This moment underscores the divine orchestration of events, as the disciples arrive just as the conversation concludes, allowing the woman to leave and spread the news about Jesus. The return of the disciples also marks a transition from a private dialogue to a more public revelation of Jesus' mission.
and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman.
In the cultural context of first-century Judea, it was unusual for a Jewish man, especially a rabbi, to engage in conversation with a woman in public. This surprise is heightened by the fact that the woman is a Samaritan, a group generally despised by Jews due to historical and religious animosities. The disciples' reaction highlights the radical nature of Jesus' ministry, which often broke social norms to reach marginalized individuals.
But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?”
The disciples' silence may indicate their respect for Jesus' authority and wisdom, even when His actions defy their expectations. It also suggests an internal struggle to understand His unconventional approach. This phrase reflects the disciples' growing awareness that Jesus' mission transcends traditional boundaries and expectations.
or “Why are You talking with her?”
This question underscores the cultural and religious barriers that Jesus is breaking. By speaking with the Samaritan woman, Jesus demonstrates His mission to seek and save the lost, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or social status. This action foreshadows the Great Commission, where Jesus commands His followers to make disciples of all nations, emphasizing the inclusivity of the Gospel.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus
- The central figure of the New Testament, the Son of God, who is engaging in a conversation with a Samaritan woman, breaking cultural norms.

2. Disciples
- Followers of Jesus who return to find Him speaking with the Samaritan woman, which surprises them due to cultural and social norms of the time.

3. Samaritan Woman
- A woman from Samaria who encounters Jesus at Jacob's well. They would like to ask Him, as He asked some of them (<a href="/john/1-38.htm" title="Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, What seek you? Such a proceeding was contrary to the etiquette of a rabbi, who contended that "a man should not salute a woman in a public place, not even his own wife" (cf. Lightfoot, Edersheim, Wettstein). One of the daily thanksgivings was, "Blessed art thou, O Lord... who hast not made me a woman" (Westcott). Yet (adds the eyewitness, one intimately acquainted with the innermost sentiments of the disciples) no one said, What seekest thou? One of the miracles of the Lord's ministry was to break down the wretched rabbinical prejudice against the spiritual capacities of woman, and the Oriental folly which supposed that she contaminated their sanctity. He lifted woman to her true position by the side of man. Women were his most faithful disciples. They ministered unto him of their substance. They shared his miraculous healing, feeding, and teaching. They anointed his feet, they wept over his agony, they followed him to the cross, they were early at the sepulchre. They greeted him as the risen Lord. They received the baptism of the Spirit. In Christ there is neither male nor female.
