immigrants in Trinidad and Tobago in a state of limbo. The biggest doubts are about the possibility of returning home, going to a third country or staying in TT. For many Venezuelans, returning home could become a reality if there is a change of government. Carlos Martinez, a Venezuelan who has lived in TT since 2016, told Newsday his expectations of going home are great. "Going home after eight years here is a dream. If Nicolas Maduro finally leaves the presidency in January, my family and I will leave immediately." Martinez is a petroleum engineer. Here, he works as a gardener. "A change of government would open the doors to progress for Venezuela. There would be job opportunities, and we would be able to work in our professions and live peacefully." But Dennys Hernandez, a Venezuelan lawyer and political scientist who has lived in TT for several years, said this alternative does not seem the most viable, owing to the results of the elections announced by the National Council of Venezuela (CNE) – which confirmed Maduro as the winner over the opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez. "The CNE declared Maduro the winner, but until today it has not shown the minutes certifying this victory. The opposition does have the minutes to declare Gonzalez the winner." Maduro will assume his third consecutive term on January 10, just ten days before Trump takes power in the US. "That difference in (time of) the inaugurations will allow Maduro to complete his mandate first without the US interfering. I don't think (US President Joe) Biden) will prevent Maduro from doing so. By the time Trump comes to power, (Maduro) will already be governing for one more term." This complex situation is what could prevent Venezuelans in TT from making their dream of returning home come true. "Things in Venezuela are the same or even worse. I talk to different Venezuelans here every day. They all want to return to Venezuela, but not if Maduro is still in power. It really is a complicated situation." Another option Venezuelans are considering is to migrate to a third country. The US has been one of the most favoured destinations for migrating Venezuelans. Sofia Leon Figueroa, a social activist in TT, believes with Trump in power, things could get complicated for immigrants to that country. "We don't know what Trump's plans are. We have seen in the news he will carry out massive deportations of immigrants and that includes Venezuelans. The option of going to America no longer seems viable. In fact, many Venezuelans are no longer crossing the Darien Gap (between Colombia and Panama) to go to America." Other countries close to Venezuela, such as Colombia and Brazil, are receiving Venezuelans with legal opportunities. "Going to the US is risking losing our savings because Trump said he will not allow the entry of more immigrants. My wife and I are thinking of going to Brazil. There the government is opening the doors for us. There is help for Venezuelans and good jobs," said Luis Perez. Staying in TT may be the third and safest alternative for Venezuelan immigrants. [caption id="attachment_1122558" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Two ships from the Angel del Orinoco shipping company await their departure from the port of Tucupita in Venezuela, bound for TT, in January 2024. This shipping company currently takes 38 Venezuelan immigrants a week back to their country legally. - Photo by Grevic Alvarado[/caption] Perez recognises TT is a good country economically, but there is a lack of legal opportunities. "My wife and I arrived in TT in 2018 and got work permits, but my two children have not been able to study. That makes us think about leaving this country." Hernandez was also critical of the few legal options TT offers immigrants. "Unfortunately, TT does not give us opportunities as people. There are many professionals here who can contribute to the development of this country and that makes many think about leaving. Others in Venezuela think about coming for economic reasons." The TT government recently approved an extension of one year of work permits for Venezuelans registered in 2018. The exact number of Venezuelans who remain here legally is not known. Meanwhile, shipping companies continue to make weekly trips between TT and Venezuela. Orangel Lacourt, owner of the company Angel del Orinoco, said it currently has a weekly departure on Thursdays from Cedros. "The number of people leaving for Venezuela is still high. Every Thursday we leave with 38 legal passengers. From Venezuela to TT, generally, five or six people come who can obtain visas." He believes by December these numbers will increase because of Christmas. "We will implement two weekly trips that will double the number of Venezuelans returning home." Many of these Venezuelans will remain there. Others will go to a third destination and some will possibly return to TT in January, legally