Removable Nosecone Tips with Integrated Pitot Tubes for High Power Sounding Rocketry</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Over the past decade, collegiate rocketry teams have emerged across the country with various goals: space, liquid-fueled flight, etc. A critical piece of the development of knowledge within a club is the use of so-called "sounding rockets," whose goal is to take in-flight measurements that inform future rocket design. Common measurements include acceleration from inertial measurement units (IMU's), and altitude from barometers. With a properly tuned filter, these measurements can be used to find velocity, but are susceptible to noise, offset, and filter settings. Instead, velocity can be measured more directly and more instantaneously using a pitot tube, which operates by measuring the stagnation pressure. At supersonic speeds, an additional thermodynamic property is necessary to constrain the upstream state. One possibility is the stagnation temperature, measured by a thermocouple in the pitot tube. The routing of the pitot tube from the nosecone tip down to a pressure transducer is complicated by the nosecone's structure. Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) nosecones come with a removable metal tip (without a pitot tube). This provides the opportunity to make custom tips with integrated measurement systems without making the nosecone from scratch. The main design constraint is how the nosecone tip is held down onto the nosecone, using the tension in a threaded rod anchored to a bulkhead below. Because the threaded rod connects into a threaded hole in the center of the nosecone tip, the pitot tube follows a winding path, and the pressure fitting is off-center. Two designs will be presented in the paper, one with a curved pitot tube and a coaxial design that eliminates the need for the winding path by routing pressure through a structural tube. Additionally, three manufacturing methods will be presented for these designs: bound powder filament metal 3D printing, stereo-lithography (SLA) 3D printing, and traditional machining. These will employ three different materials, copper, steel, and proprietary resin. These manufacturing methods and materials are relatively low cost, thus accessible to student researchers. These designs and materials cover multiple use cases, based on how fast the sounding rocket is expected to travel and how important heating effects are - to measure and to avoid melting. This paper will include drawings showing key features and an overview of the design changes necessitated by the manufacture. It will also include a look at the successful use of these nosecone tips and the data they have gathered to date. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=additive%20manufacturing" title="additive manufacturing">additive manufacturing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=machining" title=" machining"> machining</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pitot%20tube" title=" pitot tube"> pitot tube</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sounding%20rocketry" title=" sounding rocketry"> sounding rocketry</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/144292/design-and-manufacture-of-removable-nosecone-tips-with-integrated-pitot-tubes-for-high-power-sounding-rocketry" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/144292.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">164</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12908</span> Soil Nutrient Management Implications of Growing Food Crops within the Coffee Gardens</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pennuel%20P.%20Togonave">Pennuel P. The purpose of this study was to quantify the nutrient management implications of growing food crops within the coffee garden and to investigate the sustainability of this practice through field surveys in two accessible sites (Asaro and Bena) and two remote sites (Marawaka and Baira), in Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. Coffee gardens were selected at each site and surveys were conducted to assess the status of intercropping in each of the smallholder coffee gardens. Food crops in the coffee gardens were sampled for nutrient analysis Survey results indicate intercropping as a common practice in coffee gardens and entailed mixed cropping of food crops in an irregular pattern and spacing. More than 40% of the farmers used 40-60% of their total coffee garden area for intercropping. In remote sites, more than 50% of the coffee garden areas closest to the house were intercropped with food crops compared to 40% of inaccessible sites. In both remote and accessible sites, the most common intercropped food crops were 90% banana (Musa spp) varieties and 50% sugarcane (Saccharum spp). Nutrient analysis of the by-products and residuals of some common intercrops shows the potential to replenish the coffee plant's deficient nutrients like Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Boron and Zinc. Intercropping of coffee gardens is increasing due to land pressure, marketing opportunities, food security and labor supply <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=by-products" title="by-products">by-products</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=coffee" title=" coffee"> coffee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=crops" title=" crops"> crops</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intercropping" title=" intercropping"> intercropping</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nutrients" title=" nutrients"> nutrients</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil" title=" soil"> soil</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/167007/soil-nutrient-management-implications-of-growing-food-crops-within-the-coffee-gardens" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/167007.