And he went<MH5927> up<MH5927> and besieged<MH6696a, 5921> Samaria<MH8111>, and fought<MH3898a> against it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Then he sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> to the city<MH5892b> to Ahab<MH256>, king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>, and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> Ben-hadad<MH1130> says<MH559>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>&#8216;Your silver<MH3701> and your gold<MH2091> are mine; your most beautiful<MH2896a> wives<MH802> and children<MH1121> are also mine.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478> replied<MH6030a, 559>, &#8220;As <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>you say<MH1697>, my lord<MH113>, O king<MH4428>; I am yours, as well as all<MH3605> that I have.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then the messengers<MH4397> returned<MH7725> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Ben-hadad<MH1130> says<MH559> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>this<MH3541>: &#8216;I did indeed<MH3588> send<MH7971> <i>word</i> to you, saying, &#8220;You shall give<MH5414> me your silver<MH3701>, your gold<MH2091>, your wives<MH802>, and your children<MH1121>&#8221;; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>but about this time<MH6256> tomorrow<MH4279> I will send<MH7971> my servants<MH5650> to you, and they will search<MH2664> your house<MH1004> and the houses<MH1004> of your servants<MH5650>; and they will take<MH7760> in their hands<MH3027> everything<MH3605> that is pleasing<MH4261> to your eyes<MH5869>, and take<MH3947> <i>it all</i> away<MH3947>.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478> summoned<MH7121> all<MH3605> the elders<MH2205> of the land<MH776> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> be<MH3045> aware<MH3045> and see<MH7200> that this<MH2088> man is looking<MH1245> for<MH1245> trouble<MH7463a>; for he sent<MH7971> me <i>his demand</i> for my wives<MH802>, my children<MH1121>, my silver<MH3701>, and my gold<MH2091>, and I did not refuse<MH4513> him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the elders<MH2205> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Do not listen<MH8085> nor<MH3808> consent<MH14>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So he said<MH559> to the messengers<MH4397> of Ben-hadad<MH1130>, &#8220;Tell<MH559> my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, &#8216;Everything<MH3605> that you sent<MH7971> <i>as a demand</i> to your servant<MH5650> at the first<MH7223>, I will do<MH6213a>; but this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> I cannot<MH3201, 3808> do<MH6213a>.&#8217;&#8221; Then the messengers<MH4397> departed<MH1980>, and brought<MH7725> him word<MH1697> again<MH7725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Ben-hadad<MH1130> sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> to him and said<MH559>, &#8220;May the gods<MH430> do<MH6213a> so<MH3541> to me and more<MH3254> so<MH3541>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>if<MH518> the dust<MH6083> of Samaria<MH8111> will be enough<MH8230b> for handfuls<MH8168> for all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>follow<MH7272> me.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478> replied<MH6030a, 559>, &#8220;Tell<MH1696> <i>him,</i> &#8216;He who straps<MH2296> on<MH2296> <i>his weapons</i> had better not boast<MH1984b> like one who takes<MH6605a> <i>them</i> off<MH6605a>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And when <i>Ben-hadad</i> heard<MH8085> this<MH2088> message<MH1697>, while he was drinking<MH8354> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>with the kings<MH4428> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>temporary<MH5521> shelters<MH5521>, he said<MH559> to his servants<MH5650>, &#8220;Take<MH7760> <i>your</i> positions<MH7760>.&#8221; So they took<MH7760> <i>their</i> positions<MH7760> against<MH5921> the city<MH5892b>. <p class="hdg">Ahab Victorious</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now behold<MH2009>, a prophet<MH5030> approached<MH5066> Ahab<MH256> king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>, and said<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: &#8216;Have you seen<MH7200> all<MH3605> this<MH2088> great<MH1419> multitude<MH1995>? Behold<MH2009>, I am going to hand<MH5414, 3027> them over<MH5414> to you today<MH3117>, and you shall know<MH3045> that I am the LORD<MH3068>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But Ahab<MH256> said<MH559>, &#8220;By whom<MH4310>?&#8221; So he said<MH559>, &#8220;The LORD<MH3068> says<MH559> this<MH3541>: &#8216;By the young<MH5288> men<MH5288> of the leaders<MH8269> of the provinces<MH4082>.&#8217;&#8221; Then he said<MH559>, &#8220;Who<MH4310> will begin<MH631> the battle<MH4421>?&#8221; And he said<MH559>, &#8220;You <i>will.