style="text-align: left; unicode-bidi: bidi-override; direction: ltr"> <blockquote> <p>BAGHDAD, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) — "Yes, the September 11 attacks in the United States were tragedy, but we (Iraqis) are the people who pay the bill of such tragedy," Mahir Abbas, 53, a journalist in the Iraqi capital Baghdad told Xinhua.</p> <p>"Hundreds of thousands of my people were killed either by the military operations that turned my country’s cities into war zones, or by the various militant groups that fought the Americans as well as each other in the once safe neighborhoods," Abbas said, referring to his once volatile and mainly Sunni neighborhood of Ameriyah in western Baghdad.</p> </blockquote></div> <p> <span id="more-13674"></span> <div style="text-align: left; unicode-bidi: bidi-override; direction: ltr"> <blockquote> <p>According to Iraqi government data, over 100,000 civilians have been killed in Iraq after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, while unofficial figures put the death toll at over one million by both military actions and sectarian strife.</p> <p>The war also left some five million orphans and more than one million widows, in addition to some four million displaced people inside and outside Iraq. Such numbers are atrocious for a country with a total population of about 30 million.</p> <p>The tragedy of 9/11 and the following invasion of Iraq have made a substantial change in Iraqis’ lives. Many of the people of Iraq repeatedly express their suffering from the feeling of losing security and stability of their lives.</p> <p>"It wasn’t easy for me to see my kids growing in an atmosphere of chaos and insecurity. They were deprived of experiencing entertainment and health care like their peers in many other countries," Um Mohammed, a female primary school teacher in her thirties, told Xinhua.</p> <p>Years of chaos, insurgency and sectarian strife have made negative impacts on the Iraqi health care system, which once was one of the most advanced systems in the Middle East.</p> <p>In the aftermath of the invasion, most public hospitals in Baghdad have allegedly turned to be traps of militiamen who frequently kidnapped and killed patients from the other sect. Such gruesome crimes were part of the daily reprisal killings between Shi’ite and Sunni communities, which peaked in the years of 2006 and 2007.</p> <p>"It wasn’t safe to take my eight-year-old kid for a surgery to any of Baghdad hospitals at that time because of militia," Um Mohammed said.</p> <p>She was forced to travel for some 400 km with her kid to Iraq’s northern city of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish autonomous region, in spite of the dangerous roads which frequently witness checkpoints by militia and battles between insurgents and U.S. troops.</p> <p>"Our vehicle was captured on the road twice, once by Shi’ite militia on the main road near the city of Balad, some 80 km north of Baghdad, but they just let us go because we were a family of a woman and three kids and there were a lot of cars. They just let us go," she said.</p> <p>"Again in the second trip we were also stopped by a group of al- Qaida (Sunni extremists) near Samarra and they asked us from where we had come and they let us go when they knew that we are from Khadraa in western Baghdad, a Sunni area," she added.</p> <p>The surgery was scheduled to be carried out in their third trip to Erbil, but she did not dare to go again and was lucky to find a physician in Baghdad who used to work in a private hospital.</p> <p>Now Um Mohammed’s daughter and two sons are no more kids, but she still find it hard to allow them to go to many places in Baghdad without the company of parents or someone she trust.</p> <p>"It is not totally safe to let him (the elder son) go alone. But I wonder, he is now 16 years old, how long we will continue to control him? I really do not have the answer," she said.</p> <p>However, recalling the misery of Iraqis’ lives under Saddam Hussein’s rule before the 9/11 attacks, many people like Hameed al- Jaberi, a lawyer in his fifties, would describe their situation as weak prisoners under cruel regime suffering from the consequences his wars with Iran and Kuwait and years of severe UN sanctions.</p> <p>"Saddam’s regime used to tell Iraqis how to think, what to read, what to watch, what to listen to, what to say and what work they could do," Jaberi said.</p> <p>The nation under Saddam only had five newspapers, which were all owned by the government. The use of mobile phones and satellite dishes were forbidden and anyone who breaks the rule would be punished or even jailed.</p> <p>"If people want to go for shopping, they would only find almost the same goods in all markets, because only few people who were close to the inner circle of Saddam’s family were allowed to import goods for the country’s markets," Jaberi said.</p> <p>On the other hand, however, he said Saddam’s government was giving "enough security for the society and enough protection for their homeland."</p> <p>"People generally did not need money to get fuel, staple food, electricity, health care, transportation and other basic needs," he said when comparing between the Iraqis’ lives during Saddam’s rule and in the aftermath of 9/11.</p> <p>"All in all, people used to live in peace, security, pride and dignity, although they were choked by the regime which brought scourges of wars and severe sanctions by irresponsible fatal mistakes, such as the avoidable war with Iran and invasion of Kuwait," Jaberi added.</p> <p>Just four months after 9/11, then U.S. President George W. Bush identified Iraq, Iran and North Korea as the "axis of evil" countries and declared that beating these regimes was the United States’ most urgent national security task.</p> <p>"Actually, the Americans built their strategy against Iraq on two major allegations. Firstly, the war on Saddam Hussein was a reaction to the 9/11 attacks, as Saddam has relations with Qaida. Secondly, Saddam was developing sophisticated and awesome weapons of mass destruction," Sabah al-Sheikh, a professor on politics in Baghdad University, told Xinhua.</p> <p>However, 10 years after the 9/11 attacks, there was no tangible evidence being found that Iraq has any kind of ties with Qaida or possesses any weapon of mass destruction.</p> <p>"After 10 years, Iraqis are the ones who have been burdened by the consequences of the 9/11 tragedy," Sheikh said.</p> <p>The professor criticized the United States for making a mistake when it depicted the al-Qaida terrorist acts, including the 9/11 attacks, and the battles against them as an "eternal and historical struggle."</p> <p>"They (Americans) refuse to recognize al-Qaida as a temporal and limited phenomenon which has its motives to exist," Sheikh said.</p> <p>"Al-Qaida is the result of imbalance in the relations between the Islamic world and America, as well as the result of lack of peaceful options in dealing with such imbalance," Sheikh added.</p> <p>Sheikh said that the U.S. policy, what he called as "Shoot first, ask questions later", has dragged the people of Muslim countries and the whole world through uncountable bloodletting that would continue for decades until the logic of wisdom and fairness prevails in the end. </p> </blockquote> <p><strong>Source: </strong><a
