its own series of <i>Frankenstein</i> films with this adaptation, which stars a very creepy looking Christopher Lee as the Creature and Peter Cushing as Dr. Frankenstein. Scream queen Hazel Court also appears as Elizabeth, and the whole thing is rendered gorier because it's in color. Although Cushing's character is condemned to execution in the first movie, he survives to wreak more havoc with his experiments in <i>The Revenge of Frankenstein</i> (1958), <i>The Evil of Frankenstein</i> (1964), <i>Frankenstein Created Woman</i> (1967), <i>Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed</i> (1969), and <i>Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell</i> (1974).<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-HDDwfnQ7mh-O5K8xMfH9UrzXpeyni5I33MA6Fn4U6NesJbnushyphenhyphenUIykMeO_V4OMLxgeBetpU7O5jy0iOaT0ybjGHUux1YsL2kBB6HcSd5j6Nz4SpWTqq4M5cgF6bkvJ_BkQycjsJ_D1us3ahu-0-UasutzmmnqmUn3CENmtUClSZxlLVKeWlO46dLrA/s336/Young%20Frankenstein.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="336" data-original-width="220" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-HDDwfnQ7mh-O5K8xMfH9UrzXpeyni5I33MA6Fn4U6NesJbnushyphenhyphenUIykMeO_V4OMLxgeBetpU7O5jy0iOaT0ybjGHUux1YsL2kBB6HcSd5j6Nz4SpWTqq4M5cgF6bkvJ_BkQycjsJ_D1us3ahu-0-UasutzmmnqmUn3CENmtUClSZxlLVKeWlO46dLrA/s320/Young%20Frankenstein.jpg" width="210" /></a></div><b><a href="https://virtualvirago.blogspot.com/2012/10/classic-films-in-focus-young.html" target="_blank">6) <i>Young Frankenstein</i> (1974)</a></b><p></p><p>No list of <i>Frankenstein</i> movies would be complete without this comedy gem from Mel Brooks, with Gene Wilder starring as Frederick Frankenstein, the unwilling heir to his family's legacy who nonetheless ends up building a Creature of his own. The movie uses sets from the original Universal films and is stuffed with gags that work best if you've seen both the 1931 movie and the 1935 sequel. Often hailed as one of the best comedies of all time, it's still uproariously funny 50 years later. <br /></p><p><b>7) <i>Frankenweenie</i> (1984)</b></p><p>Tim Burton has a long-standing love affair with the <i>Frankenstein</i> story, as evidenced by <i>Edward Scissorhands</i> (1990) and the 2012 stop motion remake of this 1984 live action short, but I like the short for its brevity and concentrated weirdness. Disney originally considered this version too scary for kids and fired Burton because of it, but Burton's later success caused Disney to reconsider the short's appeal. Kids today are unlikely to be phased by anything in <i>Frankenweenie</i>, especially those who have already seen any of Burton's other, later films.<br /></p><p><b>8) <i>The Bride</i> (1985)</b></p><p>Fair warning that I haven't rewatched <i>The Bride</i> in a long time, but it makes the list for nostalgia's sake because I first saw it in the 80s and loved it then, partly for its focus on a female Creature (played by Jennifer Beals) and partly for its casting of rock god Sting as Dr. Frankenstein. The movie also stars Clancy Brown as the male Creature and Cary Elwes as another man with a romantic interest in the heroine. Frankenstein's Creature, played by Tom Noonan, is supposed to be helping the vampire but turns out to be an ally to the kids, and his friendship with a little girl (Ashley Bank) makes a sweet counterpoint to the tragic scene with a different girl in the 1931 film. This one might actually be too scary (and too free-wheeling with its profanity and sexual references) for very young kids, but it's a perfect pick for tweens, teens, and adult monster kids.<br /></p><p><b>10) <i>Gods and Monsters</i> (1998)</b></p><p>Although it isn't technically a horror movie or an adaptation of Shelley's novel, this fictionalized account of the last days of James Whale is an insightful look at the director's life and work, and it seems fitting to end this list here. Ian McKellen gives a brilliant and moving performance as the aging Whale, and the picture includes flashbacks to the making of Whale's most memorable films. This year I've read two particularly good science fiction novels that look to classic literary/movie detectives for inspiration, and I want to get the word out to other cinephiles who also enjoy science fiction and fantasy.<p></p><p>First up is Mary Robinette Kowal's 2022 book, <i>The Spare Man</i>, which takes heaps of inspiration from Nick and Nora Charles, the protagonists of Dashiell Hammett's 1934 novel, <i>The Thin Man</i>. Film fans know the hard-partying Nick and Nora from the series of films starring William Powell and Myrna Loy, starting with <i>The Thin Man </i>(1934) and ending with <i>Song of the Thin Man</i> (1947). Although Kowal's novel is set on a luxury space liner with many creative updates and changes to the original characters, it still rewards readers who come to it with a deep appreciation for the originals. I especially like the way Kowal revises the Charles' dog, Asta, to create the adorable service Westie, Gimlet. The most famous adaptation of the original novel is, of course, the 1941 version starring Humphrey Bogart, although it was actually the third time the story was adapted for film. Harkaway's protagonist, Cal Sounder, has a very Spade way of operating, including his world-weariness and his tendency to find trouble, but the character of Doublewide really evokes Sydney Greenstreet's performance as Kasper Gutman, aka "the fat man." In <i>Titanium Noir</i>, wealthy people gain immortality thanks to a drug that makes them young again but also causes them to grow into giant superhumans, which plays perfectly into noir's distrust of the powerful upper classes. Fans of tech noir films like <i>Blade Runner</i> (1982) and <i>Dark City</i> (1998) already know what to expect from a story like <i>Titanium Noir</i>, but Hammett readers will find this territory familiar, too.