It is referenced in several passages, highlighting its significance during the period of the Assyrian Empire.

Biblical References:

1. 2 Kings 17:6 : "In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River, and in the towns of the Medes." This verse marks the beginning of the Assyrian captivity of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Gozan is identified as one of the locations where the Israelites were resettled after being taken from their homeland.

2. 2 Kings 18:11 : "The king of Assyria deported Israel to Assyria and settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River, and in the cities of the Medes." This passage reiterates the deportation and resettlement of the Israelites, emphasizing Gozan as a key location in this historical event.

3. 1 Chronicles 5:26 : "So the God of Israel stirred the spirit of Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria), and he took the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile. He brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the Gozan River, where they remain to this day." This verse provides additional context to the exile, mentioning Gozan as a place where specific tribes of Israel were taken.

4. Isaiah 37:12 : "Did the gods of the nations my fathers destroyed rescue them—the gods of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden in Telassar?" In this passage, Gozan is mentioned in a rhetorical question posed by the Assyrian king, highlighting the futility of relying on the gods of conquered nations.

Historical and Geographical Context:

Gozan is believed to be located in the region of Mesopotamia, near the Habor River, which is identified with the modern-day Khabur River in northeastern Syria. This area was part of the Assyrian Empire during the time of the Israelite exile. The strategic location of Gozan along the river made it a suitable place for resettling deported populations, as it provided fertile land and access to water resources.

Significance in Israelite History:

The mention of Gozan in the context of the Assyrian exile underscores the severity of the judgment that fell upon the Northern Kingdom of Israel due to their disobedience and idolatry. The deportation to Gozan and other locations marked a significant turning point in Israelite history, as it led to the dispersion of the ten tribes and the loss of their national identity.

Theological Implications:

From a theological perspective, the exile to Gozan serves as a reminder of God's sovereignty and justice. The relocation of the Israelites to foreign lands was a fulfillment of prophetic warnings given by the prophets, who called the people to repentance. Despite the judgment, the exile also set the stage for future restoration and the eventual return of a remnant to the Promised Land, as foretold by the prophets.

Gozan, therefore, is not only a geographical location but also a symbol of God's dealings with His people, illustrating both His righteous judgment and His enduring faithfulness to His covenant promises.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Gozan
fleece; pasture; who nourisheth the body
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Gozan
seems in the Authorized Version of (1 Chronicles 5:26) to be the name of a river, but in (2 Kings 17:6) and 2Kin 18:11 It is evidently applied not to a river but a country. Gozan was the tract to which the Israelites were carried away captive by Pul, Tiglathpileser and Shalmaneser, or possibly Sargon. It is probably identical with the Gauzanitis of Ptolemy, and I may be regarded as represented by the Mygdonia of other writers.
