Therefore, this study aims to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on agroforestry farmers' livelihoods in rural areas. It was carried out in Tasikmalaya Regency, East Priangan, where mixed garden agroforestry farming supports part of the economic life of the community. The data used were collected between August and September 2021 by interviewing 33 farmer households. A coding and descriptive analysis were carried out to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on agroforestry farmers and their strategies. Subsequently, the cost-income, revenue cost ratio, and labor productivity analyses were used to assess the feasibility of agroforestry farming before and during the pandemic. The results showed that government policies related to handling the pandemic in form of Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) and the Implementation of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) significantly affected the lives of farmers. These include decreased demand and commodity selling prices, difficulties in marketing agroforestry products, and a decrease in farmers' incomes by 38.45%. The agroforestry business has become less viable due to a reduction in farm productivity from R/C 1.1 before the pandemic to 0.85 during the pandemic, while farmer labor productivity decreased from US$ 3.00 to US$ 2.10. The farmers used direct cash assistance from the government and processed agroforestry products for sale and consumption as a survival strategy during the pandemic. During the early stages of this pandemic, governments across the world established and implemented different measures to ideally control the spread of the disease and among these measures included lockdown, curfew, social distancing among others which all these inevitably interfered with the normal running of the agricultural value chains in different localities. Within this context, this study was aimed at assessing the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on agricultural production in Gulu district, Northern Uganda. The study employed a community-based descriptive cross-sectional survey that used a well-structured questionnaire to collect both the study data. A random purposive multistage sampling technique was employed to select 120 farmers from the two sub counties of Paicho and Awach for this study. The data collected was mainly analyzed using descriptive statistical measures of mean, frequency, and standard deviation and was well represented with tables, bar, and pie charts. Almost 60% of the respondents were males, 85% were married and the mean age was 35years. The results of the analysis revealed that 82% of the farmers were faced with a challenge of low market prices, more than three quarters were faced with a challenge of transporting their produce to the market centers, and only 21% were faced with a shortage of labor. This study further established that beans, maize, and groundnuts were the crop enterprises adopted by majority of the farmers during the COVID-19 period at percentages of 27%, 22% and 22% respectively and that the most adopted animal enterprises were poultry and goats at proportions of 40% and 30% respectively. For almost all the crop enterprises adopted, less than 1 ton was harvested on average on an average acreage of 6 acres. For instance, just 973kgs of maize were produced on average. Low unit prices were realized for the different crops for instance the average unit prices for maize and beans were ugx 617.6shs and ugx 808.0shs respectively. Similarly, lower numbers of animals were produced and sold, and the animal unit prices were also visibly low for instance, the average unit price of cattle was ugx 750,000shs. With clear challenges of low agricultural produce prices during the COVID-19 pandemic, the government and its partners should enact policies that assist farmers to adapt to price fluctuations like through enhanced storage systems and contract farming. Because of the ever-increasing degree of globalisation, supply chains frequently cross international borders. In the short term, countries have mostly focused on keeping supply networks intact and operational so that panic buying can be reduced and variations in consumption habits resulting from personal isolation may be handled. After the crisis has passed, the government may desire to improve international trade institutions based on what has been learnt about the resilience of the international food system. Governments, on the other hand, may feel overly reliant on foreign sources of supply as a result of their COVID19 experience, and may desire to counteract the effects of globalisation on national food systems. As a result, they may become more isolationist and less interested in international cooperation. Which of these conflicting forces will triumph may be determined by the course economies take following the pandemic's instability. This research report examines the implications of covid 19 on the agricultural industry. The government has proposed a scheme to help farmers cope with pandemic-related losses. The economy of the country was deflated, and the country suffered a large loss. Because agriculture is so important to the economy, government decision-making in this area is critical and important. Agriculture and its related services are the major source of livelihood of this population. In the past few decades agriculture sector was reduced and it became a hidden unemployment of farmers and its dependent workers. The price hike in agriculture equipments, pesticides and other essential things, low price of crops, cost of living of villagers are some major problems of farmers. The income of farmers and working labours is unorganized and with very slow growth rate. The cultivation of crops and income of workers depend on seasonal regimes and natural disasters. There are many examples of natural disasters and various types of pandemics had destructed the life of these workers in last decades. All these problems caused migration of workers from rural areas to urban centers in search of better employment. This increases the load of unorganized workers or population in cities. Recently Covid-19 pandemic affected the life of each and every person in most of the part of globe. It was very severely affected the life of unorganized labour in urban areas and caused a large scale migration of workers from urban to rural areas. This migration increased the population load and unemployment in rural areas. The responsive measures of government to combat global pandemic resulted in various travel restrictions and temporary lockdown of markets. The travel restricts created disturbances in supply chain due to which there are unnecessary wastages of supplies and increasing stocks at warehouses. Several business sectors faced huge losses and closed down their organizations. The agriculture sector faced limited restrictions due to the approval of government for agriculture sector as essential and exemption from any travel movement. There are huge cereal stocks and production stocks but we can say that COVID impacts are limited on agriculture sector as compared other sectors of the economy.
