now<MH6258> therefore, listen<MH8085> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>words<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635> says<MH559>: &#8216;I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>punish<MH6485> Amalek<MH6002> <i>for</i> what<MH834> he did<MH6213a> to Israel<MH3478>, in that he obstructed<MH7760> him on the way<MH1870> while he was coming<MH5927> up<MH5927> from Egypt<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> go<MH1980> and strike<MH5221> Amalek<MH6002> and completely<MH2763a> destroy<MH2763a> everything<MH3605> that he has, and do not spare<MH2550> him; but put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191> both<MH4480> man<MH376> and woman<MH802>, child<MH5768> and infant<MH3243>, ox<MH7794> and sheep<MH7716>, camel<MH1581> and donkey<MH2543>.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> summoned<MH8085> the people<MH5971a> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>counted<MH6485> them in Telaim<MH2923>: two<MH3967> hundred<MH3967> thousand<MH505> foot<MH7273> soldiers<MH7273> and ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> of Judah<MH3063>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And Saul<MH7586> came<MH935> to the city<MH5892b> of Amalek<MH6002> and set<MH693> an<MH693> ambush<MH693> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>wadi<MH5158a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to the Kenites<MH7017>, &#8220;Go<MH1980>, get<MH5493> away<MH5493>, go<MH3381> down<MH3381> from among<MH8432> the Amalekites<MH6003>, so that I do not destroy<MH622> you along<MH5973> with<MH5973> them; for you showed<MH6213a> kindness<MH2617a> to all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> when they went<MH5927> up<MH5927> from Egypt<MH4714>.&#8221; So the Kenites<MH7017> got<MH5493> away<MH5493> from among<MH8432> the Amalekites<MH6002>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>defeated<MH5221> the Amalekites<MH6002>, from Havilah<MH2341> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>going<MH935> toward Shur<MH7793>, which<MH834> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>east<MH5921, 6440> of Egypt<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>He captured<MH8610> Agag<MH90> the king<MH4428> of the Amalekites<MH6002> alive<MH2416a>, and completely<MH2763a> destroyed<MH2763a> all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But Saul<MH7586> and the people<MH5971a> spared<MH2550> Agag<MH90> and the best<MH4315> of the sheep<MH6629>, the oxen<MH1241>, the more<MH4932> valuable<MH4932> <i>animals,</i> the lambs<MH3733c>, and everything<MH3605> that was good<MH2896b>, and were unwilling<MH3808, 14> to destroy<MH2763a> them completely<MH2763a>; but everything<MH3605, 4399> despicable<MH959> and weak<MH4549>, that they completely<MH2763a> destroyed<MH2763a>. <p class="hdg">Samuel Rebukes Saul</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Samuel<MH8050>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>&#8220;I regret<MH5162> that I have made<MH4427a> Saul<MH7586> king<MH4428>, because<MH3588> he has turned<MH7725> back<MH7725> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>following<MH310> Me and has not carried<MH6965> out<MH6965> My commands<MH1697>.&#8221; And Samuel<MH8050> was<MH2734> furious<MH2734> and cried<MH2199> out<MH2199> to the LORD<MH3068> all<MH3605> night<MH3915>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Samuel<MH8050> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> to meet<MH7122> Saul<MH7586>; and it was reported<MH5046> to Samuel<MH8050>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Saul<MH7586> came<MH935> to Carmel<MH3760>, and behold<MH2009>, he set<MH5324> up<MH5324> a monument<MH3027> for himself, then turned<MH5437> and proceeded<MH5674a> on<MH5674a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>down<MH3381> to Gilgal<MH1537>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So Samuel<MH8050> came<MH935> to Saul<MH7586>, and Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Blessed<MH1288> are you of the LORD<MH3068>! I have carried<MH6965> out<MH6965> the command<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559>, &#8220;What<MH4100> then is this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>bleating<MH6963> of the sheep<MH6629> in my ears<MH241>, and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>bellowing<MH6963> of the oxen<MH1241> which<MH834> I hear<MH8085>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Saul<MH7586> said<MH559>, &#8220;They have brought<MH935> them from the Amalekites<MH6003>, for the people<MH5971a> spared<MH2550> the best<MH4315> of the sheep<MH6629> and oxen<MH1241> to sacrifice<MH2076> to the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>; but the rest<MH3498> we have completely<MH2763a> destroyed<MH2763a>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, &#8220;Stop<MH7503>, and let me inform<MH5046> you of what<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> said<MH1696> to me last night<MH3915>.&#8221; And he said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Speak<MH1696>!&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Is it not <i>true,</i> though<MH518> you were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>insignificant<MH6996b> in your own eyes<MH5869>, <i>that</i> you <i>became</i> the head<MH7218> of the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478>? For the LORD<MH3068> anointed<MH4886> you as king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> sent<MH7971> you on a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>mission<MH1870>, and said<MH559>, &#8216;Go<MH1980> and completely<MH2763a> destroy<MH2763a> the sinners<MH2400>, the Amalekites<MH6002>, and fight<MH3898a> against them until<MH5704> they are eliminated<MH3615>.