<p></p><p>While I'm recommending SFF books for classic movie fans, I have to add a mention for the 2022 dark fantasy, <i>Siren Queen</i>, written by Nghi Vo. The novel imagines 1930s Hollywood as a dangerous, magical place where aspiring stars make deals sealed in blood. With its Asian, lesbian protagonist, <i>Siren Queen</i> tackles many of the historical sins of the era, but it also treats stardom as a supernatural transformation that gives the stars eternal life. While the characters incorporate bits of personality and history from actual stars from the 1930s, Vo is more interested in recreating the atmosphere than any specific individuals. It does help, however, to know something about classic movie actress Anna May Wong.</p><p>Finally, if you haven't already, check out the 2024 television series, <i>Monsieur Spade</i>, which serves as a sequel to <i>The Maltese Falcon</i>. Clive Owen gives a terrific performance as an older and even wearier Spade, now living in France and looking after the daughter of the late Brigid O'Shaughnessy. Adapted from the novel by Graham Greene, <i>Brighton Rock</i> is the best of that trio, with an electric performance by a very young Richard Attenborough as the criminal psychopath. Fans of more recent whodunnits like <i>Glass Onion</i> (2022) will find a lot to love in <i>The Last of Sheila</i>, a very Hollywood story about a group of frenemies brought together for a fateful reunion on the personal yacht of movie producer Clinton Greene (James Coburn). While its abrupt ending leaves something to be desired, <i>Dangerous Crossing</i> still offers an engaging take on the gaslit woman narrative, with Jeanne Crain starring as a distressed newlywed and Michael Rennie as the ship's doctor who tries to help her. <p></p><p>I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the films in the collection later this month. <i>Purple Noon</i> (1960) and <i>La Piscine</i> (1969) both star French icon Alain Delon. The remaining entries are <i>Desert Fury</i> (1947), <i>Kansas City Confidential</i> (1952), <i>Inferno</i> (1953), and <i>Female on the Beach</i> (1955), all of which sound worthwhile from their casts and descriptions. I hope even the most obscure of them will be better than the 1978 adaptation of <i>The Big Sleep</i> that I watched last week; Robert Mitchum and Jimmy Stewart couldn't help that movie hold a candle to the 1946 version.</p><p>Additional collections for August include films about photographers, showcases for Paul Thomas Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and a collection of Preston Sturges pictures, among others.</p><p> What classic movies are you watching this month? It's too hot to be outside, so why not celebrate with some classic movies set in our nation's capital? If you haven't been feeling especially optimistic about our country's politicians lately, these films might provide some relief from the debacle of modern politics, although it's important to remember that the Hays Code helped to tint those rose-colored spectacles an even softer shade. Nonetheless, here are some classic movies that memorably depict the ideals of the American experiment if not its reality.<p></p><p> </p><p><b>MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (1939)</b> - Frank Capra's tale of a young Senator's political education is quintessential Capra "corn" with James Stewart and Claude Rains delivering outstanding performances, especially Stewart in the famous filibuster scene. Although some in the US took offense at the depiction of Washington insiders, the film was banned in other countries precisely because of its pro-democracy stance. Capra, Stewart, Rains, and costar Harry Carey all picked up Oscar nominations for their work, and the movie earned six additional nominations, but it only won the Academy Award for Lewis R. Foster's writing for Best Original Story. The stellar cast also includes Jean Arthur, Guy Kibbee, Thomas Mitchell, Beulah Bondi, and H.B. George Stevens directs the stars through some hilarious situations, with sizzling fireworks going off between Arthur and McCrea, but Coburn proves the scene-stealer of the lot in a performance that earned him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The picture garnered five additional nominations, including nods for Stevens and Arthur. It's an absolute delight from start to finish, and fans of modern rom coms will find a lot to love in this underrated classic.