This year, four teams beat par and the best of the West Midlands counties was Warwickshire, in third place with a nine-under total of 867.</P><P>Shropshire and Herefordshire achieved their best position for some years in fourth, with five of their six players beating par on the day; unfortunately, not by enough shots to compete with the top three.</P><P>At lunch, Lincolnshire were second with 433, courtesy of four sub-par rounds, notably a 66 from their No 6 James Crampton. With every shot counting, a 77 and a 75 had to be added, while the same was true of Warwickshire where Andy Sullivan and Dale Marson carded 71s and Matt Cryer a shot better on 70, for a total of 438.</P><P>Leicestershire were 13 shots in the lead after a pair of 69s and a 65 from Charlie Ford, three scores from players who have not rushed to the pro ranks.</P><P>Under instruction 'to go for everything' in an attempt to claw back the 18 shots they were adrift, a seven-birdie 68 from Sullivan and the 69 from Cryer were a useful start to the afternoon. Cryer has missed a chunk of the season through injury yet still managed to tie fourth in the individual scoring from the 60 competitors.</P><P>Marson repeated his 71 and beat his Leicestershire playing partner by five to reduce the gap to five with two players from each county to finish. Unfortunately for Warwickshire, Neil Chaudhuri and David Gibson were the two Foxes to complete. Chaudhuri is a solid performer and Gibson the sort of No 6 any team would want to have. A 68 from Chaudhuri and a 70 from Gibson meant the margin was 12.</P><P>Gibson has won just about everything in the Midlands.
