Richard Sheridan is a local colorful of Dallas known for disrupting (or frequently speaking before) the Dallas City Council proceedings, making broad accusations of electronic vote fraud and claiming that a county commissioner “<i>serves Satan</i>.” Indeed, in 2015 Sheridan even ran for Mayor of Dallas and received an impressive 28 votes. Not entirely pleased with the results, Sheridan’s used his concession speech – on a voicemail left for local reporter Dan Koller – <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/richard-sheridan-voicemail_n_3281786">to declare how</a> “<i>extremely happy</i>” he was that “<i>Sodomite</i>” Leland Burk lost to Jennifer Staubach Gates; Sheridan was apparently displeased that reporters hadn’t focused sufficiently intensely on Leland Burk being gay, whereas Sheridan himself “<i>think I did a pretty good job of communicating to voters</i>.” Then he proceeded to tell Koller, the reporter, that “<i>you, sir, are cunt, bitch, coward, Mr. Koller. Dan Koller is a cunt, bitch, coward. And I don’t think you have one testicle, sir. You’re a sorry-ass, you’re a disgrace to our city, you’re a propagandist to the Sodomites […] And when I see you, I’m not sure what I’m going to do, but minimally your eardrums will hurt, you motherfucker. Because the word fuck means abuse and if you’re in the gay lifestyle, the mothers that bring their children up in the world, wanting to do good, want to live a good life, and you go with the Sodomites? You motherfucker, cunt, coward Dan Koller</i>.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">In 2016 he <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/news/dallas-city-hall/2016/02/25/richard-sheridan-pleads-guilty-to-666-graffiti-targeting-gay-community">pled no contest</a> to incidents of spray-painting “666” graffiti targeting the gay community. Sheridan called the spray-painting “<i>an act of love</i>” and <a href="https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Former-Council-Candidate-Questioned-in-666-Tags-271178751.html">claimed that</a> the “<i>rabid</i>” gay community was persecuting him over the incidents in a bloodthirsty quest for vengeance: “<i>this is what will happen to anyone who dares to call out the immorality of the Gay lifestyle, to reference the Bible in saying that the Gay community is violating Gods laws</i>,” Sheridan lamented.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">In 2013 Sheridan ran for the District 13 seat on the Dallas City Council, <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Richard_P._Sheridan">gaining some attention</a> for <a href="http://cityhallblog.dallasnews.com/2013/05/anti-gay-flier-spurs-dallas-council-to-re-consider-open-microphone-rules.html/">handing out posters</a> at a council meeting that showed pictures of three openly gay candidates covered with an X, and later stating that “<i>God’s voice was heard in Dallas Saturday. According to her ads, Sheldon “<i>is an <a href="http://skepdic.com/intuitive.html">intuitive</a></i><i> <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Healing">healer</a></i><i> and <a href="http://skepdic.com/medium.html">medium</a></i><i> that’s conducted over 10,000 private consultations [“30,000” by 2019]</i>.” Based on her experiences, she has “<i>handpicked her most powerful and transformational <a href="http://skepdic.com/energy.html">energy</a></i><i> tools to create her Love or Above Spiritual Toolkit, a source to help others become a ‘magnet’ for love, joy and abundance.</i>” To access the toolkit, you apparently need to access her website Love or Above, where you’d be forced to confront the profound question “ARE YOUR <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Vibration#Woo">VIBRATIONS</a> HELPING OR HURTING YOU?” Yes, it is an instance of <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Just_asking_questions#Betteridge.27s_law_of_headlines">Betteridge’s law of headlines</a>, and the answer is “no”; according to Sheldon, however, “<i>[y]our personal vibration frequency could be the ONE thing holding you back from abundance, happiness and success. Apparently the reason they succeed has nothing to do with opportunities, resources, savviness or skills. It is because of how they vibrate. All emotions, says Sheldon, vibrate at a particular frequency – shame, for instance, vibrates at a frequency of 20. She doesn’t provide any units. We’re talking <i>that kind of frequency </i>and <i>that kind of webpage</i>. More positive emotions, though, vibrate at, well, <i>more</i>. Willingness and acceptance are 310 and 350, respectively, and if you vibrate at 1000, you are an “<i>Enlightened Master</i>.” According to her measurements, the vibrational energy of the Earth is currently 207, somewhere between “<i>Courage</i>” and “<i>Neutrality</i>.” <o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">To back up her claims, she cites <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_G._Braud">William Braud</a> of the “<i>Mind-Science Foundation</i>”, who “<i>found</i>” that the life spans of red blood cells could be increased by having their owners “<i>think positive thoughts about them</i>”, and “Dr.” <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Masaru_Emoto">Masaru Emoto</a>, no