natural language processing is leading to an explosive demand for power, and the utilities industry is stepping up to the challenge. Four experts shared AI use cases shaping the industry at the SAP for Energy and Utilities Conference in Sevilla, Spain, on a panel hosted by Klaus Schimmer, chief innovation architect for sustainability at SAP.</p> <h6>It’s a digital world</h6> <p>Leonardo Moreno, CEO of Solarpack, the world’s most sustainable utility according to Sustainalytics ESG Risk Rating, related the “aha” moment of a CIO of a company that only made lipstick. Until recently, that CIO professed lipstick would never be digital, but it turns out he was wrong. Everything about producing lipstick – from consumer data and how people feel about the product to how colors and aromas are developed, procurement of materials and distribution – is all digitalized now.</p> <p>As the head of a utility that is the number one seller of clean energy to corporations such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, Moreno highlights the connection between renewable power and the digital transformation. Currently, about 3% of the global energy is used by data centers, but cloud businesses are growing 50% to 100% per year. In 10 years, this will be 1,000 times more. “Power represents 80% of data center costs. The development of renewables must be on a massive, massive scale to meet commitments,” said Moreno.</p> <h6>The need for infrastructure</h6> <p>Ralf Werner, CIO and chief data officer (CDO) of OGE, Germany’s biggest infrastructure provider for natural gas, shared how AI is addressing key challenges caused by demographics, decarbonization, decentralization, and digitalization.</p> <p>“Germany doesn’t have the necessary infrastructure for hydrogen, but we do have 1.6 million documents, some handwritten, about the construction of gas pipelines over the past 100 years,” he explained. “You can’t process all that documentation manually, so we trained AI models to extract key information on pipeline elements and identify which could be reused for hydrogen infrastructure.”</p> <p>OGE learned that nearly 90% of its current infrastructure could be repurposed in some form for hydrogen, which will be much cheaper and faster than building completely new structures, speeding up the company’s goal to decarbonize its business.</p> <p>OGE is training an AI model using computer vision and process data to detect anomalies along pipelines and flag issues for inspection using drones or helicopters. It created a “hydrogen brain” tool to optimize hydrogen production and consumption using AI, which is integrated with the SAP Green Token solution, a chain of custody solution to track co-mingled materials. OGE also runs regular “promptathons” to involve employees in developing AI solutions.</p> <h6>Involving consumers</h6> <p>Mohamed Obaid Alsharid discussed the digital transformation journey of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). Alsharid, the company’s CDO, emphasized the importance of upskilling human capital, implementing data management practices, and establishing a strong cybersecurity foundation. He highlighted how DEWA is leveraging AI to improve customer experience through personalized insights and optimizing energy and water consumption.</p> <p>“We wanted customers to be more aware of their water and appliance-level electricity consumption, so we implemented a program running on an AI model that allows you to compare your consumption with other similar homes in your areas through a dashboard,” he explained. “We also conducted a pilot program with 100 DEWA employee accounts to test the project. Afterall, employees are customers as well.”</p> <p>Felipe Requejo Siguenza, director general of Nortegas, the second largest gas distribution company in Spain with over 8,100 kilometers of pipeline, listed a number of areas where AI is delivering value to the company.</p> <p>“AI plays a role in most asset management tasks such as finding potential locations for renewable assets, designing the layout of assets in wind and solar parks, and simulating and optimizing plant performance through digital twins,” said Siguenza. “We’re also using AI to drive efficiency improvements through predictive maintenance and the automation of back-office tasks, and we use it in training exercises and the detection of health and safety hazards.”</p> <p>These are just a few examples of how Nortegas, DEWA, OGE, and Solarpack are harnessing the power of AI to unlock new possibilities. “With their innovative use of technology, these companies are leading the way toward efficiency and sustainability in the utilities industry.
