In the ancient Near Eastern context, the first-born son traditionally held a place of privilege and responsibility within the family structure. This status is reflected in various biblical narratives and laws, where the first-born often receives a double portion of the inheritance and assumes leadership roles within the family.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the concept of the first-born is introduced early in the narrative. Genesis 4:4 records the offering of Abel, who, though not the first-born, presents a more favorable sacrifice to God than his elder brother Cain. This sets a precedent for the recurring biblical theme where God's favor does not always align with human customs regarding birth order.

The first-born's significance is further emphasized in the laws given to Israel. Exodus 13:2 commands, "Consecrate to Me every firstborn male. The firstborn from every womb among the Israelites belongs to Me, both of man and beast." This consecration underscores the first-born's role as belonging to God, a principle that is reiterated in the redemption of the first-born in Numbers 3:13: "For all the firstborn are Mine. On the day I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They are Mine; I am the LORD."

The Passover event in Exodus 12 further highlights the importance of the first-born. The final plague in Egypt, the death of the first-born, leads to the liberation of the Israelites. This event establishes the Passover as a perpetual reminder of God's deliverance and the sanctity of the first-born.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the term "first-born" takes on additional theological dimensions, particularly in relation to Jesus Christ. Colossians 1:15 refers to Jesus as "the firstborn over all creation," indicating His preeminence and authority. This title affirms Christ's divine nature and His role in creation, as further elaborated in Colossians 1:16-17.

Moreover, Romans 8:29 describes believers as being "conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers." Here, the term "first-born" signifies Christ's role as the head of a new spiritual family, with believers as His siblings. This familial imagery underscores the intimate relationship between Christ and His followers.

Hebrews 12:23 speaks of "the assembly of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven," referring to the church as a collective of those who share in the inheritance of Christ. This passage highlights the spiritual inheritance and status granted to believers through their union with Christ, the ultimate First-born.

Symbolic and Theological Implications

Theologically, the concept of the first-born extends beyond mere birth order to encompass themes of preeminence, inheritance, and divine election. The first-born's role as a mediator between God and humanity is exemplified in Christ, who, as the First-born, fulfills the law and establishes a new covenant.

The first-born's symbolic significance is also evident in the typology of Israel as God's "firstborn son" (Exodus 4:22). This designation emphasizes Israel's chosen status and covenantal relationship with God, foreshadowing the ultimate fulfillment in Christ.

In summary, the term "first-born" in the Bible encompasses a rich tapestry of meanings, from familial roles and legal rights to profound theological truths about Christ's supremacy and the believer's identity in Him.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Sons enjoyed certain special privileges (Deuteronomy 21:17; Genesis 25:23, 31, 34; 49:3; 1 Chronicles 5:1; Hebrews 12:16; Psalm 89:27). (see BIRTHRIGHT.)
The "first-born of the poor" signifies the most miserable of the poor (Isaiah 14:30). The "church of the first-born" signifies the church of the redeemed.
The destruction of the first-born was the last of the ten plagues inflicted on the Egyptians (Exodus 11:1-8; 12:29, 30).
Menephtah is probably the Pharaoh whose first-born was slain. His son did not succeed or survive his father, but died early. The son's tomb has been found at Thebes unfinished, showing it was needed earlier than was expected. Some of the records on the tomb are as follows: "The son whom Menephtah loves; who draws towards him his father's heart, the singer, the prince of archers, who governed Egypt on behalf of his father. Dead."
First-born, Redemption of
From the beginning the office of the priesthood in each family belonged to the eldest son. But when the extensive plan of sacrificial worship was introduced, requiring a company of men to be exclusively devoted to this ministry, the primitive office of the first-born was superseded by that of the Levites (Numbers 3:11-13), and it was ordained that the first-born of man and of unclean animals should henceforth be redeemed (18:15).
The laws concerning this redemption of the first-born of man are recorded in Exodus 13:12-15; 22:29; 34:20; Numbers 3:45; 8:17; 18:16; Leviticus 12:2, 4.
The first-born male of every clean animal was to be given up to the priest for sacrifice (Deuteronomy 12:6; Exodus 13:12; 34:20; Numbers 18:15-17).
But the first-born of unclean animals was either to be redeemed or sold and the price given to the priest (Leviticus 27:11-13, 27). The first-born of an ass, if not redeemed, was to be put to death (Exodus 13:13; 34:20).
First-born, Sanctification of the
A peculiar sanctity was attached to the first-born both of man and of cattle. God claimed that the first-born males of man and of animals should be consecrated to him, the one as a priest (Exodus 19:22, 24), representing the family to which he belonged, and the other to be offered up in sacrifice (Genesis 4:4).
Greek
4416. prototokos -- first-born
... firstborn From protos and the alternate of tikto; first-born (usually as noun,
literally or figuratively) -- firstbegotten(-born). see GREEK protos. ...
//strongsnumbers.com/greek2/4416.htm - 7k
4416a. prototokos -- first-born
... Word Origin from protos and tokos (childbirth, offspring); from tikto Definition
first-born NASB Word Usage firstborn (8). 4416, 4416a. prototokos. 4416b . ...
//strongsnumbers.com/greek2/4416a.htm - 5k
4415. prototokia -- the rights of the first-born
... the rights of the first-born.