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">81</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12907</span> Using Computer Vision and Machine Learning to Improve Facility Design for Healthcare Facility Worker Safety</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hengameh%20Hosseini">Hengameh Hosseini</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Design of large healthcare facilities – such as hospitals, multi-service line clinics, and nursing facilities - that can accommodate patients with wide-ranging disabilities is a challenging endeavor and one that is poorly understood among healthcare facility managers, administrators, and executives. An even less-understood extension of this problem is the implications of weakly or insufficiently accommodative design of facilities for healthcare workers in physically-intensive jobs who may also suffer from a range of disabilities and who are therefore at increased risk of workplace accident and injury. Combine this reality with the vast range of facility types, ages, and designs, and the problem of universal accommodation becomes even more daunting and complex. In this study, we focus on the implication of facility design for healthcare workers suffering with low vision who also have physically active jobs. The points of difficulty are myriad and could span health service infrastructure, the equipment used in health facilities, and transport to and from appointments and other services can all pose a barrier to health care if they are inaccessible, less accessible, or even simply less comfortable for people with various disabilities. We conduct a series of surveys and interviews with employees and administrators of 7 facilities of a range of sizes and ownership models in the Northeastern United States and combine that corpus with in-facility observations and data collection to identify five major points of failure common to all the facilities that we concluded could pose safety threats to employees with vision impairments, ranging from very minor to severe. We determine that lack of design empathy is a major commonality among facility management and ownership. We subsequently propose three methods for remedying this lack of empathy-informed design, to remedy the dangers posed to employees: the use of an existing open-sourced Augmented Reality application to simulate the low-vision experience for designers and managers; the use of a machine learning model we develop to automatically infer facility shortcomings from large datasets of recorded patient and employee reviews and feedback; and the use of a computer vision model fine tuned on images of each facility to infer and predict facility features, locations, and workflows, that could again pose meaningful dangers to visually impaired employees of each facility. After conducting a series of real-world comparative experiments with each of these approaches, we conclude that each of these are viable solutions under particular sets of conditions, and finally characterize the range of facility types, workforce composition profiles, and work conditions under which each of these methods would be most apt and successful. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=artificial%20intelligence" title="artificial intelligence">artificial intelligence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=healthcare%20workers" title=" healthcare workers"> healthcare workers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=facility%20design" title=" facility design"> facility design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=disability" title=" disability"> disability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visually%20impaired" title=" visually impaired"> visually impaired</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=workplace%20safety" title=" workplace safety"> workplace safety</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/164760/using-computer-vision-and-machine-learning-to-improve-facility-design-for-healthcare-facility-worker-safety" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/164760.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">116</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12906</span> Determine of Design Variables and Target Reliability Indexes of Underground Structure</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yo-Seph%20Byun">Yo-Seph Byun</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gyu-Phil%20Lee"> Gyu-Phil Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Young-Bin%20Park"> Young-Bin Park</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gye-Chun%20Cho"> Gye-Chun Cho</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seong-Won%20Lee"> Seong-Won Lee</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In Korea, a study on Limit State Design (LSD) for underground structures is being conducted in order to perform more effective design. However, affordances are key to engaging students and enabling teachers to actualize learning goals. E-learning systems (software and artifacts) need to be designed in such a way that the features facilitate perceptions of the affordances with minimal cognition. This study aimed to fill this gap in the literature and encourage further research in this area. It provides guidelines for facilitating the perception of affordances in e-learning design and advances Technology Affordance and Constraints Theory by incorporating the affordance-based design process, the principles of multimedia learning, e-learning design philosophy, and emotional and cognitive affordances. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-learning" title="e-learning">e-learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=technology%20affrodances" title=" technology affrodances"> technology affrodances</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=affordance%20based%20design" title=" affordance based design"> affordance based design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-learning%20design" title=" e-learning design"> e-learning design</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176036/technological-affordances-guidelines-for-e-learning-design" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176036.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">62</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12900</span> Development of a Method to Prepare In-School Tactile Guide Maps for Visually Impaired School Children</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K.