<t><p class="indent1">My Chosen One <i>in whom</i> My soul delights. <t><p class="indent1">I have put My Spirit upon Him; <t><p class="indent1">He will bring forth justice to the nations. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>“He will not call out or shout aloud, <t><p class="indent1">Nor make His voice heard in the street. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>“A broken reed He will not break [off] <t><p class="indent1">And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish [He will not harm those who are weak and suffering]; <t><p class="indent1">He will faithfully bring forth justice. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>“He will not be disheartened or crushed [in spirit]; <t><p class="indent1">[He will persevere] until He has established justice on the earth; <t><p class="indent1">And the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>This is what God the LORD says, <t><p class="indent1">He who created the heavens and stretched them out, <t><p class="indent1">Who spread out the earth and its produce, <t><p class="indent1">Who gives breath to the people on it <t><p class="indent1">And spirit to those who walk on it, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>“I am the LORD, I have called You (the Messiah) in righteousness [for a righteous purpose], <t><p class="indent1">I will also take You by the hand and keep watch over You, <t><p class="indent1">And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people [Israel], <t><p class="indent1">As a light to the nations (Gentiles), <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>To open the eyes of the blind, <t><p class="indent1">To bring out prisoners from the dungeon <t><p class="indent1">And those who sit in darkness from the prison. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“I am the LORD, that is My Name; <t><p class="indent1">My glory I will not give to another, <t><p class="indent1">Nor My praise to carved idols. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“Indeed, the former things have come to pass, <t><p class="indent1">Now I declare new things; <t><p class="indent1">Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.” <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Sing to the LORD a new song, <t><p class="indent1"><i>Sing</i> His praise from the end of the earth! <t><p class="indent1">You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, <t><p class="indent1">You islands <i>and</i> coastlands, and those who inhabit them [sing His praise]! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Let the wilderness and its cities lift up <i>their voices,</i> <t><p class="indent1">The villages where Kedar lives. <t><p class="indent1">Let the inhabitants of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Sela shout for joy, <t><p class="indent1">Let them shout joyfully from the tops of the mountains. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Let them give glory to the LORD <t><p class="indent1">And declare His praise in the islands <i>and</i> coastlands. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>The LORD will go forth like a warrior, <t><p class="indent1">He will stir up <i>His</i> zeal like a man of war; <t><p class="indent1">He will shout out, yes, He will raise a war cry. <t><p class="indent1">He will prevail [mightily] against His enemies. <p class="hdg">The Blindness of the People</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>“I [the LORD] have been silent for a long time, <t><p class="indent1">I have been still and restrained Myself. <t><p class="indent1"><i>Now</i> I will moan like a woman in labor, <t><p class="indent1">I will both gasp and pant. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“I will lay waste the mountains and hills <t><p class="indent1">And wither all their vegetation; <t><p class="indent1">I will turn the rivers into coastlands <t><p class="indent1">And dry up the ponds. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“I will lead the blind by a way they do not know; <t><p class="indent1">I will guide them in paths that they do not know. <t><p class="indent1">I will make darkness into light before them <t><p class="indent1">And rugged places into plains. <t><p class="indent1">These things I will do [for them], <t><p class="indent1">And I will not leave them abandoned <i>or</i> undone.” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Those who trust in carved idols will be turned back, <t><p class="indent1">And utterly put to shame, <t><p class="indent1">Who say to cast images, <p class="indent1stline">“You are our gods.” <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Hear, you deaf! <t><p class="indent1">And look, you blind, that you may see. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Who is blind but My servant [Israel], <t><p class="indent1">Or deaf like My messenger whom I send? <t><p class="indent1">Who is blind like the one who is at peace <i>with Me</i> [in a covenant relationship], <t><p class="indent1">Or so blind as the servant of the LORD? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>You have seen many things, but you do not observe them; <t><p class="indent1"><i>Your</i> ears are open, but no one hears. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>The LORD was pleased for His righteousness’ sake <t><p class="indent1">To make the law great and prove to be glorious. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But this is a people despoiled and plundered; <t><p class="indent1">All of them are trapped in holes, <t><p class="indent1">Or are hidden away in prisons. <t><p class="indent1">They have become a prey with no one to rescue them, <t><p class="indent1">And a spoil, with no one to say, “Give them back!” <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Who among you will listen to this? <t><p class="indent1">Who will listen and pay attention in the time to come? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Who gave up Jacob [the kingdom of Judah] for spoil, and [the kingdom of] Israel to the plunderers? <t><p class="indent1">Was it not the LORD, He against whom we [of Judah] have sinned, <t><p class="indent1">And in whose ways they [of Israel] were unwilling to walk, <t><p class="indent1">And whose law <i>and</i> teaching they did not obey? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/42-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Therefore He poured out on Israel the heat of His anger <t><p class="indent1">And the fierceness of battle; <t><p class="indent1">And engulfed him in fire, <t><p class="indent1">Yet he did not recognize [the lesson of repentance which the Assyrian conquest was intended to teach]; <t><p class="indent1">It burned him, but he did not take it to heart.<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">1</span> This is the first of the famous prophecies concerning the <i>Servant of the Lord,</i> the Messiah (Is 42:1-7;
