When Lot<MH3876> saw<MH7200> <i>them,</i> he stood<MH6965> up<MH6965> to meet<MH7122> them and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> <i>with his</i> face<MH639> to the ground<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, “Now<MH4994> behold<MH2009>, my lords<MH136>, please<MH4994> turn<MH5493> aside<MH5493> into your servant’s<MH5650> house<MH1004>, and spend<MH3885a> the<MH3885a> night<MH3885a>, and wash<MH7364> your feet<MH7272>; then you may rise<MH7925> early<MH7925> and go<MH1980> on your way<MH1870>.” They said<MH559>, “No<MH3808>, but we shall spend<MH3885a> the<MH3885a> night<MH3885a> in the public<MH7339> square<MH7339>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Yet he strongly<MH3966> urged<MH6484> them, so they turned<MH5493> aside<MH5493> to him and entered<MH935> his house<MH1004>; and he prepared<MH6213a> a feast<MH4960> for them and baked<MH644> unleavened<MH4682> bread<MH4682>, and they ate<MH398>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Before<MH2962> they lay<MH7901> down<MH7901>, the men<MH376> of the city<MH5892b>—the men<MH376> of Sodom<MH5467>—surrounded<MH5437> the house<MH1004>, both<MH4480> young<MH5288> and old<MH2205>, all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>from every quarter<MH7097a>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>and they called<MH7121> to Lot<MH3876> and said<MH559> to him, “Where<MH346> are the men<MH376> who<MH834> came<MH935> to you tonight<MH3915>? Bring<MH3318> them out<MH3318> to us that we may <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>have<MH3045> relations<MH3045> with them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But Lot<MH3876> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to them at the doorway<MH6607>, and shut<MH5462> the door<MH1817> behind<MH310> him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and said<MH559>, “Please<MH4994>, my brothers<MH251>, do not act<MH7489a> wickedly<MH7489a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now<MH4994> look<MH2009>, I have two<MH8147> daughters<MH1323> who<MH834> have not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>had<MH3045> relations<MH3045> with <i>any</i> man<MH376>; please<MH4994> let me bring<MH3318> them out<MH3318> to you, and do<MH6213a> to them <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>whatever<MH2896a, 5869> you like<MH2896a, 5869>; only<MH7534b> do not do<MH6213a> anything<MH1697> to these<MH411> men<MH376>, because<MH3588, 5921, 3651> they have come<MH935> under the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>shelter<MH6738> of my roof<MH6982>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But they said<MH559>, “Get<MH5066> out<MH1973> of<MH1973> the<MH1973> way<MH1973>!” They also said<MH559>, “This one<MH259> came<MH935> in<MH935> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>as a foreigner<MH1481a>, and already<MH8199> he is acting<MH8199> like<MH8199> a<MH8199> judge<MH8199>; now<MH6258> we will treat<MH7489a> you worse<MH7489a> than<MH4480> them!” So they pressed<MH6484> hard<MH3966> against <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Lot<MH3876> and moved<MH5066> forward<MH5066> to break<MH7665> the door<MH1817>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But the men<MH376> reached<MH7971> out<MH7971> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>hands<MH3027> and brought<MH935> Lot<MH3876> into the house<MH1004> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>with them, and shut<MH5462> the door<MH1817>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then they struck<MH5221> the men<MH376> who<MH834> were at the doorway<MH6607> of the house<MH1004> with blindness<MH5575>, from<MH4480> the small<MH6996b> to the great<MH1419>, so that they became<MH3811> weary<MH3811> of <i>trying</i> to find<MH4672> the doorway<MH6607>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the <i>two</i> men<MH376> said<MH559> to Lot<MH3876>, “Whom<MH4310> else<MH5750> do you have here<MH6311>? A son-in-law<MH2860a> and your sons<MH1121> and daughters<MH1323>, and whomever<MH3605, 834> you have in the city<MH5892b>, bring<MH3318> <i>them</i> out<MH3318> of the place<MH4725>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>for we are about to destroy<MH7843> this<MH2088> place<MH4725>, because<MH3588> their outcry<MH6818> has become<MH1431> so great<MH1431> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> that the LORD<MH3068> has sent<MH7971> us to destroy<MH7843> it.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So Lot<MH3876> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> and spoke<MH1696> to his sons-in-law<MH2860a>, who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>were to marry<MH3947> his daughters<MH1323>, and said<MH559>, “Up, get<MH3318> out<MH3318> of this<MH2088> place<MH4725>, for the LORD<MH3068> is destroying<MH7843> the city<MH5892b>.” But he appeared<MH1961, 5869> to his sons-in-law<MH2860a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>to be joking<MH6711>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>When<MH3644> morning<MH7837> dawned<MH5927>, the angels<MH4397> urged<MH213> Lot<MH3876>, saying<MH559>, “Up, take<MH3947> your wife<MH802> and your two<MH8147> daughters<MH1323> who are<MH4672> here<MH4672>, or<MH6435> you will be swept<MH5595> away<MH5595> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>punishment<MH5771> of the city<MH5892b>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But he hesitated<MH4102>. So the men<MH376> grasped<MH2388> his hand<MH3027> and the hand<MH3027> of his wife<MH802> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>hands<MH3027> of his two<MH8147> daughters<MH1323>, because the compassion<MH2551> of the LORD<MH3068> <i>was</i> upon him; and they brought<MH3318> him out<MH3318> and put<MH5117> him outside<MH4480, 2351> the city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>When they had brought<MH3318> them outside<MH2351>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>one said<MH559>, “Escape<MH4422> for your life<MH5315>! Do not look<MH5027> behind<MH310> you, and do