</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So he mustered<MH6485> the young<MH5288> men<MH5288> of the leaders<MH8269> of the provinces<MH4082>, and there were 232<MH3967, 8147, 7970>; and after<MH310> them he mustered<MH6485> all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>: seven<MH7651> thousand<MH505>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>They went<MH3318> out<MH3318> at noon<MH6672a>, while Ben-hadad<MH1130> was drinking<MH8354> himself drunk<MH7910> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>temporary<MH5521> shelters<MH5521> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>with the thirty-two<MH7970, 8147> kings<MH4428> who were helping<MH5826> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>The young<MH5288> men<MH5288> of the leaders<MH8269> of the provinces<MH4082> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> first<MH7223>; and Ben-hadad<MH1130> sent<MH7971> out<MH7971> <i>scouts,</i> and they reported<MH5046> to him, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Men<MH376> have come<MH3318> out<MH3318> from Samaria<MH8111>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559>, &#8220;If<MH518> they have come<MH3318> out<MH3318> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>for peace<MH7965>, take<MH8610> them alive<MH2416a>; or if<MH518> they have come<MH3318> out<MH3318> for war<MH4421>, take<MH8610> them alive<MH2416a> <i>as well.&#8221;</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So these<MH428> <i>men</i> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> from the city<MH5892b>, the young<MH5288> men<MH5288> of the leaders<MH8269> of the provinces<MH4082>, and the army<MH2428> which<MH834> followed<MH310> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>killed<MH5221>, each<MH376> one<MH376>, his man<MH376>; and the Arameans<MH758> fled<MH5127> and Israel<MH3478> pursued<MH7291> them, and Ben-hadad<MH1130> the king<MH4428> of Aram<MH758> escaped<MH4422> on a horse<MH5483b> with horsemen<MH6571b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478> also went<MH3318> out<MH3318> and struck<MH5221> the horses<MH5483b> and chariots<MH7393>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>killed<MH5221> the Arameans<MH758> in a great<MH1419> slaughter<MH4347>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then the prophet<MH5030> approached<MH5066> the king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478> and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Go<MH1980>, show<MH2388> yourself courageous<MH2388> and be<MH3045> aware<MH3045> and see<MH7200> what<MH834> you have to do<MH6213a>; for at <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>the turn<MH8666> of the year<MH8141> the king<MH4428> of Aram<MH758> will march<MH5927> against<MH5921> you.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Now the servants<MH5650> of the king<MH4428> of Aram<MH758> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Their gods<MH430> are gods<MH430> of the mountains<MH2022>; for<MH5921> that<MH5921, 3651> reason<MH5921, 3651> they were stronger<MH2388> than<MH4480> we. But let us fight<MH3898a> them in the plain<MH4334>, <i>and</i> we will certainly<MH518, 3808> be stronger<MH2388> than<MH4480> they. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Carry<MH6213a> out<MH6213a> this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>plan<MH1697>: remove<MH5493> the kings<MH4428>, each<MH376> from his place<MH4725>, and put<MH7760> governors<MH6346> in<MH8478> their place<MH8478>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>muster<MH4487> an army<MH2428> like the army<MH2428> that you have lost<MH5307, 4480>, horse<MH5483b> for horse<MH5483b> and chariot<MH7393> for chariot<MH7393>. Then we will fight<MH3898a> against<MH854> them in the plain<MH4334>, <i>and</i> we will certainly<MH518, 3808> be stronger<MH2388> than<MH4480> they.&#8221; And he listened<MH8085> to their voice<MH6963> and did<MH6213a> so<MH3651>. <p class="hdg">Another Aramean War</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>So at <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>the turn<MH8666> of the year<MH8141> Ben-hadad<MH1130> mustered<MH6485> the Arameans<MH758> and went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Aphek<MH663> to fight<MH4421> against<MH5973> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> were mustered<MH6485> and given<MH3557> provisions<MH3557>, and they went<MH1980> to meet<MH7122> them; and the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> camped<MH2583> opposite<MH5048> them like two<MH8147> little<MH2835> flocks<MH2835> of goats<MH5795>, while the Arameans<MH758> filled<MH4390> the country<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then a man<MH376> of God<MH430> approached<MH5066> and spoke<MH559> to the king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>, and said<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: &#8216;Since<MH3282, 834> the Arameans<MH758> have said<MH559>, &#8220;The LORD<MH3068> is a god<MH430> of mountains<MH2022>, but He is not a god<MH430> of valleys<MH6010>,&#8221; therefore I will hand<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to you all<MH3605> this<MH2088> great<MH1419> multitude<MH1995>, and you shall know<MH3045> that I am the LORD<MH3068>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>So they camped<MH2583>, one<MH428> opposite<MH5227> the other<MH428>, for seven<MH7651> days<MH3117>. And on the seventh<MH7637> day<MH3117> the battle<MH4421> was joined<MH7126>, and