How about the tidy profit that the family of the late Leon Hess turned with the sale of the Jets to Robert Wood Johnson IV yesterday?</p><p>The sale marks the end of an era. The Hess family has owned part of the Jets since 1963, when Leon and four partners bought the New York Titans out of bankruptcy.</p><p>Spending only for the assets, Hess, Sonny Werblin, Phil Iselin, Townsend B. Martin and Donald Lillis put up a total of $1 million for an American Football League team that still played its home games in the Polo Grounds. They changed the name to Jets and in six seasons, a brash young quarterback named Joe Namath led the team to perhaps the greatest Super Bowl victory ever. Pro football would never be the same. Yesterday's $635,000,000 price tag represents 2,704 times what Leon originally put in.</p><p>Hess became the club's majority stockholder in 1973 and bought out Iselin's share after his death in 1977. By 1984, Hess became the sole owner of the club after purchasing the last quarter-share from Helen Dillon, Lillis' daughter.</p><p>That season, deploring the condition of the bathrooms at Shea Stadium, which he called "the NFL's poorest facility for athletes and spectators alike," he moved the team's home games across the Hudson to Giants Stadium.</p><p>Throughout his ownership, the self-made oil magnate was a driving force in the league. His public profile was as low as it gets but when he made statements, they stuck.</p><p>On one of his annual Thanksgiving visits with the players, he urged them to fight through the rest of an already-lost season, "to go out with some dignity and to show them you're not a bunch of horses' asses."</p><p>When he made the mistake of hiring head coach Rich Kotite in 1995, he announced, "I'm 80 years old. I want results now."</p><p>He finally got them with Bill Parcells. But in the last season before his death, the Jets finished one game short of a return to the Super Bowl.</p><p>The lasting images of Hess are of him blowing kisses to fans from the owner's box in the closing minutes of the Jets' playoff win over the Jaguars and, though frail, emotionally greeting the team at the airport upon their return from the AFC Championship loss in Denver.</p><p>He died less than five months later.</p><p></p><p>Graphic:</p><p>THE HESS YEARS</p><p>In 1963, Leon Hess paid $250,000 for a one-quarter share of the New York Titans.
