International air cargo markets recorded healthy growth in 2024, after two years in decline.

Preliminary traffic figures for the full calendar year 2024, released by Kuala Lumpur based Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), revealed strong growth in both international air passenger and cargo markets. The increase in flight frequencies alongside network expansions supported solid growth in travel demand, while robust e-commerce activity and disruptions to maritime shipping drove air cargo volumes higher.

“2024 was a strong year for Asia Pacific airlines. The post-pandemic recovery on North East Asia routes, helped by the relaxation of visa policies, together with overall healthy demand across the region, drove growth in both leisure and business travel markets. This resulted in a 30.5% increase in the number of international passengers carried for the year, reaching a total of 365 million , ” said Subhas Menon, AAPA Director General.

Despite weakness in the global manufacturing sector, Asia Pacific carriers saw significant growth in their air cargo business, driven by a surge in e-commerce sales and the region’s role as a manufacturing hub, particularly in China,

“The outlook for air travel markets in 2025 remains broadly positive, although growth rates are expected to moderate further. However, airlines continue to face challenges, including rising labour, maintenance, and aircraft leasing costs, as well as operational pressures due to ongoing delays in aircraft deliveries. To navigate these challenges, airlines are focusing on active cost management and seeking the commitment of equipment suppliers to address supply chain problems, while continuing to invest in growth opportunities,” he added.

6 February 2025 Photo : Vietnam Airlines

<div class="a2a_kit Festival serves as the most direct cultural window to understand the Chinese people.

BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) — With traditional fairs and shopping and travel booms over this year’s extended holiday, China is about to ring in the Spring Festival of the Year of the Snake, the first since its inclusion into the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list.

For Chinese across the world, the Spring Festival is a time for family reunions, festive traditions, holiday shopping and diverse cultural and tourism activities. This year, it falls on Jan. 29 with hundreds of millions of people traveling to reunite with families in the world’s largest annual human migration.

Celebrations highlight both traditional and modern elements, from temple fairs, lantern displays, lion dances and intangible cultural heritage bazaars to village galas, light and drone shows, museum exhibitions, and travels at home and abroad.

This year, festive glee and activities are further boosted by the UNESCO recognition, pro-consumption policies and the extension of the traditional seven-day holiday by an extra day.

This year, many cities are holding more traditional festive activities, motivated by the inscription of the Spring Festival on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December. The southwestern megacity of Chongqing has planned more than 100 intangible cultural heritage exhibitions, bazaars and performances during the holiday.

For centuries, shopping has been a crucial part of Spring Festival preparations: from nice food to new clothes and carefully chosen gifts.

Following the UNESCO recognition, Chinese consumers also appear to be particularly interested in goods with a cultural festival flair.

In recent years, the Spring Festival shopping lists have included more imported goods, reflecting Chinese people’s rising purchasing power and growing appetite for imported quality goods.

In addition to local festivities, many are venturing farther afield to make the most of the eight-day Spring Festival holiday.

The extended holiday has given a boost to the travel industry. While tourist cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Chengdu are attracting large numbers of holidaymakers, smaller cities are also getting more travelers who wish to savor celebrations with local flavors, according to Fliggy, a leading online travel agency.

Thanks to China’s further easing of visa policies, many Chinese cities are also witnessing an influx of international visitors, with many eager to experience the festival traditions.

“The UNESCO heritage status gives Spring Festival worldwide recognition and increases its appeal to international tourists,” said Zhou Huijie, an analyst at Trip.com research institute.

Trip.com Group has estimated that inbound bookings would jump by 203 percent during the Spring Festival, with tourists from the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, the United States, Australia, Thailand and Britain topping the list.

Spring Festival serves as the most direct cultural window to understand the Chinese people and it is also a traditional festival with the most Chinese cultural characteristics, said Feng Jicai, a renowned Chinese writer who has long championed intangible cultural heritage protection.

Jan. 29 , 2025

Image : An aerial drone photo taken on Jan. 27, 2025 shows a dragon dance performance at the Huangshan Mountain scenic area in east China’s Anhui Province.

Prayagraj , India ( REUTERS) : Nearly 15 million Hindus, six times the number expected, took a dip in freezing waters seeking absolution of their sins on the first day of a six-week festival in India expected to draw the world’s largest gathering of humanity.

They sought absolution of their sins by immersing themselves at the confluence of sacred rivers.

Held every 12 years, the Maha Kumbh Mela, or Great Pitcher Festival, as the religious event in the city of Prayagraj in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh is called, attracts more than 400 million visitors, both Indians and tourists.

Officials had expected the first ritual dip to draw 2.5 million visitors.

As many as 40,000 police officers are on guard to provide security and help manage the crowds, while surveillance cameras equipped with artificial intelligence capabilities will ensure continuous monitoring.

“It is our festival,” said ascetic Hazari Lala Mishra, who immersed himself before sunrise, which is considered an auspicious time, on January 13.

“(It is) the only festival for hermits and monks, and we wait for it desperately.”

Authorities expected the first ritual dip to draw more than 2.5 million visitors, followed by a “royal bath” on January 14 – reserved for ascetics in the belief that it absolves them of sin and confers salvation from the cycle of life and death.

Amid public warnings to walk in lines without halting anywhere, droves of marchers headed for bathing positions to await sunrise at the confluence of the three holy rivers, the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical, invisible Saraswati.

Advancing towards the waters’ edge in the winter morning fog, they chanted invocations in praise of the Hindu deities Lord Shiva and Mother Ganga, who personifies India’s holiest river.

