The conversation will be led by members of the ICS community.</p> <p>The Recommendations were the culmination of six weeks of trainings on the role of policy and advocacy in the current connectivity environment. Participants — which included over 80 individuals from the US and Canada, most of whom are members of Indigenous communities —used the dialogue over these trainings to collaboratively develop a set of recommendations that aim to support Indigenous Communities in providing their own connectivity solutions. On the final day of the <strong><a href="https://www.internetsociety.org/regions/north-america/">2021 ICS</a></strong>, participants reviewed, contributed to, and ultimately adopted these recommendations as an official output of the summit. The Policy Recommendations build on previous documents in <strong><a href="https://www.internetsociety.org/resources/doc/2020/2019-ics-policy-recommendations">2019</a></strong> and <strong><a Panelists were <strong>Derek Khanna</strong>, Author of the RSC Policy Brief: <a href="http://publicknowledge.org/files/withdrawn_RSC_Copyright_reform_brief.pdf">Three Myths about Copyright Law and Where to Start to Fix it</a>, and <strong>Ben Sheffner</strong>, VP, Legal Affairs at the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), moderated by Robert W. Clarida. For most of our country’s history, copyright policy and legislation were largely immune from the partisan rancor that has long characterized other areas such as tax policy, social programs,and privacy protection. The organized revolt against recent efforts to enhance copyright protections, including the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA), underscores that things have changed. The panelists, who come from both sides of the debate, explored the competing interests and ideologies that brought us here, and how the heightened role of politics in copyright policy is likely to play out.
