Named after the Chinese moon goddess Chang’e (pronounced “chong-uh”), the program’s first two missions orbited the moon to photograph and map its surface. Federal officials recently granted the space agency an exemption, which allowed NASA-funded researchers to apply for access to the near-side sample retrieved by Chang’e-5.