<p></p><p> </p><p><b>BORN YESTERDAY (1950)</b> - George Cukor directs the brilliant Judy Holliday in her Oscar-winning performance as Billie Dawn, a former chorus girl whose domineering and crooked boyfriend (Broderick Crawford) wants her to become more respectably well-educated now that his business has him hobnobbing with Washington politicians. William Holden plays the political writer hired to tutor Billie, and the two inevitably fall in love while touring the sights of the nation's capital. Marilyn is one of relatively few classic movie characters featured at the theme park, and she didn't have much of a line when we saw her out greeting guests. Of course I complimented her dress from <i>The Seven Year Itch</i> (1955). Ebert doesn't find the story's heroine very compelling or believable, but it's noteworthy that all of the other child characters and performers he mentions in comparison are boys: Oliver Twist in <i>Oliver!</i> (1968), Henry Thomas in <i>E.T.</i> (1982), and Ricky Shroder in general. I recently rewatched <i>Annie</i>, and I have a very different perspective on the picture from the late, great reviewer, having actually been a ten year old girl (the same age as Annie herself) when I first saw the movie in theaters in 1982. While certain elements have aged poorly or lack the same appeal they had when I was a child, I can still see why my younger sister and I were so thoroughly charmed by the spunky heroine and her fellow orphans that we belted out "Tomorrow" incessantly and even got dolls of some of the characters. Yes, we were kids who liked <i>Annie</i>, and although we enjoyed the music and the adult characters very much, what really appealed to us was the depiction of girlhood as we experienced it, a rough and dirty childhood full of fights, conflict, and unbrushed hair.<p></p><p>Our culture as a whole has long imagined girls as more or less the opposite of boys. Girls are dear little things who play with dolls while waiting to grow up into loving wives and mothers. Even when they're protagonists and not merely supporting characters, most of them have to be pretty, kind, and generally well-behaved as models of permissible girl behavior. Shirley Temple, the quintessential "little girl" of Hollywood, wins everyone over with her dimpled sweetness, and even Alice and Dorothy are depicted as very "proper" girls in most of their film and TV adaptations (when their girlhood is not erased entirely by making them teenagers or even adults). There are exceptions, of course, like the <i>Little House on the Prairie</i> books and TV series, but celebrated girl-centered stories are harder to come by than stories about boys, and stories about groups of young girls (not marriageable young women) are even rarer.</p><p><i>Annie</i> dispenses with all of those well-worn stereotypes about who and what girls are, replacing the usual sugar and spice with Depression era spunk. It's both a girl's version of <i>Oliver Twist</i> and a prepubescent take on <i>Gold Diggers of 1933 </i>(1933), with a scrappy crew of orphan girls trying to survive by their wits, camaraderie, and sheer stubbornness. Imagine the delight my little sister and I experienced seeing these dirty, grumpy, combative girls playing tricks on Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett) and fighting amongst themselves just like we often did, much to our mother's dismay. We were girls who played outside, got dirty, tore our clothes, and only brushed our hair under duress. Annie and her friends provided a rare chance to see girls who looked and acted like us on the big screen, and we loved them for it. It helped that they weren't preternaturally cute or beautiful, like so many of the little and big girls Hollywood showcases. Mop wig aside, Aileen Quinn's Annie seemed like a kid we'd like to know, even if we felt disappointed that she had to be rescued by adults in the final act. We were hoping she'd kick Tim Curry's Rooster right off the top of the train bridge and send him screaming to his death, but at least she tore up the ill-gotten check and made her initial escape all by herself, while her friends persevered in their race to uncover the villains' deception.</p><p>In the decades since <i>Annie</i>, Hollywood movies have made some progress in telling stories about girls, especially in films like <i>Matilda </i>(1996), but Japan's Hiyao Miyazaki has done far better with <i>My Neighbor Totoro</i> (1988), <i>Kiki's Delivery Service</i> (1989), <i>Spirited Away</i> (2001), and <i>Howl's Moving Castle </i>(2004), just to name a few of the Studio Ghibli movies to center the experiences of young girls as interesting and not idealized characters. Women film reviewers, however, are still well aware of the dearth of great movies about young girls, as Anya Jaremko-Greenwold opines in the 2016 <i>Atlantic</i> essay, "<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2016/06/why-its-so-hard-to-make-great-films-forand-aboutgirls/486269/" target="_blank">Why Hollywood Doesn't Tell More Stories for - and About - Girls</a>." Given that Hollywood still doesn't make many movies like <i>Annie</i>, I'm glad that today's little girls can see the 1982 version in spite of its dated elements.
