In the Gospels, Martha is depicted as a practical and hospitable woman, as seen in <a href="/luke/10-38.htm">Luke 10:38-42</a>, where she is busy with preparations while her sister Mary sits at Jesus' feet. Jesus' love for Martha underscores His appreciation for her service and dedication, despite gently correcting her priorities. This love is not merely emotional but reflects a deep, spiritual connection.<p><b>and her sister</b><br>The sister referred to here is Mary, who is often associated with deep devotion and worship. In <a href="/john/12-3.htm">John 12:3</a>, Mary anoints Jesus' feet with expensive perfume, an act of profound love and reverence. Jesus' love for Mary is evident in His defense of her actions and His acknowledgment of her understanding of His mission. This phrase emphasizes the inclusive nature of Jesus' love, extending to all members of the family.<p><b>and Lazarus.</b><br>Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary, is central to the narrative of <a href="/john/11.htm">John 11</a>, where Jesus raises him from the dead. This act is a powerful demonstration of Jesus' divine authority over life and death, prefiguring His own resurrection. The love Jesus has for Lazarus is not only personal but also serves as a catalyst for revealing His glory and the power of God. The raising of Lazarus is a pivotal moment that foreshadows the ultimate victory over death through Christ.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/j/jesus.htm">Jesus</a></b><br>The central figure of the New Testament, the Son of God, who demonstrates His divine love and power throughout His ministry.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/m/martha.htm">Martha</a></b><br>A resident of Bethany and sister to Mary and Lazarus. The fact of His abiding two days where He was, seems indeed opposed to the thought of <span class= "ital">His</span> special love for the family. The most probable explanation is that which connects <a href="/context/john/11-5.htm" title="Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.">John 11:5-7</a> together, and makes the love the motive for going into Judaea again.<p>The word rendered "loved" here is different from that in <a href="/john/11-3.htm" title="Therefore his sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.">John 11:3</a>. There the word signifies the love of tender affection; here the word, means the love of chosen friendship. (Comp. <a href="/john/20-2.htm" title="Then she runs, and comes to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken away the LORD out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him.">John 20:2</a>; <a href="/john/21-15.htm" title="So when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, love you me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs.">John 21:15</a> <span class= "ital">et seq.</span>) The difference here is not to be explained, as it frequently has been, by the difference in the persons who were the objects of the love; but by the difference of the persons whose words we read. In the language of the sisters, whose hearts are moved by the brother's illness, the word of fullest emotion is natural. In the language of the Evangelist the other word is no less so.<p>It will be observed that in this verse, as in <a href="/john/11-19.htm" title="And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.">John 11:19</a> <span class= "ital">et seq.,</span> Martha takes the first place as the elder sister. . . . <div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/john/11.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 5.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">Now Jesus loved</span> (<span class="greek">ἠγάπα</span>) <span class="cmt_word">Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.</span> "Felix familia!" The love of selection, friendship, or esteem is the result of long acquaintance, and reveals "the fragmentariness of the evangelic records" (Westcott); see note on ver. 3. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/john/11-5.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Greek</div><span class="word">Now</span><br /><span class="grk">δὲ</span> <span class="translit">(de)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunction<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_1161.htm">Strong's 1161: </a> </span><span class="str2">A primary particle; but, and, etc.</span><br /><br /><span class="word">Jesus</span><br /><span class="grk">Ἰησοῦς</span> <span class="translit">(Iēsous)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_2424.htm">Strong's 2424: </a> </span><span class="str2">Of Hebrew origin; Jesus, the name of our Lord and two other Israelites.</span><br /><br /><span class="word">loved</span><br /><span class="grk">Ἠγάπα</span> <span class="translit">(Ēgapa)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Imperfect Indicative Active - 3rd Person Singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_25.htm">Strong's 25: </a> </span><span class="str2">To love, wish well to, take pleasure in, long for; denotes the love of reason, esteem.