less. Sheets is critical of the current state of American churches, <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/dominionists-in-search-of-warriors-more-from-frc-cindy-jacobs-2012-kickoff-rally/">claiming that</a> they spend too much time and effort on values, creating communities and supporting families, and too little time on the church as a legislative body – as God’s government on Earth. Sheets blames Satan for the current situation, but also King James, who ostensibly used trickery to downplay the church’s dominion over the government and legislation – “<i>kind of like our government that is trying to sell us separation of church and state</i>,” says Sheets. Accordingly, Sheets sees it as part of his role to “<i>raise up an army</i>” willing to <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Spiritual_warfare">make a real effort</a> to help the church’s in their attempt “<i>to take over everything and rule the earth completely for the Lord</i>,” while mocking those “<i>little sheepies</i>” focusing on the caring and pastoral work of the church. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">And according to Sheets’s own “prophetic visions”, Jesus has called upon Christians <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2015/01/09/prophet-jesus-wants-us-to-take-over-the-government/">to take over government</a>: “<i>Through my recent re-commissioning […] and other prophetic revelation, the Lord has confirmed to me that the door to the governmental arena – and to Washington DC, specifically – is again wide open</i>.” For the 2012 election, Sheets accordingly <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2012/01/31/another-wingnut-endorses-newt/">expressed his support for</a> Christian model and moral beacon <a href="http://americanloons.blogspot.com/2013/09/705-newt-gingrich.html">Newt Gingrich</a>. Before the 2018 midterms, <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/dominionist-dutch-sheets-gop-gains-in-senate-will-continue-shifting-of-supreme-court/">Sheets reported that</a> God told him to “<i>war for this nation</i>” and <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/dutch-sheets-prays-for-midterms-calls-christians-to-war-says-u-s-meant-to-be-worlds-strongest-voice-for-the-gospel/">declared that</a> “<i>the kingdom of God is invading the United States of America</i>.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Sheets is also a firm believer in the powers of prayers. For instance, as Sheets sees things, his and NAR figure <a href="http://americanloons.blogspot.com/2014/05/1030-chuck-pierce.html">Chuck Pierce</a>’s prayers during a tour of the country <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/random-book-blogging-how-chuck-pierce-helped-capture-saddam-hussein/">led to the capture of Saddam Hussein</a>. Moreover, Sheets’s prayers have apparently <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/supreme-court-vacancies-resulted-from-his-decree-claims-dutch-sheets/">been a primary cause</a> of various Supreme Court vacancies. “<i>God had assigned me to pray for the Supreme Court</i>” and told Sheets that “<i>the greatest stronghold of the enemy ruling our nation was in the Supreme Court</i>” for “<i>there is no gate that has allowed more evil to enter our nation than the Supreme Court</i>.” Meanwhile Democrats opposed Kavanaugh <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/right-wing-bonus-tracks-a-30-foot-tall-demon-opposes-kavanaugh/">because</a> “<i>they hate President Trump because he is helping turn around the Antichrist agenda they love</i>.” At present, <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/dutch-sheets-to-god-give-us-more-supreme-court-vacancies-for-trump-to-fill/">Sheets is praying for</a> God to kill more Supreme Court judges so that Trump can fill the vacancies.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Like most other NPR prophets, Sheets’s main strategy to achieve his political goals is, as suggested, prayers, including <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2017/01/18/wingnuts-hey-lets-try-100-days-prayer-time/">holding prayer rallies</a> and <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/dominionist-dutch-sheets-vote-biblical-values-to-see-gods-plan-for-courts-america-restored/">arranging conferences</a> to “<i>save America</i>”, with names like the <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2016/09/29/hey-look-theyre-gonna-pray-again/">“Appeal to Heaven Conference”</a> (<a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/right-wing-bonus-tracks-92716/">because</a> “<i>America’s narcissistic independence from her Creator has left us spiritually and morally bankrupt</i>”).