or illegally. The three live in Gasparillo with their parents Julio, a Venezuelan migrant who arrived in Trinidad and Tobago many years ago, and their mother Marsha, a Trinidadian also in love with Venezuelan culture. The siblings' passion is music and the cuatro is their favourite instrument. They decided to start studying music and the cuatro in early 2023 at the Santa Cecilia orchestra project in Diego Martin. However, in October 2023, they switched to the La Casita music school in Arima. [caption id="attachment_1084250" align="alignnone" width="1024"] The Pereira Castilla family is one of thousands that share Trini-Venezuelan roots. - Photo by Grevic Alvarado[/caption] Xiomara, 17, and Xavier, 15, made their first official performance in the junior parang competition of the National Parang Association as part of the La Casita children's band in November 2023. “It was a great experience to go on stage and play music in Spanish. It made us feel proud to represent two countries,” Xavier said. They also performed at Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) for International Children's Day and at the La Casita Christmas concert in December as well as at other community events. “The cuatro is a cultural instrument that allows us to learn about our roots because it is a tradition in Venezuela and is part of the TT parang,” Xiomara said. She is the only one of the three who speaks a little Spanish. Julio, her father, said they like to play the different rhythms of Venezuelan aguinaldo and polo margariteño and TT parang. Xiomara wants to learn to play the violin, Xavier the guitar and Xiera, nine, the cello. Right now they are learning pieces of waltzes, boleros and boleros rancheros with Prof Eduardo Rivas. [caption id="attachment_1084249" align="alignnone" width="1024"] The Pereira Castillo siblings are learning different musical rhythms with the cuatro, guided by teacher Eduardo Rivas at La Casita of Arima. - Photo by Grevic Alvarado[/caption] They are also part of the cadets of the Red Cross and the choir of the Tortuga parish church in Gasparillo. Having parents from different cultures leads them to live different cultural experiences at home. But they generally learn about Venezuelan culture through music. “Although we don't speak Spanish, we coexist in the best way with it. It is a benefit for us to have two cultures,” Xiomara said. They believe at some point TT will be a bilingual country. Xiera said she loves going to La Casita and learning not only music, but also sharing with other children in the Spanish-speaking community. This principle transcends our work, since it is part of each person we support and who, in turn, becomes an ally to help and motivate others to move forward.” This date was also established for the anniversary of the birth of the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Henry Dunant, and had its first celebration on May 8, 1948.Dunant was a Swiss who organised villagers to help the wounded at the Battle of Solferino, Italy, in 1859. Stephan Kishore, crisis management co-ordinator, said the TTRCS is also carrying out outreach services in communities where people cannot easily access health centres or the service is not regular. Newsday interviewed Kishore at the clinic on April 20. Primary healthcare includes medical consultations, diagnostic tests, blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, BMI, HbA1C, lipid profile and urinalysis. Diabetic or hypertensive patients are given home testing kits to monitor and report their findings to better inform their diagnoses. "We understand vulnerable groups may not have the resources to always purchase medications." "The clinic was born as a solution for migrants and other vulnerable people to have access to medical care, and has always remained open to serve everyone." "There is no selection process. The people who need the assistance receive it. If some days are oversubscribed, which usually happens at the beginning of the year, we try to offer more clinic days. We can see all the patients who apply." All clinic services are provided. They also have Spanish translators available so migrants can interact more effectively with the medical staff. "This is not a programme just for migrants. Migrants tend to have more need for healthcare services at TTRCS because they cannot access them elsewhere." In cases where they can access a free clinic from a local doctor's office or religious organisation, they usually do not have translators, so they cannot communicate well. "In the past, we offered the clinic to people with hearing disabilities and made sure we had sign language interpreters to support communications." The clinic also takes a healthy lifestyle approach in which it provides education and counselling to achieve results, based on lifestyle choices rather than relying solely on medications. He said they are currently bringing health education