The festival originates in a Hindu tradition that the god Vishnu, known as the Preserver, wrested away from demons a golden pitcher that held the nectar of immortality.

In a 12-day celestial fight for its possession, four drops of the nectar fell to earth, in the cities of Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, where the festival is held every three years in rotation.

A mix of religion, spirituality and tourism like no other in India, the event offers a test in crowd management for authorities in the world’s most populous country, who must balance arrangements for millions while retaining its sanctity.

A temporary city sprawling over 4,000 hectares (10,000 acres) has sprang up along the rivers’ banks, with 150,000 tents to house the visitors, and is equipped with 3,000 kitchens, 145,000 toilets and 99 car parks.

Authorities are also installing as many as 450,000 new electricity connections, with the festival expected to consume more power than 100,000 urban flats require in a month.

Indian Railways has added 98 trains to make 3,300 trips carrying festival visitors, in addition to regular services to Prayagraj.

Uttar Pradesh is governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party,, which hopes a successful Kumbh Mela will burnish its efforts to reclaim and glorify India’s religious and cultural symbols.

That has been a plank for the party’s Hindu base promised since Modi swept to power nationwide in 2014.“The Maha Kumbh embodies India’s timeless spiritual heritage and celebrates faith and harmony,” Modi said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

14 Jan 2025

As the world ushered in the New Year, global tourism witnessed a festive surge, with the Christmas and New Year holiday period sparking an unprecedented travel rush.

China, a sought-after destination for international travelers, attracted crowds eager to explore its ancient heritage, modern marvels, and stunning landscapes—all made even more accessible thanks to the country’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy.

Meanwhile, China’s own citizens were on the move too, with outbound travel showing explosive growth, becoming a key driver of the tourism industry and a catalyst for broader economic development.

According to the National Immigration Administration, during the 2025 New Year’s holiday, China’s border inspection agencies facilitated 1.803 million inbound and outbound trips, marking a 13.7 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This includes 869,000 trips by Chinese mainland residents (up 11.1 percent), 749,000 by Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan residents (up 12.8 percent), and 185,000 by foreign nationals (up 33.6 percent).

Although New Year’s Day is just a one-day holiday, many people extended it into a mini vacation by combining it with their annual leave or taking additional days off. Data from Fliggy, an online travel platform, shows that demand for high-end hotel bookings in China surged around the New Year holiday, with reservations in the past week increasing by over 40 percent compared to last year.

Popular domestic destinations included Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Nanjing, Xi’an, and Harbin. For outbound travel, top destinations were Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea, the United States, Australia, Vietnam, France, and Singapore.

Fliggy’s report also highlighted that regions like Heilongjiang, Jilin, Xinjiang, and Hebei became particularly popular for “snow and ice tourism” during the New Year. Ticket sales for indoor snow and ice attractions in cities like Chengdu, Wuhan, Shaoxing, and Wuxi soared, with activities such as skiing and hot springs gaining widespread appeal. In contrast, southern destinations like Hainan, Guangxi, and Guangdong saw a rise in bookings for “winter escape” trips. Popular activities in these areas included surfing, night fishing and scuba diving.

Outbound tourism maintained its robust growth from 2023. Fliggy’s data showed that by the early hours of January 1, 2025, outbound bookings had increased by nearly 70 percent year on year, with international car rental bookings also rising by over 70 percent. Among the most popular car rental destinations were the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

Free-visa policy brings influx of foreign tourists

China’s updated visa-free policies also encouraged many foreign tourists to visit China for the New Year.

Travel company Ctrip’s data revealed that from December 31, 2024, to January 1, 2025, inbound tourism orders doubled year-on-year, with orders from neighboring countries like South Korea and Japan growing by 215 percent and 145 percent, respectively.

Since July 2023, China has been actively optimizing its visa-free policies to create a welcoming environment for international travelers. The mutual visa exemption agreement with Georgia came into effect in May. By October, citizens of four additional countries, including Portugal and Greece, were granted visa-free access. China further extended its visa exemption policy to nine more countries, including Bulgaria and Japan, effective from November 30 to the end of 2025.

Data from China’s National Immigration Administration (NIA) shows that between January and November 2024, China recorded 29.2 million foreign visits, an impressive 86.2 percent year-on-year increase. Of these, 17.4 million benefited from visa-free entry, marking a 123.3 percent rise.

The most recent updates to the country’s visa-free transit policy came on December 17, extending the permitted stay for eligible foreign travelers from the initial 72 hours and subsequent 144 hours to 240 hours, or 10 days. The policy came into effect immediately, and eligible visitors can enter China without a visa through any of the 60 open ports across 24 provincial-level regions, provided their stay does not exceed 240 hours within the designated areas.

Aside from travels, consumer enthusiasm during the holiday is also high. Data from online travel platforms indicate that searches for “New Year’s Eve hotels” increased by over 70 percent year-on-year, and hotel bookings for city outskirts rose nearly 20 percent, and Beijing emerged as the most popular city for New Year’s Eve hotel reservations, with various countdown events and light shows attracting tourists.

According to Beijing’s commerce bureau, the holiday consumption market was vibrant during the holiday, with shopping malls extending their operating hours on New Year’s Eve, hosting various cultural and entertainment activities that attracted large crowds. Official data shows that the city’s 60 key commercial areas recorded a total footfall of 8.059 million, a 7.8 percent increase year on year. – Courtesy : CGTN

Photo : Tourists in Shanghai ( By