%20Doi">K. However, it takes many years to be able to use a tactile guide map without difficulty. Thus, information support, in which audio information is added in addition to tactile information, is required. Consequently, they need also a different approach concerning the structural health monitoring (SHM) issues. There are four main differences between the above mentioned categories: (i) significantly smaller dimensions, (ii) considerably higher rotation speed, (iii) generally small distance between the turbine and the energy consumer and (iv) monitoring assumed in many situations by the owner. In such conditions, nondestructive inspections (NDI) have to be made as much as possible with affordable, yet effective techniques, requiring portable and accessible equipment. Additionally, the turbines and accessories should be easy to mount, dispose and repair. As the materials used for such unit can be metals, composites and combined, the technologies should be adapted accordingly. An example in which the two materials co-exist is the situation in which the damaged metallic skin of a blade is repaired with a composite patch. The paper presents the inspection of the bonding state of the patch, using portable ultrasonic equipment, able to put in place the Lamb wave method, which proves efficient in global and local inspections as well. The equipment is relatively easy to handle and can be borrowed from specialized laboratories or used by a community of small wind turbine users, upon the case. This evaluation is the first in a row, aimed to evaluate efficiency of NDI performed with rather accessible, less sophisticated equipment and related inspection techniques, having field inspection capabilities. The main goal is to extend such inspection procedures to other components of the wind power unit, such as the support tower, water storage tanks, etc. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=structural%20health%20monitoring" title="structural health monitoring">structural health monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=small%20wind%20turbines" title=" small wind turbines"> small wind turbines</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-destructive%20inspection" title=" non-destructive inspection"> non-destructive inspection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=field%20inspection%20capabilities" title=" field inspection capabilities"> field inspection capabilities</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/27146/considerations-upon-structural-health-monitoring-of-small-to-medium-wind-turbines" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/27146.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">339</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12898</span> Correction Requirement to AISC Design Guide 31: Case Study of Web Post Buckling Design for Castellated Beams</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kitjapat%20Phuvoravan">Kitjapat Phuvoravan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Phattaraphong%20Ponsorn"> Phattaraphong Ponsorn</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the design of Castellated beams (CB), the web post buckling acted by horizontal shear force is one of the important failure modes that have to be considered. It is also a dominant governing mode when design following the AISC 31 design guideline which is just published. However, the equation of the web post buckling given by the guideline is still questionable for most of the engineers. So the purpose of this paper is to study and provide a proposed equation for design the web post buckling with more simplified and convenient to use. The study is also including the improper of the safety factor given by the guideline. The proposed design equation is acquired by regression method based on the results of finite element analysis. An amount of Cellular beam simulated to study is modelled by using shell element, analysis with both geometric and material nonlinearity. Many architectural practices are increasingly seeking to incorporate advanced digital software and fabrication in their projects. Proposing an erudite design process that combines digital and practical aspects in a strong frame within the method was resulted from the dissertation research. The digital aspects are the progressive advancements in algorithm design and simulation software. These aspects have assisted the firms to develop more holistic concepts at the early stage and maintain collaboration among disciplines during the design process. The erudite design process enhances the current design processes by encouraging the designer to implement the construction and architecture knowledge within the algorithm to make successful design processes. The erudite design process also involves the ongoing improvements of applying the new method of 3D printing in construction. This is achieved through the ‘data-sketches’. The term ‘data-sketch’ was developed by the author in the dissertation that was recently completed. It accommodates the decisions of the architect on the algorithm. This paper introduces the erudite design process and its components. It will summarize the application of this process in development of the ‘3D printed construction unit’. This paper contributes to overlaying the academic and practice with advanced technology by presenting a design process that transfers the dominance of tool to the learned architect and encourages innovation in design processes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=erudite" title="erudite">erudite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=data-sketch" title=" data-sketch"> data-sketch</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=algorithm%20design%20in%20architecture" title=" algorithm design in architecture"> algorithm design in architecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20process" title=" design process"> design process</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80695/traditional-drawing-bim-and-erudite-design-process" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80695.