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Why<MH4100> then did you not obey<MH8085> the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068>? Instead, you loudly<MH5860b> rushed<MH5860b> upon the spoils<MH7998> and did<MH6213a> what<MH7451a> was<MH7451a> evil<MH7451a> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068>!&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to Samuel<MH8050>, &#8220;I did obey<MH8085> the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068>, for I went<MH1980> on the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>mission<MH1870> on which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> sent<MH7971> me; and I have brought<MH935> Agag<MH90> the king<MH4428> of Amalek<MH6002>, and have completely<MH2763a> destroyed<MH2763a> the Amalekites<MH6002>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But the people<MH5971a> took<MH3947> <i>some</i> of the spoils<MH7998>, sheep<MH6629> and oxen<MH1241>, the choicest<MH7225> of the things<MH2764a> designated<MH2764a> for<MH2764a> destruction<MH2764a>, to sacrifice<MH2076> to the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> at Gilgal<MH1537>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;Does the LORD<MH3068> have as much delight<MH2656> in burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> and sacrifices<MH2077> <t><p class="indent1">As in obeying<MH8085> the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068>? <t><p class="indent1">Behold<MH2009>, to obey<MH8085> is better<MH2896a> than<MH4480> a sacrifice<MH2077>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>And</i> to pay<MH7181> attention<MH7181> is <i>better</i> than<MH4480> the fat<MH2459> of rams<MH352a>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>&#8220;For rebellion<MH4805> is <i>as reprehensible as</i> the sin<MH2403b> of divination<MH7081>, <t><p class="indent1">And insubordination<MH6484> is <i>as reprehensible as</i> false<MH205> religion<MH205> and idolatry<MH8655>. <t><p class="indent1">Since<MH3282> you have rejected<MH3988a> the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, <t><p class="indent1">He has also rejected<MH3988a> you from <i>being</i> king<MH4428>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to Samuel<MH8050>, &#8220;I have sinned<MH2398>, for I have violated<MH5674a> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>command<MH6310> of the LORD<MH3068> and your words<MH1697>, because<MH3588> I feared<MH3372a> the people<MH5971a> and listened<MH8085> to their voice<MH6963>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, please<MH4994> pardon<MH5545> my sin<MH2403b> and return<MH7725> with me, so that I may worship<MH2331c> the LORD<MH3068>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, &#8220;I will not return<MH7725> with you; for you have rejected<MH3988a> the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, and the LORD<MH3068> has rejected<MH3988a> you from being<MH1961> king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then Samuel<MH8050> turned<MH5437> to go<MH1980>, but <i>Saul</i> grasped<MH2388> the edge<MH3671> of his robe<MH4598>, and it tore<MH7167> off<MH7167>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>So Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;The LORD<MH3068> has torn<MH7167> the kingdom<MH4468> of Israel<MH3478> from you today<MH3117> and has given<MH5414> it to your neighbor<MH7453>, who is better<MH2896a> than<MH4480> you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Also<MH1571> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>Glory<MH5331> of Israel<MH3478> will not lie<MH8266> nor<MH3808> change<MH5162> His mind<MH5162>; for He is not a man<MH120>, that He would change<MH5162> His mind<MH5162>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then <i>Saul</i> said<MH559>, &#8220;I have sinned<MH2398>; <i>but</i> please<MH4994> honor<MH3513> me now<MH6258> before<MH5048> the elders<MH2205> of my people<MH5971a> and before<MH5048> <i>all</i> Israel<MH3478>, and go<MH7725> back<MH7725> with me, so that I may worship<MH2331c> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>So Samuel<MH8050> went<MH7725> back<MH7725> following<MH310> Saul<MH7586>, and Saul<MH7586> worshiped<MH2331c> the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Then Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559>, &#8220;Bring<MH5066> me Agag<MH90>, the king<MH4428> of the Amalekites<MH6002>.&#8221; And Agag<MH90> came<MH1980> to him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>cheerfully<MH4575b>. And Agag<MH90> said<MH559>, &#8220;Surely<MH403> the bitterness<MH4751> of death<MH4194> is gone<MH5493>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>But Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559>, &#8220;As your sword<MH2719> has made<MH7921> women<MH802> childless<MH7921>, so<MH3651> shall your mother<MH517> be<MH7921> childless<MH7921> among<MH4480> women<MH802>.&#8221; And Samuel<MH8050> cut<MH8158> Agag<MH90> to<MH8158> pieces<MH8158> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> at Gilgal<MH1537>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Then Samuel<MH8050> went<MH1980> to Ramah<MH7414>, but Saul<MH7586> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to his house<MH1004> at Gibeah<MH1390> of Saul<MH7586>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/15-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And Samuel<MH8050> did not see<MH7200> Saul<MH7586> again<MH3254> until<MH5704> the day<MH3117> of his death<MH4194>, though<MH3588> Samuel<MH8050> mourned<MH56> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>Saul<MH7586>.
