the establishment of the Research Council can (now) be found in <a href="http://codex.vlaanderen.be/Portals/Codex/documenten/1018085.html">art. 63/2 Decree of April 30, 2009 concerning the organisation and funding of the science and innovation policy</a>.</li> <li>The Research Council gives the university board advice on the use of funds from the BOF (also see <a href="http://codex.vlaanderen.be/Portals/Codex/documenten/1022807.html">Decision of the Flemish Government of December 21, 2012 on the financing of the Special Research Funds at the universities in the Flemish Community</a> and amended by the <a href="https://www.etaamb.be/nl/besluit-van-de-vlaamse-regering-van-03-mei-2019_n2019041573.html">Flemish government on 3rd May, 2019</a>).</li> <li>The current version of the rules of procedure, also called "internal regulations", was approved by the <a href="https://admin.kuleuven.be/raden/en/academic-council">Academic Council</a> on 30<sup>th</sup> june 2020.</li> <li>Members of the Research Council are appointed for a four year term, and later become ‘additional members’. Members of the Research Council Board are appointed for a two year term.</li> <li>The academic authorities use the following principles for the appointment of members of the Research Council: <ol> <li><em>Achievement</em>. Members should be experienced researchers, preferably with a proven track record. Nominees who are not yet established researchers (see principle 4) should show strong research potential.</li> <li><em>Expertise</em>. To accomplish its objectives, the Research Council’s members should represent a wide range of research expertise. Expertise is important and not a member’s department/faculty.</li> <li><em>Range of interests</em>. Members should have broad interests and some expertise outside their own field to enable them to read and assess applications from other disciplines.</li> <li><em>Diversity</em>. Diversity is important to avoid a narrow view of research, to include various groups of researchers, and to enable researchers (Senior Academic Staff) from various groups to gain experience of the work of the Research Council and, to some extent, of research policy.</li> </ol> </li> <li>On the recommendation of the <a href="https://admin.kuleuven.be/raden/en/executive-board">Executive Board</a>, the Academic Council decides on the composition of the Research Council, on the Chair and the Research Council Board. Since they are involved in a later stage, the vice rectors of the three science Groups do not participate in the discussion of the BOFZAP Advisory Committee, with the exception of the pre-selections. The Research Council's main role is to oversee the assessment process.</p> <p>Specifically, members of the Research Council assess funding applications and advise for funding, appoint external referees, interview applicants and review the reports of ongoing and completed projects.</p> <p>Members advise the Board of Governors on new procedures or adaptations of the regulations of the Special Research Fund, as well as on the broader field of scientific research.<br /> <br /> The Executive Body of the Research Council Board thoroughly prepares all meetings of the Research Council. Board members also assist the Chair in conducting feedback sessions, interviews with applicants, and preselections.</p> <p>The Executive Body of the Research Council prepares the evaluation of all dossiers and the Executive Body members are also given tasks that are not requested of the General Body.</p> <p>The duties and authorities of the Research Council are described in the <a href="https://admin.kuleuven.be/raden/en/intranet/researchcouncil_internal_regulations.pdf">Internal Regulations of the Research Council</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="col-xs-12 col-md-6"> <div class="kul-card-color card card-gray"> <div class="card-body"> <h2><a id="aVERGADER" name="aVERGADER"></a>Meeting frequency and calendar</h2> <p>Each trimester the several items or actions are put on the agenda of the Research Council.</p> <p>The meetings take place in Huis Bethlehem, Schapenstraat 34, 3000 Leuven. </p> <p>The dates of meetings are adjusted every year.
