Now I had not been<MH1961> sad<MH7451a> in his presence<MH6440>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to me, &#8220;Why<MH4069> is your face<MH6440> sad<MH7451a>, though you are<MH2470a> not ill<MH2470a>? This<MH2088> is nothing<MH369> but sadness<MH7455> of heart<MH3820>.&#8221; Then I was<MH3372a> very<MH3966> much<MH7235a> afraid<MH3372a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And I said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;May the king<MH4428> live<MH2421a> forever<MH5769>. Why<MH4069> should my face<MH6440> not be<MH7489a> sad<MH7489a> when<MH834> the city<MH5892b>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>site<MH1004> of my fathers&#8217;<MH1> tombs<MH6913>, is desolate<MH2720b> and its gates<MH8179> have been consumed<MH398> by fire<MH784>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to me, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>What<MH4100> would you request<MH1245>?&#8221; So I prayed<MH6419> to the God<MH430> of heaven<MH8064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then I said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;If<MH518> it pleases<MH2895> the king<MH4428>, and if<MH518> your servant<MH5650> has found<MH3190> favor<MH3190> before<MH6440> you, <i>I request</i> that you send<MH7971> me to Judah<MH3063>, to the city<MH5892b> of my fathers&#8217;<MH1> tombs<MH6913>, that I may rebuild<MH1129> it.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to me, with the queen<MH7694> sitting<MH3427> beside<MH681a> him, &#8220;How<MH4970> long<MH5704, 4970> will your journey<MH4109> be, and when<MH4970> will you return<MH7725>?&#8221; So it pleased<MH3190> the king<MH4428> to send<MH7971> me, and I gave<MH5414> him a definite<MH2165> time<MH2165>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And I said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;If<MH518> it pleases<MH2895> the king<MH4428>, let letters<MH107> be given<MH5414> me for the governors<MH6346> <i>of the provinces</i> beyond<MH5676> the River<MH5104>, so that they will allow me to pass<MH5674a> through<MH5674a> until<MH5704, 834> I come<MH935> to Judah<MH3063>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and a letter<MH107> to Asaph<MH623> the keeper<MH8104> of the king&#8217;s<MH4428> forest<MH6508>, so<MH834> that<MH834> he will give<MH5414> me timber<MH6086> to make<MH7136b> beams<MH7136b> for the gates<MH8179> of the citadel<MH1002> which<MH834> is by the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>temple<MH1004>, for the wall<MH2346> of the city<MH5892b>, and for the house<MH1004> to which<MH834> I will go<MH935>.&#8221; And the king<MH4428> granted<MH5414> <i>them</i> to me because the good<MH2896a> hand<MH3027> of my God<MH430> <i>was</i> on me. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then I came<MH935> to the governors<MH6346> <i>of the provinces</i> beyond<MH5676> the <i>Euphrates</i> River<MH5104> and gave<MH5414> them the king&#8217;s<MH4428> letters<MH107>. Now the king<MH4428> had sent<MH7971> with me officers<MH8269> of the army<MH2428> and horsemen<MH6571b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And when Sanballat<MH5571> the Horonite<MH2772> and Tobiah<MH2900> the Ammonite<MH5984> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>official<MH5650> heard<MH8085> <i>about it,</i> it was very<MH7463a, 1419> displeasing<MH7489a> to them that someone<MH120> had come<MH935> to seek<MH1245> the welfare<MH2899b> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="hdg">Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem&#8217;s Walls</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So I came<MH935> to Jerusalem<MH3389> and was there<MH8033> for three<MH7969> days<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And I got<MH6965> up<MH6965> in the night<MH3915>, I and a few<MH4592> men<MH376> with me. I did not tell<MH5046> anyone<MH120> what<MH4100> my God<MH430> was putting<MH5414> into my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>mind<MH3820> to do<MH6213a> for Jerusalem<MH3389>, and there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> animal<MH929> with me except<MH3588, 518> the animal<MH929> on which<MH834> I was riding<MH7392>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So I went<MH3318> out<MH3318> at night<MH3915> by the Valley<MH1516> Gate<MH8179> in the direction<MH6440> of the Dragon&#8217;s<MH5886> Spring<MH5886> and <i>on</i> to the Dung<MH830> Gate<MH8179>, and I was inspecting<MH7663a> the walls<MH2346> of Jerusalem<MH3389> which<MH834> were broken<MH6555> down<MH6555> and its gates<MH8179> which had been consumed<MH398> by fire<MH784>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then I passed<MH5674a> on<MH5674a> to the Fountain<MH5871a> Gate<MH8179> and the King&#8217;s<MH4428> Pool<MH1295>, but there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> place<MH4725> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>my mount<MH929> to pass<MH5674a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So I was going<MH5927> up<MH5927> at night<MH3915> by the ravine<MH5158a> and inspecting<MH7663a> the wall<MH2346>. Then I entered<MH935> the Valley<MH1516> Gate<MH8179> again and returned<MH7725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>However, the officials<MH5461> did not know<MH3045> where<MH575> I had gone<MH1980> or what<MH4100> I was doing<MH6213a>; nor<MH3808> had I as yet<MH3651> told<MH5046> the Jews<MH3064>, the priests<MH3548>, the nobles<MH2715>, the officials<MH5461>, or the rest<MH3499a> who were doing<MH6213a> the work<MH4399>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then I said<MH559> to them, &#8220;You see<MH7200> the bad<MH7463a> situation<MH7463a> we are in, that Jerusalem<MH3389> is desolate<MH2720b> and its gates<MH8179> have been burned<MH3341> by fire<MH784>. Come<MH1980>, let&#8217;s rebuild<MH1129> the wall<MH2346> of Jerusalem<MH3389> so that we will no<MH3808> longer<MH5750> be a disgrace<MH2781>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And I told<MH5046> them how<MH834> the hand<MH3027> of my God<MH430> had been favorable<MH2896a> to me and also<MH637> about the king&#8217;s<MH4428> words<MH1697> which<MH834> he had spoken<MH559> to me. Then they said<MH559>, &#8220;Let&#8217;s arise<MH6965> and build<MH1129>.&#8221; So they put<MH2388> their hands<MH3027> to the good<MH2899b> <i>work.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>But when Sanballat<MH5571> the Horonite<MH2772> and Tobiah<MH2900> the Ammonite<MH5984> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>official<MH5650>, and Geshem<MH1654> the Arab<MH6163a> heard<MH8085> <i>about it,</i> they mocked<MH3932> us and despised<MH959> us, and said<MH559>, &#8220;What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> that you are doing<MH6213a>?