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Sheets also has called President Obama a “<i>Muslim president</i>” and said his election is bringing the judgment of God, and that “<i>God has now turned us over to our enemies for a season</i>”. Prior to the 2012 election, he proclaimed that the “<i>systems of anti-Christ</i>” that have bound the nation would be broken – he was accordingly disappointed with what actually happened, and <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/sheets-judgment-is-coming-because-god-has-put-up-with-all-of-the-mocking-he-intends-to-from-barack-obama/">promptly declared that</a> God’s wholesale judgment was about to rain down on this nation because “<i>God has put up with all of the mocking He intends to from Barack Obama</i>”. (As for the <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2015/07/05/prophet-dutch-sheets-on-the-marriage-ruling/">“mocking”</a>: “<i>who could ever forget the mocking spirit demonstrated by our president when he decorated the White House with rainbow colors</i>”). The election of Trump in 2016, meanwhile, <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/prophets-looking-to-profit-from-the-divine-mercy-of-trumps-election/">was a miracle and a sign of God’s mercy</a>, and Sheets <a href="https://freethoughtblogs.com/affinity/2018/03/03/angel-armies-vs-deep-state-or-something/">has a warning for those</a> who – <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2017/05/05/sheets-satan-sending-evil-spirits-trump/">due to the influence of evil spirits</a>, of course – resist Trump: “<i>You will fail! … The Ekklesia will take you out. The outpouring of Holy Spirit will take you out. Angels will take you out</i>.” (Sheets’s rhetoric tends to be <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2018/03/06/prophets-meet-trump-hotel-fun-theocracy/">a bit violent</a> and bloodthirsty.) You see, Trump is apparently already chosen by God, <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2018/01/30/prophet-trump-will-encounter-god/">who is soon going to</a> give him <a href="https://freethoughtblogs.com/affinity/2018/01/27/trump-the-revelator/">visions like St. John of Patmos</a>, he of the Revelations; Sheets is “<i>confident</i>” that this will happen because a friend of his had a dream before the 2016 election in which she saw Trump sitting in a hotel room, weeping as he read the Bible. Dreams purportedly had by unnamed friends are <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2012/11/22/sheets-god-is-tired-of-obamas-crap/">apparently a major source of information on the state of the world for Sheets</a>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">America is facing divine punishment for other sins, too: for instance, God will beat up America for<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">the promotion of “<i>homosexuality, abortion and socialism</i>” and the “<i>toleration of immorality and perversion</i>” as well. No, Sheets was not happy with the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality, which <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2015/07/05/prophet-dutch-sheets-on-the-marriage-ruling/">he asserted</a> would result “<i>in the breakdown of families, along with the devastating effect this will have on children.</i>” (Exactly<i>how</i>allowing homosexuals to marry will lead to families breaking down is left a bit unclear, of course. Robert Sheaffer is a writer and skeptic who has written sharp and illuminating articles, e.g. for Skeptical Inquirer, about such topics as <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Unidentified_flying_object">UFOs</a> and <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Creationism">creationism</a>. But Sheaffer is also an example of the remarkable powers of compartmentalization – though good at identifying the fallacies, sloppy thinking and denialist gambits employed by creationists and various conspiracy theorists, he effortlessly, and ostensibly without noticing, falls into employing the same tricks himself when talking e.g. about global warming.</span><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">Sheaffer is a <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Global_warming#Denial_tactics">global warming denialist</a>, and has tried on an impressive number of global warming denialist <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Point_refuted_a_thousand_times">PRATTs</a>. Sheaffer has for instance suggested that global warming is due to the sun (<a href="https://skepticalscience.com/solar-activity-sunspots-global-warming.htm">it demonstrably isn’t</a>), that there has been no warming since 1998 (false, and it really doesn’t take much background knowledge to recognize <a href="https://skepticalscience.com/global-warming-stopped-in-1998.htm">the stupidity of that claim</a>), that we’re really heading into a new Little Ice Age (<a href="https://skepticalscience.com/heading-into-new-little-ice-age.htm">a stupid claim on many levels</a>), that the “hockey stick” is broken (<a href="https://skepticalscience.com/broken-hockey-stick.htm">false and irrelevant</a>), that the Medieval Warm Period was warmer than today (<a href="https://skepticalscience.com/medieval-warm-period.htm">most likely false, and also irrelevant</a>), that the IPCC was wrong about Himalayan glaciers (well, yes: there was, in fact, <a href="https://skepticalscience.com/IPCC-Himalayan-glacier-2035-prediction.htm">one minor error in a very long, technical document</a>), that Michael Mann performed a trick in Nature to “hide the decline” (<a href="https://skepticalscience.com/Mikes-Nature-trick-hide-the-decline.htm">false</a>, but a really good example of Sheaffer’s lack of understanding and his willingness to parrot nonsensical denialist talking points without bothering to try to understand them), and that the IPCC was wrong about Amazon rainforests (<a href="https://skepticalscience.com/IPCC-false-predictions-Amazon-rainforests.htm">they were not</a>; they did fail to properly refer to the studies that say precisely what the IPCC said about Amazon rainforests – <a href="http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2010/06/leakegate-a-retraction/">this</a> should be pretty illuminating).