not stay<MH5975> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>anywhere<MH3605> in the surrounding<MH3603> area<MH3603>; escape<MH4422> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>mountains<MH2022>, or<MH6435> you will be swept<MH5595> away<MH5595>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But Lot<MH3876> said<MH559> to them, “Oh<MH4994> no<MH408>, my lords<MH136>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now<MH4994> behold<MH2009>, your servant<MH5650> has found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in your sight<MH5869>, and you have magnified<MH1431> your compassion<MH2617a>, which<MH834> you have shown<MH6213a> me by saving<MH2421a> my life<MH5315>; but I cannot<MH3201, 3808> escape<MH4422> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>mountains<MH2022>, for the disaster<MH7463a> will overtake<MH1692> me and I will die<MH4191>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>now<MH4994> behold<MH2009>, this<MH2088> town<MH5892b> is near<MH7138> <i>enough</i> to flee<MH5127> to, and it is small<MH4705>. Please<MH4994>, let me escape<MH4422> there<MH8033> (is it not small<MH4705>?) <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>so that my life<MH5315> may be saved<MH2421a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to him, “Behold<MH2009>, I grant<MH5375> you this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>request<MH1697> also<MH1571>, not to overthrow<MH2015> the town<MH5892b> of which<MH834> you have spoken<MH1696>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Hurry<MH4116>, escape<MH4422> there<MH8033>, for I cannot<MH3201, 3808> do<MH6213a> anything<MH1697> until<MH5704> you arrive<MH935> there<MH8033>.” Therefore<MH5921, 3651> the town<MH5892b> was named<MH7121, 8034> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>Zoar<MH6820>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>The sun<MH8121> had risen<MH3318> over<MH5921> the earth<MH776> when Lot<MH3876> came<MH935> to Zoar<MH6820>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> rained<MH4305> brimstone<MH1614> and fire<MH784> on Sodom<MH5467> and Gomorrah<MH6017> from the LORD<MH3068> out of heaven<MH8064>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>and He overthrew<MH2015> those<MH411> cities<MH5892b>, and all<MH3605> the surrounding<MH3603> area<MH3603>, and all<MH3605> the inhabitants<MH3427> of the cities<MH5892b>, and what<MH6780> grew<MH6780> on the ground<MH127>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>Lot’s wife<MH802>, from behind<MH310> him, looked<MH5027> <i>back,</i> and she became<MH1961> a pillar<MH5333> of salt<MH4417>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Now Abraham<MH85> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> <i>and went</i> to the place<MH4725> where<MH834, 8033> he had stood<MH5975> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>and he looked<MH8259> down<MH8259> toward<MH5921, 6440> Sodom<MH5467> and Gomorrah<MH6017>, and toward<MH5921, 6440> all<MH3605> the land<MH776> of the surrounding<MH3603> area<MH3603>; and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>behold<MH2009>, he saw<MH7200> the smoke<MH7008> of the land<MH776> ascended<MH5927> like the smoke<MH7008> of a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>furnace<MH3536>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>So it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when God<MH430> destroyed<MH7843> the cities<MH5892b> of the surrounding<MH3603> area<MH3603>, that God<MH430> remembered<MH2142> Abraham<MH85>, and sent<MH7971> Lot<MH3876> out<MH7971> of the midst<MH8432> of the destruction<MH2018>, when He overthrew<MH2015> the cities<MH5892b> in which<MH834> Lot<MH3876> had lived<MH3427>. <p class="hdg">Lot and His Daughters</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Now Lot<MH3876> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> from Zoar<MH6820> with his two<MH8147> daughters<MH1323> and stayed<MH3427> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>mountains<MH2022>, because<MH3588> he was<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> to stay<MH3427> in Zoar<MH6820>; and he stayed<MH3427> in a cave<MH4631>, he and his two<MH8147> daughters<MH1323>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then the firstborn<MH1067> said<MH559> to the younger<MH6810>, “Our father<MH1> is<MH2204> old<MH2204>, and there<MH369> is<MH369> not<MH369> a man<MH376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>on earth<MH776> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>have<MH935> relations<MH935> with<MH935> us according to the custom<MH1870> of all<MH3605> the earth<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Come<MH1980>, let’s make<MH8248> our father<MH1> drink<MH8248> wine<MH3196>, and let’s sleep<MH7901> with him so that we may keep<MH2421a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>our family<MH2233> alive<MH2421a> through<MH4480> our father<MH1>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>So they made<MH8248> their father<MH1> drink<MH8248> wine<MH3196> that night<MH3915>, and the firstborn<MH1067> went<MH935> in<MH935> and slept<MH7901> with her father<MH1>; and he did not know<MH3045> when she lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> or got<MH6965> up<MH6965>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>On the following<MH4283> day<MH4283>, the firstborn<MH1067> said<MH559> to the younger<MH6810>, “Look<MH2005>, I slept<MH7901> last<MH570> night<MH570> with my father<MH1>; let’s make<MH8248> him drink<MH8248> wine<MH3196> tonight<MH3915> too<MH1571>, then you go<MH935> in<MH935> and sleep<MH7901> with him, so that we may keep<MH2421a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>our family<MH2233> alive<MH2421a> through<MH4480> our father<MH1>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/19-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>So they had<MH8248> their father<MH1> drink<MH8248> wine<MH3196> that night<MH3915> too<MH1571>, and the younger<MH6810> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and slept<MH7901> with him;