to communities, in order to reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases and promote healthy lifestyles. "Our disaster preparedness programmes focus on building community resilience through training and capacity building. We also work with partners, such as the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM), and the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, to educate communities on disaster preparedness." "We serve more than 300 groups, known as youth links, in elementary schools and our trailblazer’s youth club in 12 high schools, and will expand to more than 40 by 2024. These youth programmes include similar content designed for the community." The clinic also carries out one clinical day per month in Trinidad, one day per month in Tobago, and two to three outreach activities every month. "During the in-person clinic we see 15 to 20 patients and in extension around 50 to 75." However, these are days of care carried out by volunteer doctors, which prevents more days from being offered. The TTRCS plans to expand its diagnostic capabilities by adding ultrasound and ECG tests. On May 8, the TTRCS will be celebrating World Red Cross Day with a new day of special medical care open to everyone. The statement was published on social media, supported by Andreina Briceño Ventura-Brown, director of La Casita. “April 28 is a day of global reflection on an issue transcends borders and challenges all nations: safety and health at work. However, for many migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who have found refuge in Trinidad and Tobago, this day takes on an even deeper and more urgent meaning,” the writing says. The statement added in a context marked by the lack of recognition of basic refugee rights, migrant workers face additional challenges when it comes to their safety and well-being at work. “There have been cases of workplace accidents that have left people seriously injured, disabled or even dead. The most alarming thing is, in many of these cases, companies do not assume their responsibility, leaving those affected without support or compensation.” La Casita recognises amid the challenges faced by migrant workers, refugees and asylum seekers in Trinidad and Tobago, the Ministry of Labour has been working to protect labour rights and ensure safe and healthy working conditions for all employees, regardless of their origin or immigration status. However, despite these efforts, Venezuelan workers continue to “suffer abuse from employers who attempt to evade their responsibilities.” La Casita said through the Ministry of Labour, inspections have been carried out to ensure compliance with safety standards and reporting channels have been established for workers to report abuses and violations of labour rights. “Despite these efforts, Venezuelan workers remain vulnerable to exploitation and abuse from unscrupulous employers. Cases of workplace accidents have left many workers seriously injured or disabled, but companies do not take responsibility. This leaves those affected without support or compensation, perpetuating a situation of injustice and vulnerability.” La Casita said it is essential to recognise the magnitude of the problem and advocate for greater protection of labour rights for all workers, including Venezuelan refugees. “Companies and authorities must assume their responsibility to provide safe and healthy working conditions and ensure the rights of all workers are respected, regardless of their origin or immigration status. “Only through a joint and committed effort, involving workers, employers, authorities and international organisations, can we achieve significant change that guarantees that all workers can carry out their work in a safe, dignified and fair manner.” [post_title] => NGO calls for safe working conditions for migrants [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => ngo-calls-for-safe-working-conditions-for-migrants [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2024-04-29 16:57:25 [post_modified_gmt] => 2024-04-29 20:57:25 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => https://newsday.co.tt/?p=1080404 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [7] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 1079536 [post_author] => 145 [post_date] => 2024-04-25 10:42:32 [post_date_gmt] => 2024-04-25 14:42:32 [post_content] =>
After the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD), which brings together the main Venezuelan opposition political parties, announced Edmundo González Urrutia as its presidential candidate, Venezuelans in TT were optimistic about political change in their country.

On Friday night, González Urrutia was announced as the coalition's candidate to face Nicolas Maduro in the July 28 election.

This followed the disqualification of leader María Corina Machado, who won the opposition primary elections in October 2023.

