it at a 2 ½-star rating. :/<br><br>this is a very philosophical novel, and it had a lot of potential. in the end, though, it felt heavy-handed and not very elegant in its delivery. i found this review from <i>the guardian</i> (2007), which seems to reflect many of the same things i was thinking about and feeling while reading <u class="showmore_hide">the novel. After a promising start in the debut <i>Captain Alatriste</i> novel, for which I still held some reservations, I had been somewhat disappointed by the second and third books. The series has been peppered with fine moments, particularly in action scenes and the melancholy of after-battle, and has an underpinning <u class="showmore_hide">of quality in prose and character intelligence, but it has also been somewhat underwhelming, each novel starting slowly and never quite fulfilling the promise they evidently hold.<br><br>However, by the end of <i>The King's Gold</i>, I am more of a mind to continue. I realise that doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement, but this fourth novel is the most fun Alatriste adventure since that debut. There is subterfuge and swordfights in moonlit Spanish gardens and aboard galleons. It returns to what made that first novel fun, and as I read over my previous reviews I find I can copy and paste the entirety of my review of <i>Captain Alatriste</i> to this fourth novel. The judgement would be the same: it's a standard Dumas-like adventure, with solid literary flourishes and a sometimes-overdone historical commentary on Spanish imperial decline and decadence.<br><br>One might be disappointed that it doesn't transcend its hard-baked formula – and, in the fourth book, one might rue the lack of ambition in returning safely to the template of the first – but, in such a return to the series' original charm, <i>The King's Gold</i> might be said to be a return to form. It can be slow in places, and I still find Íñigo's adoration of Angélica de Alquézar inexplicable, but the book also provides enough moments of quality to win over a casual, uncommitted reader like myself. The final action set-piece, with Alatriste and his mercenaries stealing over the side of a treasure galleon to engage in piracy and swordplay, is thrilling and well-written. He tells of an adventure that happens in 1623 when Diego Alatriste, sword for hire, is commissioned by 2 conflicting patrons to attack 2 English travelers coming to Madrid in disguise; one wanting a robbery of documents they carry, harassment but little personal damage; the other wanting their death. The ambush does <u class="showmore_hide">not goes as intended with Alatriste backing off when he questions the agenda for these travelers. This sets up political, religious, and personal problems for Alatriste and a lot of delicate verbal footwork and swordplay to keep him from being killed himself. Very intriguing look at Spain in the reign of Philip IV just after the defeat of the Armada and being at odds and/or battle with England, France and Holland.