</span><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">So how, according to Sheaffer, did climate science go so wrong? Well, climate scientists must be lying about global warming to obtain research funding. Which makes sense: if you, as a student, don’t have scruples and want to get rich, go into weather and atmosphere research and make sure you stick to consensus (rather than the kinds of claims the oil companies, say, would have liked to hear): that’s where the money is! (<a href="https://skepticalinquirer.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2010/11/p60.pdf">hat-tip: R. Allen Gilliam</a>. Sheaffer is also a <a href="https://skepticalscience.com/global-warming-scientific-consensus.htm">consensus denialist</a>; after all, he is able to name two or three people with credentials that disagree with the mainstream view, so “<a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Global_warming#Claiming_there_is_no_consensus_in_respect_of_global_warming">it is disingenuous to speak of a ‘consensus’</a>”, which is exactly analogous to the claim the <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Discovery_Institute">Discovery Institute</a>’s Center for Science and Culture makes about the theory of evolution in biology. Also, “<i>given that unknown factors have caused previous climate changes, how can we be certain that these same unknown factors are not active today?</i>” Similarly, we suppose, for science <i>in general</i>: after all, scientific results are never certain and there is always the possibility that some hypothesis we haven’t thought about would explain the observed data better. </span><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">Sheaffer has also made numerous strange claims about feminism, an area he evidently knows nothing about.</span><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <b><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">Diagnosis: A striking example of how people who are apparently intelligent in one area can go on to violate even basic rules of critical thinking in another, especially one he knows little yet has <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Dunning-Kruger_effect">nonetheless formed strong opinions about</a>. One section, on “<i>rules of war</i>”, suggested that one should “<i>make an offer of peace before declaring war</i>”, but emphasized that the peace terms must involve that the enemy “<i>surrender on terms</i>” of no abortions, no same-sex marriage, no communism, and that they “<i>must obey Biblical law</i>”, before continuing: “<i>If they do not yield – kill all males</i>.” The manifesto also condemns “<i>communism</i>”, understood here apparently as <i>anything Shea disagrees with</i>, and urges the use of “<i>assassination and sabotage</i>” against (presumably whomever Shea perceives to be) “<i>tyrants</i>”. <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/414450-fbi-investigating-washington-state-rep-for-manifesto-urging-all-males">Shea claimed that</a> the document was a summary of “<i>biblical sermons on war</i>”, which really doesn’t explain what the purported explanation ought to have explained in order to count as an explanation. Shea volunteered to conduct background checks on residents of Spokane, naming in particular three individuals. In addition to Shea, the chat group included Jack Robertson, who broadcasts a far-right Radio Free Redoubt under the alias “John Jacob Schmidt” and Anthony Bosworth, <a href="https://www.inlander.com/Bloglander/archives/2016/09/12/rep-matt-shea-presents-oregon-standoff-figure-bosworth-with-2016-patriot-of-the-year-award">a violent maniac</a> who participated in the 2016 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupation_of_the_Malheur_National_Wildlife_Refuge">occupation of the Malheur national wildlife refuge</a>, <a href="https://www.inlander.com/spokane/false-start/Content?oid=2967467">reportedly as a “<i>security specialist</i>” appointed by Shea</a>; Shea subsequently awarded Bosworth <a href="https://www.inlander.com/Bloglander/archives/2016/09/12/rep-matt-shea-presents-oregon-standoff-figure-bosworth-with-2016-patriot-of-the-year-award">a Patriot of the Year award in 2016</a>. Indeed, Shea had himself travelled to <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Cliven_Bundy">the prior Cliven Bundy standoff in Nevada</a>, as a cheerleader, <a href="https://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/gop-state-rep-bundy-standoff-pitted-freedom-loving-americans-against-government-dependent-socialists/">commenting that</a> <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/False_dilemma">when it comes to the Bundy situation</a>, Americans are divided between “<i>patriots and loyalists</i>”: “<i>Are you a loyalist or are you a patriot? Are you a god-fearing, self-reliant, freedom-loving American, or are you a government-dependent, <a href="https://www.theonion.com/area-man-passionate-defender-of-what-he-imagines-consti-1819571149">Constitution-ignoring</a></i><i> socialist?