I do not know<MH3045> where<MH575> the men<MH376> went<MH1980>. Pursue<MH7291> them quickly<MH4118b>, for you will overtake<MH5381> them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But she had brought<MH5927> them up<MH5927> to the roof<MH1406> and hidden<MH2934> them in the stalks<MH6086> of flax<MH6593> which she had laid<MH6186a> in<MH6186a> order<MH6186a> on the roof<MH1406>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So the men<MH376> pursued<MH7291> them on the road<MH1870> to the Jordan<MH3383>, to the crossing<MH4569b> places<MH4569b>; and as<MH3512c> soon<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> those who were pursuing<MH7291> them had gone<MH3318> out<MH3318>, they shut<MH5462> the gate<MH8179>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now before<MH2962> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>the spies lay<MH7901> down<MH7901>, she came<MH5927> up<MH5927> to them on the roof<MH1406>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and said<MH559> to the men<MH376>, “I know<MH3045> that the LORD<MH3068> has given<MH5414> you the land<MH776>, and that the terror<MH367> of you has fallen<MH5307> on us, and that all<MH3605> the inhabitants<MH3427> of the land<MH776> have despaired<MH4127> because<MH4480, 6440> of you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>For we have heard<MH8085> how<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> dried<MH3001> up<MH3001> the water<MH4325> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Red<MH5488> Sea<MH3220> before<MH4480, 6440> you when you came<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Egypt<MH4714>, and what<MH834> you did<MH6213a> to the two<MH8147> kings<MH4428> of the Amorites<MH567> who<MH834> were beyond<MH5676> the Jordan<MH3383>, to Sihon<MH5511> and Og<MH5747>, whom<MH834> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>utterly<MH2763a> destroyed<MH2763a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>When we heard<MH8085> <i>these reports,</i> our hearts<MH3824> melted<MH4549> and no<MH3808> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>courage<MH7307> remained<MH6965> in anyone<MH376> any<MH5750> longer<MH5750> because<MH4480, 6440> of you; for the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>, He is God<MH430> in heaven<MH8064> above<MH4480, 4605> and on earth<MH776> below<MH4480, 8478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, please<MH4994> swear<MH7650> to me by the LORD<MH3068>, since<MH3588> I have dealt<MH6213a> kindly<MH2617a> with you, that you also<MH1571> will deal<MH6213a> kindly<MH2617a> with my father’s<MH1> household<MH1004>, and give<MH5414> me a pledge<MH226> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>truth<MH571>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>spare<MH2421a> my father<MH1> and my mother<MH517>, and my brothers<MH251> and my sisters<MH269>, and all<MH3605> who<MH834> belong to them, and save<MH5337> our <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>lives<MH5315> from death<MH4194>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So the men<MH376> said<MH559> to her, “Our <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>life<MH5315> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>for yours if<MH518> you do not tell<MH5046> this<MH2088> business<MH1697> of ours; and it shall come<MH1961> about<MH1961> when the LORD<MH3068> gives<MH5414> us the land<MH776> that we will deal<MH6213a> kindly<MH2617a> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>faithfully<MH571> with you.” <p class="hdg">The Promise to Rahab</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then she let<MH3381> them down<MH3381> by a rope<MH2256a> through<MH1157> the window<MH2474>, for her house<MH1004> was on the city<MH7023> wall<MH2346>, so that she was living<MH3427> on the wall<MH2346>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And she said<MH559> to them, “Go<MH1980> to the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>, so<MH6435> that<MH6435> the pursuers<MH7291> will not<MH6435> encounter<MH6293> you, and hide<MH2247> yourselves there<MH8033> for three<MH7969> days<MH3117> until<MH5704> the pursuers<MH7291> return<MH7725>. Then afterward<MH310> you may go<MH1980> on your way<MH1870>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And the men<MH376> said<MH559> to her, “We <i>shall be</i> exempt<MH5355a> from this<MH2088> oath<MH7621> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>to you which<MH834> you have made us swear<MH7650>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>unless<MH2009>, when we come<MH935> into the land<MH776>, you tie<MH7194> this<MH2088> cord<MH8615a> of scarlet<MH8144> thread<MH2339> in the window<MH2474> through which<MH834> you let<MH3381> us down<MH3381>, and gather<MH622> into your house<MH1004> your father<MH1>, your mother<MH517>, your brothers<MH251>, and all<MH3605> your father’s<MH1> household<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And it shall come<MH1961> about<MH1961> that anyone<MH3605> who<MH834> goes<MH3318> out<MH3318> of the doors<MH1817> of your house<MH1004> outside<MH2351> <i>will have</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>his blood<MH1818> on his own head<MH7218>, and we <i>will be</i> innocent<MH5355a>; but anyone<MH3605> who<MH834> is with you in the house<MH1004>, his blood<MH1818> <i>will be</i> on our head<MH7218> if<MH518> a hand<MH3027> is <i>laid</i> on him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you tell<MH5046> this<MH2088> business<MH1697> of ours, then we shall be exempt<MH5355a> from the oath<MH7621> which<MH834> you have made us swear<MH7650>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>She then said<MH559>, “According to your words<MH1697>, so<MH3651> be it.” So she sent<MH7971> them away<MH7971>, and they departed<MH1980>; and she tied<MH7194> the scarlet<MH8144> cord<MH8615a> in the window<MH2474>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So they departed<MH1980> and came<MH935> to the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>, and remained<MH3427> there<MH8033> for three<MH7969> days<MH3117>, until<MH5704> the pursuers<MH7291> returned<MH7725>. Now the pursuers<MH7291> had searched<MH1245> for <i>them</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>all<MH3605> along the road<MH1870>, but had not found<MH4672> <i>them.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then the two<MH8147> men<MH376> returned<MH7725> and came<MH3381> down<MH3381> from the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>, and they crossed<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> and came<MH935> to Joshua<MH3091> the son<MH1121> of Nun<MH5126>.