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">275</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12896</span> Alternative Dispute Resolution Procedures for International Conflicts about Industrial Design</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Moreno%20Liso%20Lourdes">Moreno Liso Lourdes</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The industrial design protects the appearance of part or all of a product resulting from the features of, in particular, the lines, contours, colors, shape, texture or materials of the product itself or its ornamentation. The industrial property offers a different answer depending on the characteristics of the shape object of protection possible, including the trademark and industrial design. There are certain cases where the trademark right invalidate the exclusive right of the industrial design. This can occur in the following situations: 1st) collected as a sign design and trademarked; and 2nd) you want to trademark and protected as a form design (either registered or unregistered). You can either get a trade mark or design right in the same sign or form, provided it meets the legal definition of brand and design and meets the requirements imposed for the protection of each of them, even able to produce an overlap of protection. However, this double protection does not have many advantages. It is, therefore, necessary to choose the best form of legal protection according to the most adequate ratios. The diversity of rights that can use the creator of an industrial design to protect your job requires you to make a proper selection to prevent others, especially their competitors, taking advantage of the exclusivity that guarantees the law. It is necessary to choose between defending the interests of the parties through a judicial or extrajudicial procedure when the conflict arises. In this paper, we opted for the defense through mediation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=industrial%20design" title="industrial design">industrial design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ADR" title=" ADR"> ADR</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Law" title=" Law"> Law</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EUIPO" title=" EUIPO"> EUIPO</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74699/alternative-dispute-resolution-procedures-for-international-conflicts-about-industrial-design" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74699.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">241</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12895</span> Presenting a Model Based on Artificial Neural Networks to Predict the Execution Time of Design Projects</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hamed%20Zolfaghari">Hamed Zolfaghari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mojtaba%20Kord"> Mojtaba Kord</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> After feasibility study the design phase is started and the rest of other phases are highly dependent on this phase. forecasting the duration of design phase could do a miracle and would save a lot of time. The first is to examine the position of SDP within the context of software quality, and the second is to reframe the aspects of SDP into a more concise terms and relations. This paper is divided into four parts, in which after the introduction, a review on related software quality is provided to determine the quality context of SDP. The third part reviews the original SDP and offers a relation model among the SDP aspects. The fourth part explores the design quality metrics available for SOA and proposes a relationship representing the design quality. Among the aspects of design principles, the cohesion and coupling aspect is determined to be the two important aspects for achieving reusability of a service. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SOA" title="SOA">SOA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=software%20quality" title=" software quality"> software quality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=service%20design%20principle" title=" service design principle"> service design principle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reusability" title=" reusability"> reusability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cohesion" title=" cohesion"> cohesion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=coupling" title=" coupling"> coupling</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/107939/reframing-service-oriented-architecture-design-principles-in-software-design-quality" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/107939.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">171</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12893</span> Streamlining the Fuzzy Front-End and Improving the Usability of the Tools Involved</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20N.%20O%27Sullivan">Michael N. Despite this, it is evident that there is a huge gap between their academic prevalence and their industry adoption. For the fuzzy front-end, in particular, there is a wide range of tools to choose from, including the Kano Model, the House of Quality, and many others. In fact, there are so many tools that it can often be difficult for teams to know which ones to use and how they interact with one another. Moreover, while the benefits of using these tools are obvious to industrialists, they are rarely used as they carry a learning curve that is too steep and they become too complex to manage over time. In essence, it is commonly believed that they are simply not worth the effort required to learn and use them. This research explores a streamlined process for the fuzzy front-end, assembling the most effective tools and making them accessible to everyone. The process was developed iteratively over the course of 3 years, following over 80 final year NPD teams from engineering, design, technology, and construction as they carried a product from concept through to production specification. Questionnaires, focus groups, and observations were used to understand the usability issues with the tools involved, and a human-centred design approach was adopted to produce a solution to these issues. The solution takes the form of physical toolkit, similar to a board game, which allows the team to play through an example of a new product development in order to understand the process and the tools, before using it for their own product development efforts. A complimentary website is