</i>” Of course, given that Cliven Bundy thinks taxpayers should give him tens of thousands of dollars a year in free grazing rights on public land, one suspects <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2014/05/13/wingnut-doesnt-know-what-government-dependent-means/">Shea has an idiosyncratic definition of “government-dependent”</a>. Anyways, in response to the Guardian’s revelations, Shea attacked the author of the piece by tying him to “<i>violent Marxist revolutionaries</i>”, <a href="https://www.rawstory.com/2019/04/gop-lawmaker-quotes-anti-semitic-website-attack-journalist-exposed-ties-far-right-extremists/">using a an anti-semitic website as source</a>.</span><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">In August 2019 The Guardian <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/aug/13/matt-shea-biblical-war-washington-team-rugged">published a second set of emails</a> that tied Shea to Team Rugged, an organization aiming to train kids for “<i><a href="https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2019/aug/14/rep-matt-shea-endorsed-training-child-soldiers-for/">biblical warfare</a></i>”, including weapons training to prepare the warriors for the “<i>fight against one of the most barbaric enemies that are invading our country, Muslims terrorists [sic]</i>”. Of course, insofar as Shea’s goals for the US are aligned with the Christian Identity movement, then yeah: the SPLC is a threat and sort of ought to be. </span><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US">He is no fan of the media either, <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/washington-lawmaker-on-public-records-task-force-calls-journalists-those-dirty-godless-hateful-people/">referring to reporters as</a> “<i>dirty, godless, hateful people</i>” at an August 2018 gun-rights rally, and referring to the local newspapers Spokesman-Review and Inlander as the “<i><a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Red-baiting">Socialist-Review</a></i>” and “<i><a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/even-after-gov-inslees-veto-public-records-will-remain-an-issue-in-olympia/">Inslander</a></i>”, respectively. Other targets have included Walt Disney CO, <a href="https://www.crosswalk.com/11573071/">McDonalds</a>, <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/id/8047423/ns/business-us_business/t/another-swing-pocketbook/#.XOU1Fi16M_U">Ford</a> (the AFA claimed “success” in every case) and <a href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/afa-launches-planet-fitness-boycott-over-lgbt-inclusive-policy/">Planet Fitness</a>. Back in 2006, Sharp and the AFA <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2006/10/25/maybe-noebel-was-right/">encouraged</a> fans to register their dissatisfaction with Wal-Mart after Sharp had done some research on the Wal-Mart website only to discover that Wal-Mart actually sells books and videos that gay people might read (in particular, Wal-Mart was “<i>pushing an agenda</i>” by selling DVDs of “Brokeback Mountain”, which according to Sharp “<i>wasn’t even a blockbuster movie</i>”). To make things even worse, Wal-Mart was considering same-sex “partner” benefits, thus demonstrating that they had “<i>moved from neutrality to actively promoting the homosexual lifestyle</i>” – gays and lesbians don’t deserve health care! And in 2008 the AFA issued an “Action Alert” calling for members to protest the Campbell Soup Company after they had purchased ads in an LGBT magazine; according to the AFA, Campbell’s “<i>sent a message that homosexual parents constitute a family and are worthy of support</i>”; “<i>when you specifically target a homosexual magazine, then your company is basically endorsing these activities; you’re endorsing the lifestyle</i>,” <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2008/12/24/campbells-soup-has-the-gay/">explained Sharp</a>, suggesting a poor grasp of the word “endorse”. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">There are other distinctions Sharp and the AFA struggle with as well. The AFA is deeply critical of the “Day of Silence,” an event sponsored by GLSEN, saying that public school children should not be subjected to such “<i><a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Homosexual_agenda">pro-homosexual rhetoric</a></i>”. (Of course, since the Day of Silence is protesting prejudice, bigotry and, in particular bullying and abuse, aimed at homosexuals, saying that it constitutes “pro-homosexual” rhetoric only makes sense if you think that such bullying is okay.) <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2007/04/08/afa-stupidity-on-the-day-of-si-1/">Sharp encouraged</a> parents and concerned citizens to take action: they should “<i>write their school administrator and tell them they oppose the administration giving free rein to homosexual activist groups</i>,” and that “<i>if your school is participating in the ‘Day of Silence,’ that you simply keep your child home from school that day</i>.” Of course, <i>schools </i>do not participate in the event; it is students <i>at </i>schools that organize it; the administration isn’t part of it. Truth, accuracy and basic distinctions don’t matter much to people like Sharp, however. