the first therefore that went in after the disturbing of the water, was cured of whatever malady he laboured under. <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And there was a man who had been under illness thirty eight years. <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Jesus seeing him lie <i>there,</i> and knowing that he had been now a long time <i>ill,</i> saith unto him, <FR>Dost thou desire to be cured?<Fr> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The infirm <i>man</i> answered Him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is moved, to put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another goes down before me. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Jesus saith unto him, <FR>Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.<Fr> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And immediately the man was cured: and he took up his bed and walked. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now this was the sabbath-day, therefore the Jews said to him that was cured, It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for thee to carry <i>thy</i> bed. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>He answered them, He, that made me well, said unto me, <FR>Take up thy bed and walk.<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Therefore they asked him, Who is the man that said to thee, <FR>Take up thy bed and walk?<Fr> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>but he, that was healed, did not know who it was: for Jesus had withdrawn himself, there being many people in the place. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Afterwards Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, <FR>Behold, thou art healed; sin no more, least something worse befal thee.<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span><i>And</i> the man went away, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had healed him.<p> <A name="17"></a><p class="hdg">The Father and the Son<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And for this did the Jews persecute Jesus, and endeavoured to put Him to death; because He had done these <i>things</i> on the sabbath-<i>day.</i> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But Jesus answered them, <FR>My Father worketh without intermission, and <Fr><i>so</i><FR> do I.<Fr><p> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>For this therefore the Jews sought the more to kill Him, because He had not only broken the sabbath, but had also called God his own Father, making Himself equal with God.<p> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, <FR>Verily, verily I say unto you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for whatsoever He doth, these also the Son doth in like manner.<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span><FR>For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth Him all <Fr><i>things,</i><FR> which He Himself doth: and He will shew Him greater than these, that ye may wonder.<Fr> <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span><FR>For as the Father raiseth up the dead and giveth life: even so the Son maketh alive whom He pleaseth.<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span><FR>For neither doth the Father judge any one, but hath committed all judgement to the Son;<Fr> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span><FR>that all <Fr><i>men</i><FR> may honour the Son, <Fr><i>even</i><FR> as they honour the Father: he, that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father that sent Him.<Fr><p> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><FR>Verily, verily I say unto you, he, that heareth my word, and believeth <Fr><i>in</i><FR> Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come under condemnation; but is passed from death to life.<Fr><p> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>Verily, verily I tell you, that the time is coming, and <Fr><i>even</i><FR> now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>For as the Father hath life in Himself, so hath He given also to the Son to have life in Himself.<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>And hath given Him authority also to execute judgement, because He is the Son of man.<Fr> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>Wonder not at this; for the time is coming, in which all <Fr><i>that are</i><FR> in the graves shall hear his voice,<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><FR>and shall come forth, they that have done good to the resurrection of life, and they that have done evil to the resurrection of damnation.<Fr><p> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>I can do nothing of my self: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father that hath sent me.<Fr><p> <A name="32"></a><p class="hdg">Testimonies about Jesus<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>If I <Fr><i>alone</i><FR> bear witness of my self, my testimony is not true <Fr><i>in law:</i> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><i>but</i><FR> there is another who testifieth concerning me; and I know that the testimony, which he giveth concerning me, is true.<Fr><p> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><FR>Ye <Fr><i>your selves</i><FR> sent unto John, and he bore witness to the truth:<Fr> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span><FR>though I need not testimony from man; but I say these <Fr><i>things</i><FR> that ye may be saved.<Fr> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span><FR>He was <Fr><i>indeed</i><FR> a burning and shining light, and for a while ye willingly rejoiced in his light.<Fr><p> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span><FR>But I have a testimony greater than John's: for the works which the Father hath given me to perform, the very works which I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.<Fr><p> <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span><FR>And the Father who sent me, hath Himself borne witness of me: and <Fr><i>yet</i><FR> ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.<Fr> <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span><FR>And ye have not his word abiding in you;
