It organises inspiring activities focusing on interdisciplinarity, science policy, and the interface between science and society. Although facilitated by the Academy, the Young Academy operates independently. </p> <h2 class=" ">Society of Arts</h2> <p>The Royal Academy founded the <a title="" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20190324052033/https://knaw.nl/en/about-us/society-of-arts/avk" class="internal-link" target="_self">Society of Arts</a> in 2014. The Society will give artists a place to share ideas with professionals in science and other artistic disciplines. It will also offer them a forum for discussing the role of art in society and the relationship between art and science.</p> <h2>Board of Management</h2> <p>The <a title="" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20190324052033/https://knaw.nl/en/topnavigatie/contact/employees/14774" class="internal-link" target="_self">director general</a> has overall responsibility for day-to-day management of the Academy. </p> <h2>Staff Department</h2> <p>The Staff Department assists the director general. <span>The </span><a title="" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20190324052033/https://knaw.nl/en/about-us/organisation/overzicht" class="internal-link" target="_self">Academy Bureau</a><span> has a staff of approximately 130.</span></p> <p>These employees: </p> <ul> <li>support the Academy Board and Board of Management in their policy-making and policy implementation work</li> <li>support the learned society</li> <li>help the research institutes with such matters as finances, human resources, IT and communication</li> <li>prepare advisory reports and assist the advisory councils and committees</li> <li>develop and implement the Academy’s communication policy</li> <li>assist the Academy’s juries and panels and organise award ceremonies</li> <li>manage the Trippenhuis Building (a listed building) and the premises of the various research institutes.</li> </ul> <h2>Institutes</h2> <p>The Academy is responsible for fourteen <a title="" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20190324052033/https://knaw.nl/en/institutes" class="internal-link" target="_self">research institutes </a>that together employ about 1,300 staff. The institutes are active in the humanities, the social sciences and the life sciences. The institutes investigate a wide variety of subjects, ranging from the history of the Second World War to stem cells, from the phenomenon of sleep to the Frisian language, and from the Great Tit population to medieval manuscripts. The Academy institutes play a leading role in Dutch research. They serve as national centres of expertise, manage unique infrastructures, and provide access to world-famous collections.</p> <h4 class=" ">Rathenau Institute</h4> <p>For administrative purposes, the <a class="external-link" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20190324052033/https://www.rathenau.nl/en" target="_blank" title=""><span class="internal-link">Rathenau Institute</span></a> reports to the Academy. The institute is self-governing.