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">In 2005, Sharp managed to discern Walgreens’s<i>real</i>agenda behind sponsoring the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago: “<i>homosexual encounters will take place in the thousands</i>”, resulting in large numbers of new HIV patients; “<i>Walgreens must be salivating at the prospect of new customers this will create</i>,” <a href="https://books.google.no/books?id=P2UEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA24&lpg=PA24&dq=%22Director+of+Special+Projects%22+American+Family+Association&source=bl&ots=VuJN19s454&sig=ACfU3U3JBtggXxh6VNddIq4VKkhi6oKqtA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj927eW_K7iAhUz4KYKHbhxDpEQ6AEwBHoECAgQAQ#v=onepage&q=%22Director%20of%20Special%20Projects%22%20American%20Family%20Association&f=false">said Sharp</a>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">It isn’t <i>just </i>gay people that tick off Sharp and the AFA, however. Currently Sharif works as a “<i>full-time as a naturopathic physician at his two clinics in Kent and Bellevue, Washington</i>,” but is also affiliate clinical faculty at Bastyr. Coherence doesn’t matter much when all you do is nonsense anyways, we suppose. Sharif does claim that homeopathy is science-based. He doesn’t cite any science, and basically just <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Argument_from_authority">appeals to irrelevant authority</a> (<a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Luc_Montagnier">Luc Montagnier</a>, <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Dana_Ullman">Dana Ullmann</a> (!) and some economist and social theorist), points out <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Appeal_to_ancient_wisdom">that homeopathy is 200 years old</a>, which makes it younger than <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Trepanation">trepanation</a>, and <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Anecdotal_evidence">personal anecdotes</a> (“<i>I have seen results with homeopathic remedies that most people would consider miraculous</i>”). We admit that we haven’t read it, but her website is <a href="https://pleiadians.net/" rel="nofollow">here</a>. Its marketing slogan seems to be “<i>We are her to help raise your frequency</i>”, which would probably not be a good think if she meant <i>frequency</i>, but she probably doesn’t. Another prominent insight on the website,<span> </span>“<i>AWARENESS brings REALIZATION. Realization causes an Awakening. Awakening will bring you to an in-lightened state. In the Light, you will find your TRUTH…and finally you will know that the POWER IS WITHIN YOU</i>” (random capitalization in the original), suggests that she hasn’t quite mastered the powers of fluffy-slick <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Deepak_Chopra">choprawoo</a> with the slickness required to go mainstream. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: black; font-size: medium; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: start; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: black; font-size: medium; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: start; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The main alien messages seem to be:<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: black; font-size: medium; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: start; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">-<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span lang="EN-US">“<i>What the world needs now is love</i>.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;"> <!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-US"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">-<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span></span></span><!--[endif]--><span lang="EN-US">“<i>The Pleiadians say you control the power of all you are</i>” (“<i>It is important that you understand this</i>” and “<i>vitally important</i>” that you understand that you can share your wisdom with others. Shannon is, according to herself, a Christian conservative with a gift that allows her to see clearly through confusing and nebulous media reports to <a href="http://freethoughtblogs.com/dispatches/2012/12/28/gods-gift-of-discernment/">discern what’s really going on</a>: “<i>Friends, there is a gift that God has given me: I can smell something fishy a mile away. Like <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/2012_Benghazi_attack">Benghazi</a></i><i>. Almost on day one, I told my husband: ‘The facts don’t make sense. Something is wrong here</i>.’” What a great gift! She then used her gift to look through the reports on <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Sandy_Hook_massacre">the Newtown shootings</a>, and predictably discovered <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Sandy_Hook_massacre#Conspiracy_theories">a false flag operation</a>: You see, according to the official story, it looked like “<i>had Adam Lanza NOT had access to those legal guns, he