used to enhance the physical toolkit, and it provides more examples of the tools being used, as well as deeper discussions on each of the topics, allowing teams to adapt the process to their skills, preferences and product type. Teams found the solution very useful and intuitive and experienced significantly less confusion and mistakes with the process than teams who did not use it. Those with a design background found it especially useful for the engineering principles like Quality Function Deployment, while those with an engineering or technology background found it especially useful for design and customer requirements acquisition principles, like Voice of the Customer. Products developed using the toolkit are added to the website as more examples of how it can be used, creating a loop which helps future teams understand how the toolkit can be adapted to their project, whether it be a small consumer product or a large B2B service. The toolkit unlocks the potential of these beneficial tools to those in industry, both for large, experienced teams and for inexperienced start-ups. It allows users to assess the market potential of their product concept faster and more effectively, arriving at the product design stage with technical requirements prioritized according to their customers’ needs and wants. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=new%20product%20development" title="new product development">new product development</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fuzzy%20front-end" title=" fuzzy front-end"> fuzzy front-end</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=usability" title=" usability"> usability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kano%20model" title=" Kano model"> Kano model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quality%20function%20deployment" title=" quality function deployment"> quality function deployment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=voice%20of%20customer" title=" voice of customer"> voice of customer</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/101816/streamlining-the-fuzzy-front-end-and-improving-the-usability-of-the-tools-involved" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/101816.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">108</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12892</span> Development of an Interactive Display-Control Layout Design System for Trains Based on Train Drivers’ Mental Models</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hyeonkyeong%20Yang">Hyeonkyeong Yang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Minseok%20Son"> Minseok Son</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Taekbeom%20Yoo"> Taekbeom Yoo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Woojin%20Park"> Woojin Park</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Human error is the most salient contributing factor to railway accidents. To reduce the frequency of human errors, many researchers and train designers have adopted ergonomic design principles for designing display-control layout in rail cab. There exist a number of approaches for designing the display control layout based on optimization methods. However, the ergonomically optimized layout design may not be the best design for train drivers, since the drivers have their own mental models based on their experiences. Consequently, the drivers may prefer the existing display-control layout design over the optimal design, and even show better driving performance using the existing design compared to that using the optimal design. Thus, in addition to ergonomic design principles, train drivers’ mental models also need to be considered for designing display-control layout in rail cab. This paper developed an ergonomic assessment system of display-control layout design, and an interactive layout design system that can generate design alternatives and calculate ergonomic assessment score in real-time. The design alternatives generated from the interactive layout design system may not include the optimal design from the ergonomics point of view. However, the system’s strength is that it considers train drivers’ mental models, which can help generate alternatives that are more friendly and easier to use for train drivers. Also, with the developed system, non-experts in ergonomics, such as train drivers, can refine the design alternatives and improve ergonomic assessment score in real-time. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=display-control%20layout%20design" title="display-control layout design">display-control layout design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interactive%20layout%20design%20system" title=" interactive layout design system"> interactive layout design system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mental%20model" title=" mental model"> mental model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=train%20drivers" title=" train drivers"> train drivers</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52550/development-of-an-interactive-display-control-layout-design-system-for-trains-based-on-train-drivers-mental-models" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52550.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">306</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12891</span> A Virtual Reality Simulation Tool for Reducing the Risk of Building Content during Earthquakes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ali%20Asgary">Ali Asgary</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Haopeng%20Zhou"> Haopeng Zhou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ghassem%20Tofighi"> Ghassem Tofighi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Use of virtual (VR), augmented reality (AR), and extended reality technologies for training and education has increased in recent years as more hardware and software tools have become available and accessible to larger groups of users. Similarly, the applications of these technologies in earthquake related training and education are on the rise. Several studies have reported promising results for the use of VR and AR for evacuation behaviour and training under earthquake situations. They simulate the impacts that earthquake