And multitudes come together to Him again; and, as He was wont, He was teaching them again.<p> <A name="3"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>And <i>the</i> Pharisees, corning to Him, were asking Him, "Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife!" tempting Him. <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And He, answering, said to them, <FR>"What did Moses command you?"<Fr> <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And they said, "Moses permitted to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away." <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But Jesus said to them, <FR>"Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this commandment.<Fr> <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><FR>But from the beginning of the creation, 'Male and female made He them.'<Fr> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><FR>For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, [and shall cleave to his wife],<Fr> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><FR>and the two shall become one flesh; so that they are no more two, but one flesh.<Fr> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span><FR>What, therefore, God joined together, let not man put asunder."<Fr><p> <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And in the house the disciples asked Him again concerning this. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And He saith to them, <FR>"Whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery against her;<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><FR>and, if she herself, having put away her husband, marries another, she commits adultery."<Fr><p> <A name="14"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Blesses the Children<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/19.htm#13">Matthew 19:13–15</a>; <a href ="../luke/18.htm#15">Luke 18:15–17</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And they were bringing little children to Him, that He might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But Jesus, seeing it, was much displeased, and said to them, <FR>"Permit the little children to come to Me; forbid them not; for to such belongs the Kingdom of God.<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span><FR>Verily I say to you, whosoever does not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child, will in no wise enter therein."<Fr> <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And, taking them in His arms, He was blessing them, placing His hands upon them.<p> <A name="18"></a><p class="hdg">The Rich Young Man<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/19.htm#16">Matthew 19:16–30</a>; <a href ="../luke/18.htm#18">Luke 18:18–30</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And, as He was going forth into the way, one, running to Him, and kneeling, was asking Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do, that I may inherit eternal life?" <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And Jesus said to Him, <FR>"Why do you call Me good? No one is good, but One?God.<Fr> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span><FR>You know the commandments, 'Do not kill,' 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not steal,' Do not bear false witness,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and mother.'"<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And he said to Him, "Teacher, all these things I observed from my youth." <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And Jesus, looking on him, loved him, and said to him, <FR>"One thing is wanting to you: go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in Heaven, and come, follow Me."<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But, becoming gloomy at this saying, he went away grieved; for he was one having great possessions.<p> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And, looking around, Jesus saith to His disciples, <FR>"With what difficulty shall those who have riches enter into the Kingdom of God!"<Fr> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus, again answering, saith to them, <FR>"Children, how difficult <i>it is</i> [for those who trust in riches] to enter into the Kingdom of God!<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God."<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And they were being exceedingly astonished, saying to Him, "And who can be saved?" <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Jesus, looking upon them, saith, <FR>"With men it is impossible, but not with God: for all things are possible with God."<Fr><p> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Peter began to say to Him, "Behold, we left all, and followed Thee." <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Jesus said, <FR>"Verily I say to you, there is no one who left house, or brothers, or sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or lands, for My sake and the Gospel's sake,<Fr> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brothers, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.<Fr> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>But many <i>that are</i> first shall be last; and the last first."<Fr><p> <A name="33"></a><p class="hdg">The Third Prediction of the Passion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/20.htm#17">Matthew 20:17–19</a>; <a href ="../luke/18.htm#31">Luke 18:31–34</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going before them. And they were being amazed: and those following <i>Him</i> were being terrified. And, again taking with Him the twelve, He began to tell them the things about to happen to Him: <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><FR>"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered up to the high priests, and to the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, and will deliver Him up to the gentiles;<Fr> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span><FR>and they will mock Him and will spit upon Him, and will scourge Him, and will kill Him; and after three days He will rise again."<Fr><p> <A name="36"></a><p class="hdg">The Request of James and John<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/20.htm#20">Matthew 20:20–28</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come to Him, saying to Him, "Teacher, we wish that Thou wouldest do for us whatsoever we ask." <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And He said to them, <FR>"What do you wish that I should do for you?"<Fr> <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And they said to Him, "Grant to us that we may sit, one on Thy right hand, and one on Thy left, in Thy Kingdom." <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>But Jesus said to them, <FR>"Ye know not what ye are asking. Are ye able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be immersed with the immersion that I am immersed with?"<Fr> <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And they said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, <FR>"The cup that I drink ye shall drink; and the immersion with which I am immersed shall ye be immersed;<Fr> <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span><FR>but to sit on My right hand, or on My left, is not Mine to give, but <i>it is</i> for those for whom it has been prepared."<Fr><p> <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And the ten, hearing <i>it</i>, began to be much displeased with James and John. <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And Jesus, calling them to Him, saith to them, <FR>"Ye know that those thinking to rule over the gentiles lord it over them; and their great ones exercise authority over them;<Fr> <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span><FR>but it is not so among you; but whosoever wishes to become great among you shall be your minister;<Fr> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span><FR>and whosoever wishes to be first among you shall be servant of all:<Fr> <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span><FR>for even the Son of Man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his soul a ransom for many."<Fr><p> <A name="47"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Heals Bartimaeus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/20.htm#29">Matthew 20:29–34</a>; <a href ="../luke/18.htm#35">Luke 18:35–43</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And they come to Jericho: and, as He was going forth from Jericho, with His disciples and a great multitude, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road. <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And, hearing that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, and say, "Son of David! Jesus! have mercy on me!" <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/10-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And many were rebuking him, that he should be silent.