could never have killed those kids. He was too mentally ill to have gotten those weapons himself</i>,” and Shannon at the time “<i>just couldn’t believe the TIMING and circumstances of this event- a GIFT to the Progressives to disarm us</i>.” Then, of course, she saw the light: “<i>Friends. I believe there is evidence of more than one shooter. I believe this was a PLANNED event- specifically to get the UN Small Arms Treaty signed</i>.” Apparently it is all part of a conspiracy, ostensibly somehow related to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libor_scandal">the LIBOR scandal</a>, that goes all the way to a “<i>massive, worldwide network of banks, the Federal Reserve and highly position individuals such as Tim Geihtner and Ben Bernanke</i>,” and ultimately to the government: “<i>I believe our GOVERNMENT shot those kids and teachers and used Adam Lanza and his family to pull it off</i>,” said Shannon. In fairness, Shannon has other evidence, too: <i>rumors</i>– that is, things that are <i>rumored </i>to happen; she doesn’t specify <i>from where</i>she has heard said rumors, but we suspect it has something to do with her gift.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Diagnosis: Ok, so we don’t really know much more about her. His specialty is something called Spiritually Guided Surgery, which is supposed to be an alternative kind of surgery without all the blood and sharp scalpels. How does it work? Well, Shafer’s answer to that question isn’t really an <i>answer</i>, but <a href="https://respectfulinsolence.com/2006/11/10/your-friday-dose-of-woo/">here we go</a>: “<i>Spiritually Guided Surgery is a holistic form of healing that works on <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Heroic_medicine">bringing the body into balance</a></i>,” whatever that might mean (Shafer doesn’t say much about what it means or what you should be looking for to determine whether a body is “in balance”), and is “<i>best be summed up as: Healing from Spirit, through Spirit, to Spirit</i>.” That claim requires an idiosyncratic interpretation of “best”, but OK: “<i>Unlike other modalities of healing, where energy is generally transferred through the practitioner to the client, Spiritually Guided Surgery involves surgery in the 5th auric level, which is commonly called the Etheric Template. The Etheric Template then becomes the Etheric <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Aura">Aura</a></i><i>, which in turn becomes the physical body</i>.” Saying that X <i>involves</i>Y isn’t explaining what X <i>is</i>, but the purported explanation has greater problems than merely failing to really explain anything. Perhaps we are just struggling to tell the auric levels apart?<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;"> <span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Apparently Shafer began his healing work after reading the book “<i>Jin Shin Do The <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Acupuncture#Acupressure">Acupressure</a></i><i> Way to Health</i>” and quickly ascended to becoming a <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Reiki">Reiki</a> practitioner at level two and ultimately a Reiki Master. In 1989 he also apparently became a Certified Massage Therapist in the USA. Who wouldn’t want a massage therapist who has read a self-help book on woo perform surgery on you (even if it’s on your aura)? Well, if you have concerns, Shafer can reassure you he doesn’t work alone, but <a href="http://thesecondsight.blogspot.com/2006/11/spiritually-misguided-lunacy.html">that the spirits will help him out</a>: The “<i>Spirit entities</i>” are “<i>beings that are very interested in helping the human race at this time. Many are seeking to be able to help their Host humans as well as other humans through the Spiritually Guided Surgery Practitioner</i>.” You can learn more about “<i>who the Spirit Surgeons are</i>” by paying for a “<i>Spiritually Guided Surgery Workshop</i>,” but he reveals some details to the rest of us for free: “<i>The Spirit Surgeons appear to me as people</i>.” (That, if true, should not exactly be trust-inducing.) “<i>They work at the 5th level of the aura which is about 450 millimeters from your body. It is called the Etheric Template. A template is used to ‘help shape something accurately’ (Collins Concise Dictionary). The Surgeons create the template of what your body can become in order for you to be in balance. The Template then becomes the Etheric Aura. The Etheric Aura is that which is closest to your body. Which then becomes you. With the Spiritual Surgeons/Healers they work on your entire body</i>.” He admits that he doesn’t completely understand what they are doing, however, but knows that “<i>[t]he Spiritually Guided Surgeons themselves are continually learning how to improve their techniques</i>.” And they <a href="https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Panacea">can do almost anything</a>: “<i>The Spirit Surgeons can perform actual operations as would normally be performed in a hospital. With Spirit Surgeons doing the surgery there is: No Pain, No blood loss, No recovery time, most often instant results</i>,” and they do so by “<i>helping to bring organs, bones, joints to equilibrium.