has on buildings, buildings’ contents, and how building occupants and users can find safe spots or open paths to outside. Considering that considerable number of earthquake injuries and fatalities are linked to the behaviour, our goal is to use these technologies to reduce the impacts of building contents on people. Building on our artificial intelligence (AI) based indoor earthquake risk assessment application that enables users to use their mobile device to assess the risks associated with building contents during earthquakes, we develop a virtual reality application to demonstrate the behavior of different building contents during earthquakes, their associate moving, spreading, falling, and collapsing risks, and their risk mitigation methods. We integrate realistic seismic models, building contents behavior with and without risk mitigation measures in virtual reality environment. The application can be used for training of architects, interior design experts, and building users to enhance indoor safety of the buildings that can sustain earthquakes. This paper describes and demonstrates the application development background, structure, components, and usage. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=virtual%20reality" title="virtual reality">virtual reality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthquake%20damage" title=" earthquake damage"> earthquake damage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=building%20content" title=" building content"> building content</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=indoor%20risks" title=" indoor risks"> indoor risks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthquake%20risk%20mitigation" title=" earthquake risk mitigation"> earthquake risk mitigation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interior%20design" title=" interior design"> interior design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unity%20game%20engine" title=" unity game engine"> unity game engine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oculus" title=" oculus"> oculus</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/166448/a-virtual-reality-simulation-tool-for-reducing-the-risk-of-building-content-during-earthquakes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/166448.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">105</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12890</span> Knitting Stitches’ Manipulation for Catenary Textile Structures</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Virginia%20Melnyk">Virginia Melnyk</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper explores the design for catenary structure using knitted textiles. Using the advantages of Grasshopper and Kangaroo parametric software to simulate and pre-design an overall form, the design is then translated to a pattern that can be made with hand manipulated stitches on a knitting machine. The textile takes advantage of the structure of knitted materials and the ability for it to stretch. Using different types of stitches to control the amount of stretch that can occur in portions of the textile generates an overall formal design. The textile is then hardened in an upside-down hanging position and then flipped right-side-up. This then becomes a structural catenary form. In these techniques, design process starts by parameterizing the important features of design models (typically the key dimensions), with the implementation of design constraints. The design constraints help to retain the overall shape of the model while modifying its parameters. However, the process of initializing an appropriate number of design parameters and constraints is the crucial part of parametric design techniques, especially for complex surface models such as yacht hull. This paper introduces a method to create complex surface models in favor of parametric design techniques, a method to define the right number of parameters and respective design constraints, and a system to implement design parameters in contract to design constraints schema. For this, in our proposed approach the design process starts by dividing the yacht hull into three sections. Each section consists of different shape lines, which form the overall shape of yacht hull. The shape lines are created using Cubic Bezier Curves, which allow larger design flexibility. Design parameters and constraints are defined on the shape lines in 3D design space to facilitate the designers for better and individual handling of parameters. Afterwards, shape modifiers are developed, which allow the modification of each parameter while satisfying the respective set of criteria and design constraints. Such as, geometric continuities should be maintained between the shape lines of the three sections, fairness of the hull surfaces should be preserved after modification and while design modification, effect of a single parameter should be negligible on other parameters. The constraints are defined individually on shape lines of each section and mutually between the shape lines of two connecting sections. In order to validate and visualize design results of our shape modifiers, a real time graphic interface is created. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20parameter" title="design parameter">design parameter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20constraints" title=" design constraints"> design constraints</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shape%20modifies" title=" shape modifies"> shape modifies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=yacht%20hull" title=" yacht hull"> yacht hull</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52949/cad-tool-for-parametric-design-modification-of-yacht-hull-surface-models" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52949.