the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>killed<MH5221> <i>of</i> the Arameans<MH758> a hundred<MH3967> thousand<MH505> foot<MH7273> soldiers<MH7273> in a single<MH259> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But the rest<MH3498> fled<MH5127> to Aphek<MH663> into the city<MH5892b>, and the wall<MH2346> fell<MH5307> on twenty-seven<MH6242, 7651> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> who were left<MH3498>. And Ben-hadad<MH1130> fled<MH5127> and came<MH935> into the city<MH5892b>, <i>going from one</i> inner<MH2315> room<MH2315> to another<MH2315>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>But his servants<MH5650> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Behold<MH2009> now<MH4994>, we have heard<MH8085> that the kings<MH4428> of the house<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478> are merciful<MH2617a> kings<MH4428>. Please<MH4994> let&#8217;s put<MH7760> sackcloth<MH8242> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>around our waists<MH4975> and ropes<MH2256a> on our heads<MH7218>, and go<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>; perhaps<MH194> he will let<MH2421a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>you live<MH2421a>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>So they put<MH2296> sackcloth<MH8242> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>around their waists<MH4975> and ropes<MH2256a> on their heads<MH7218>, and came<MH935> to the king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Your servant<MH5650> Ben-hadad<MH1130> says<MH559>, &#8216;Please<MH4994> let <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>me live<MH2421a>.&#8217;&#8221; And <i>Ahab</i> said<MH559>, &#8220;Is he still<MH5750> alive<MH2416a>? He is my brother<MH251>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Now the men<MH376> took<MH5172> this as<MH5172> a<MH5172> <i>good</i> omen<MH5172>, and quickly<MH4116> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>accepting<MH2480> it from him, they said<MH559>, &#8220;Your brother<MH251> Ben-hadad<MH1130>.&#8221; Then he said<MH559>, &#8220;Go<MH935>, bring<MH3947> him.&#8221; Then Ben-hadad<MH1130> came<MH3318> out<MH3318> to him, and he had him mount<MH5927> the chariot<MH4818>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And <i>Ben-hadad</i> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;The cities<MH5892b> which<MH834> my father<MH1> took<MH3947> from your father<MH1> I will restore<MH7725>, and you can make<MH7760> streets<MH2351> for yourself in Damascus<MH1834>, as my father<MH1> made<MH7760> in Samaria<MH8111>.&#8221; <i>Ahab said,</i> &#8220;And I will let<MH7971> you go<MH7971> with this covenant<MH1285>.&#8221; So he made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with him and let<MH7971> him go<MH7971>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Now a man<MH376> from the sons<MH1121> of the prophets<MH5030> said<MH559> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>another<MH7453> by the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> strike<MH5221> me.&#8221; But the man<MH376> refused<MH3985> to strike<MH5221> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Because<MH3282, 834> you have not listened<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068>, behold<MH2009>, as soon as you leave<MH1980> me, a lion<MH743b> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>kill<MH5221> you.&#8221; And <i>as soon as</i> he left<MH1980> him a lion<MH743b> found<MH4672> him and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>killed<MH5221> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Then he found<MH4672> another<MH312> man<MH376> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> strike<MH5221> me.&#8221; And the man<MH376> struck<MH5221> him, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>injuring<MH6481, 5221> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>So the prophet<MH5030> departed<MH1980> and waited<MH5975> for the king<MH4428> by the road<MH1870>, and disguised<MH2664> himself with a bandage<MH666> over<MH5921> his eyes<MH5869>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And as the king<MH4428> passed<MH5674a> by<MH5674a>, he cried<MH6817> out<MH6817> to the king<MH4428> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Your servant<MH5650> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> into the midst<MH7130> of the battle<MH4421>; and behold<MH2009>, a man<MH376> turned<MH5493> aside<MH5493> and brought<MH935> a man<MH376> to me and said<MH559>, &#8216;Guard<MH8104> this<MH2088> man<MH376>; if<MH518> for<MH6485> any<MH6485> reason<MH6485> he goes<MH6485> missing<MH6485>, then your life<MH5315> shall be <i>forfeited</i> in<MH8478> place<MH8478> of<MH8478> his life<MH5315>, or<MH176> else you shall pay<MH8254> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>talent<MH3603> of silver<MH3701>.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/20-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Now while your servant<MH5650> was busy<MH6213a> here<MH2008> and there<MH2008>, he disappeared<MH369>.&#8221; And the king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;So<MH3651> shall your judgment<MH4941> be;
