The concept of a "band" is seen in various contexts throughout the Bible, primarily in the Old and New Testaments, where it is used to describe military units, groups of men, or even symbolic representations of unity and strength.

Old Testament Usage

In the Old Testament, the term "band" is often associated with military forces. For example, in 1 Samuel 10:5, Saul is told by the prophet Samuel that he will meet a "band of prophets" coming down from the high place with musical instruments, indicating a group of men united in prophetic ministry. The Hebrew word often translated as "band" in these contexts is "chebel," which can also mean a company or group.

The concept of a band is also seen in the context of raiding parties or smaller military units. In 2 Kings 5:2, the Bible mentions "bands of Arameans" who had gone out and taken captive a young girl from Israel. These bands were likely small, organized groups of soldiers conducting raids.

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, the term "band" is frequently used to describe Roman military units. For instance, in John 18:3, Judas Iscariot leads a "band of soldiers" along with officers from the chief priests and Pharisees to arrest Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Greek word used here is "speira," which refers to a cohort, a Roman military unit that could consist of several hundred soldiers.

Acts 10:1 introduces us to Cornelius, a centurion of the "Italian band," indicating a specific cohort of Roman soldiers stationed in Caesarea. This highlights the presence and organization of Roman military forces in Judea during the time of the early church.

Symbolic and Figurative Use

Beyond its literal military connotations, the term "band" can also be used symbolically in the Bible. In Colossians 3:14, the Apostle Paul writes, "And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity." Here, the concept of a "bond" or "band" is used metaphorically to describe the unifying power of love among believers, binding them together in perfect harmony.

Similarly, in Ephesians 4:3, Paul urges believers to "make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." The "bond" or "band" of peace is a figurative expression emphasizing the importance of maintaining unity and harmony within the body of Christ.

Conclusion

The term "band" in the Bible encompasses both literal and figurative meanings, ranging from organized military units to symbolic representations of unity and strength. Whether describing a group of soldiers or the spiritual bond among believers, the concept of a band underscores the importance of organization, purpose, and unity in fulfilling God's plans and purposes.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Band
The "band of Roman soldiers" referred to in (Matthew 27:27) and elsewhere was the tenth part of a legion. Rees

(3) The Augustan Band (speira Sebaste) to which Julius, the Roman centurion who had charge of Paul as a prisoner on his voyage to Rome, belonged, was a cohort apparently stationed at Caesarea at the time (Acts 27:1). Schurer (GJV, I3, 461) is of opinion that it was one of five cohorts mentioned by Josephus, recruited in Samaria and called Sebastenes from the Greek name of the city of Samaria (Sebaste). This particular cohort had in all likelihood for its full name Cohors Augusta Sebastenorum, Augusta being an honorific title of which examples are found in the case of auxiliary troops. Sir William Ramsay, following Mommsen (Paul the Traveler, 315, 348), thinks it denotes a body of legionary centurions, selected from legions serving abroad, who were employed by the emperor on confidential business between the provinces and Rome, the title Augustan being conferred upon them as a mark of favor and distinction. The grounds on which the views of Mommsen and Ramsay rest are questioned by Professor Zahn (Introduction to the New Testament, I, 551), and more evidence is needed to establish them.

See ARMY (ROMAN).

(4) The Italian Band (speira Italike) was a cohort composed of volunteer Roman citizens born in Italy and stationed at Caesarea at this time (Acts 10:1). Schurer maintains that there could have been no Roman cohort there at this time, although he accepts the testimony of inscriptions to the presence of an Italian cohort at a later time. He accordingly rejects the story of Cornelius, holding that the author of the Acts has given in this narrative conditions belonging to a later time (GJV, I3, 462). In reply to Schurer, Blass asks why one of the five cohorts mentioned by Josephus may not have been composed of Roman citizens living at Caesarea or Sebaste, and bearing this name (Blass, Acta Apostolorum, 124). From a recently discovered inscription, Sir W. M. Ramsay has ascertained that there was an Italian cohort stationed in Syria in 69 A.D., which heightens the probability of one actually being found in Caesarea at 41-44 A.D., and he shows that even if his cohort was at the time on duty elsewhere a centurion like Cornelius might well have been at Caesarea at the time mentioned (Expositor, 5th series, IV, V, with Schurer's rejoinder). The subject of detached service in the provinces of the Roman Empire is admittedly obscure, but nothing emerges in this discussion to cast doubt upon the historical character of Luke's narrative.

See ARMY (ROMAN).

T.