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">301</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12888</span> Humanising Hospital Retrofitting: The Case Study of Malaysia Public Hospitals</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nur%20Faridatull%20Syafinaz%20Ahmad%20Tajudin">Nur Faridatull Syafinaz Ahmad Tajudin</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A hospital is a setting where individuals who are ill or injured are treated and cared for by doctors and nurses. Sanatoriums are settings where people can receive treatment and rest, particularly when recovering from a protracted illness. According to the report, hospitals are primarily designed to meet the needs of medical personnel by maximising their functionality and workflow. Hospitals frequently do a poor job of determining the patients' physical and emotional requirements and expectations. The literature on hospital design has recently focused more on the seeming need to "humanise" medical facilities. Despite the popularity of this design objective, "humanising" a space has hardly ever been defined or critically examined. The term "humanistic design" covered a broad range of design elements and designer interpretations. In reality, the hospital's layout and design the hospital may have a massive effect on patients' feel experience things and heal. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hospital%20retrofitting" title="hospital retrofitting">hospital retrofitting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hospital%20design" title=" hospital design"> hospital design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=humanising%20hospital" title=" humanising hospital"> humanising hospital</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spatial%20design" title=" spatial design"> spatial design</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/157799/humanising-hospital-retrofitting-the-case-study-of-malaysia-public-hospitals" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/157799.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">120</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12887</span> Digital Library Evaluation by SWARA-WASPAS Method</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mehmet%20Y%C3%B6r%C3%BCko%C4%9Flu">Mehmet Yörükoğlu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Serhat%20Ayd%C4%B1n"> Serhat Aydın</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Since the discovery of the manuscript, mechanical methods for storing, transferring and using the information have evolved into digital methods over the time. The Step-Wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis-Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment (SWARA-WASPAS) method is used with flexibility and easy calculation steps for the evaluation of digital library criteria. To overcome the limitation of the design problem in practice, this paper proposes a new an acoustic analysis algorithm to optimize design the parameter of the loudspeaker. The material character of cone paper and the loudspeaker edge was the design parameter, and the vibration displacement of the cone paper was the objective function. The results of the analysis were compared with the predicted value. They had high accuracy to the predicted value. These results suggest that, though the parameter design is difficult by experience and intuition, it can be performed comparatively easily using the optimization design by the developed acoustic analysis software. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=air%20viscosity" title="air viscosity">air viscosity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=loudspeaker" title=" loudspeaker"> loudspeaker</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cone%20paper" title=" cone paper"> cone paper</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=edge" title=" edge"> edge</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimization" title=" optimization"> optimization</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60331/optimization-of-a-cone-loudspeaker-parameter-of-design-parameters-by-analysis-of-a-narrow-acoustic-sound-pathway" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60331.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">401</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12885</span> Navigating Life Transitions for Young People with Vision Impairment: A Community-Based Participatory Research Approach to Accessibility and Diversity</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aikaterini%20Tavoulari">Aikaterini Tavoulari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Proulx"> Michael Proulx</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karin%20Petrini"> Karin Petrini</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Objective: This study aims to explore the unique challenges faced by young individuals with vision impairment (VI) during key life transitions, utilizing a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to identify limitations and positive aspects of existing support systems, with a focus on accessibility and diversity. Design: The study employs a qualitative CBPR design, engaging young participants with VI through online and in-person working groups over six months, prioritizing their active involvement and diverse perspectives. Methods: Twenty-one young individuals with VI from across the UK and with different VI conditions were recruited to participate in the study via a climbing and virtual reality event and stakeholders’ support. Data collection methods included open discussions, forum exchanges, and qualitative questionnaires. The data were analyzed with NVivo using inductive thematic analysis to identify key themes and patterns related to the challenges and experiences of life transitions for this diverse population. Results: The analysis revealed barriers to accessibility, such as assumptions about what a person with VI can do, inaccessibility to material, noisy environments, and insufficient training with assistive technologies. Enablers included guidance from diverse professionals and peers, multisensory approaches (beyond tactile), and peer collaborations. This study underscores the need for developing accessible and tailored strategies together with these young people to address the specific needs of this diverse population during critical life transitions (e.g., to independent living, employment and higher education). Conclusion: Engaging and co-designing effective approaches and tools with young people with VI is key to tackling the specific accessibility barriers they encounter. These approaches should be targeted at different transitional periods of their life journey, promoting diversity and inclusion. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vision%20impairement" title="vision impairement">vision impairement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=life%20transitions" title=" life transitions"> life transitions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=qualitative%20research" title=" qualitative research"> qualitative research</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=community-based%20participatory%20design" title=" community-based participatory design"> community-based participatory design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=accessibility" title=" accessibility"> accessibility</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185282/navigating-life-transitions-for-young-people-with-vision-impairment-a-community-based-participatory-research-approach-to-accessibility-and-diversity" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185282.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">48</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12884</span> Research on the Strategy of Whole-Life-Cycle Campus Design from the Perspective of Sustainable Concept: A Case Study on Hangzhou Senior High School in Zhejiang</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fan%20Yang">Fan Yang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> With the development of social economy and the popularization of quality education, the Chinese government invests more and more funding in education. To test the reliability of he designed system, it is tested in different environment and different work burden such as multi-user environment. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=software%20engineering" title="software engineering">software engineering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design" title=" design"> design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=system%20requirement" title=" system requirement"> system requirement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=integration" title=" integration"> integration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unified%20modeling%20language" title=" unified modeling language"> unified modeling language</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17603/object-oriented-software-engineering-approach-to-industrial-information-system-design-and-implementation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17603.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">570</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12881</span> Comparison of E-learning and Face-to-Face Learning Models Through the Early Design Stage in Architectural Design Education</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=G%C3%BClay%20Dalg%C4%B1%C3%A7">Gülay Dalgıç</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gildis%20Tachir"> Gildis Tachir</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Architectural design studios are ambiencein where architecture design is realized as a palpable product in architectural education. In the design studios that the architect candidate will use in the design processthe information, the methods of approaching the design problem, the solution proposals, etc., are set uptogetherwith the studio coordinators. The architectural design process, on the other hand, is complex and uncertain.Candidate architects work in a process that starts with abstre and ill-defined problems. This process starts with the generation of alternative solutions with the help of representation tools, continues with the selection of the appropriate/satisfactory solution from these alternatives, and then ends with the creation of an acceptable design/result product. In the studio ambience, many designs and thought relationships are evaluated, the most important step is the early design phase. In the early design phase, the first steps of converting the information are taken, and converted information is used in the constitution of the first design decisions. This phase, which positively affects the progress of the design process and constitution of the final product, is complex and fuzzy than the other phases of the design process. In this context, the aim of the study is to investigate the effects of face-to-face learning model and e-learning model on the early design phase. In the study, the early design phase was defined by literature research. The data of the defined early design phase criteria were obtained with the feedback graphics created for the architect candidates who performed e-learning in the first year of architectural education and continued their education with the face-to-face learning model. The findings of the data were analyzed with the common graphics program. It is thought that this research will contribute to the establishment of a contemporary architectural design education model by reflecting the evaluation of the data and results on architectural education. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=education%20modeling" title="education modeling">education modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=architecture%20education" title=" architecture education"> architecture education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20education" title=" design education"> design education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20process" title=" design process"> design process</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142775/comparison-of-e-learning-and-face-to-face-learning-models-through-the-early-design-stage-in-architectural-design-education" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142775.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">137</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12880</span> Boundary Motion by Curvature: Accessible Modeling of Oil Spill Evaporation/Dissipation </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gary%20Miller">Gary Miller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andriy%20Didenko"> Andriy Didenko</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20Allison"> David Allison</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The boundary of a region in the plane shrinks according to its curvature.