The social media of Venezuelans in TT were filled with comments. Alejandro Sotillo (Flacko), Yermi Yojandri (Yeyo), Jeremy Thomas (J Thommy), Jesus Lima and Jehonas Núñez (Jay Tiky) have been working for a year on the plan and have already begun to perform regularly in San Fernando. Sotillo, Yojandri and Thomas produce and sing the music; Lima is the speaker of each performance of the band, and Nunez manages its social media. All of them, between 18 and 22 years old, arrived with their parents a few years ago in TT. They live in the south and decided to join their talents. Sotillo told Newsday Southside plays various musical styles. “We are a group of multifaceted young people who can sing dancehall, riddim, rap, reggaeton, among other styles.” Southside mixes the talent of each member with individual performances supported by the rest. "It is a wonderful experience. We try to bring a little of our ideas to the stage with our own songs and supporting each other so each presentation is the best and the public is satisfied,” said Thomas. Yojandri goes further and believes dreams can come true. In addition, the language can be a barrier for us, but every day we work to improve, to organise ourselves, to make ourselves known through social networks and why not? One day we will be able to get on a big stage in TT.” Sotillo, Yojandri and Thomas have some songs playing on Spanish-speaking social media. The five young people, like any other migrants, work every day in different areas and at night or weekends they dedicate themselves to their music. “It is a source of pride every time we get on stage. To think during the day we were working in construction or planting and at night we have those minutes of fame,” Lima said. They will continue working on their music and talent, with their sights set on the big stage. “We are aware in order to go up we must prepare ourselves and especially in TT with the language, that is why each one studies English on their own every day. We want to be an example to everyone(that dreams come true, but with dedication,” said Thomas. Southside has been performing in other areas of TT. National Cuatro Day in Venezuela is celebrated on April 4, because on that date in 2004, Venezuela launched the massive cultural programme La Siembra del Cuatro (The Sowing of Cuatro). The objective is to teach children and adolescents especially how to play the cuatro. This year marks two decades since the programme began. Alvaro Sanchez Cordero, ambassador of Venezuela, said: “It is a true honour for us to pay tribute to the most Venezuelan musical instrument, the cuatro, which represents our identity." The cuatro, a four-stringed instrument from the guitar family, is used in all the folkloric rhythms of Venezuela such as the joropo, the gaita and the calypso of El Callao city. One million children are part of El Sistema in Venezuela, but what not many people know is that in addition to classical music, El Sistema also has a popular music programme, which of course includes cuatro.” Sanchez Cordero said the concert also served to pay tribute to TT and the original Venezuelan coco panyols who brought the cuatro from Venezuela to Trinidad and Tobago's cocoa plantations in the 19th century – “An example of union and cultural bond between Venezuela and TT.” [caption id="attachment_1077391" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Jalan Maughn and Jonathan Mottley perform the Venezuelan song Pajarillo, delighting guests at the National Day of the Venezuelan Cuatro.
- GREVIC ALVARADO[/caption] After the welcoming words, musicians who are part of the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Co-operation (IVCC) of the Venezuelan embassy joined cuatrista Rodolfo Pereira, director of the Venezuelan music group Nuevas Raíces, and Jeremías Mai Marcano, oboist and music teacher in a performance. La Casita issued a public statement through its social media for World Health Day, April 7. "These marginalised populations often endure arduous journeys, fleeing from communities affected by war, conflict, natural disasters, and economic crises, only to encounter barriers to healthcare upon arrival." It said refugees and migrants constitute a diverse group with unique health needs that may differ from those of the host populations. "Their experiences of displacement and migration, coupled with restrictive entry and integration policies, expose them to various health risks, including communicable diseases, injuries, mental health issues, and reproductive health complications. Despite these challenges, TT lacks a comprehensive national policy consistent with international standards governing migrants' access to ongoing healthcare services." La Casita believes the current healthcare policy presents several specific challenges for refugees and migrants: immunisation requirements for children, language barrier, legal status and documentation, stigma and discrimination, financial constraints, limited knowledge of healthcare systems, cultural differences, fear of detention or deportation and health literacy. "These challenges underscore the urgent need for TT to develop comprehensive policies ensuring equitable healthcare access for all migrants. The existing policy falls short in providing holistic care, and healthcare professionals may feel constrained in offering additional services due to policy restrictions." On this World Health Day let us reaffirm our commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of refugees and migrants in TT." "This occasion allows us to recall the important role of the Francophonie in its promotion of peace, democracy, respect for human rights and sustainable development, as well as the central place it gives to diversity and inclusion. These are all values that are also shared by Trinidad and Tobago." French is the fifth most spoken language in the world, the fourth most popular language on the Internet and the official language of 32 countries. French is an official language of Canada, as well as English. "This linguistic duality is an essential component of Canadian history and a foundation element of multiculturalism; something we cherish as Canadians." Browne said the International Day of La Francophonie "is a day of global and cultural importance, which celebrates the connections made around the world through the French language and its many dialects and creoles." He further underscored the significance of the French linguistic heritage, culture and values, and the partnerships and good relations that have been maintained between the members of La Francophonie and the government and people of TT. He called on those present to continue exploring these French linkages, which he said would enhance TT and the world at large. During the reception 23 young people were awarded diplomas in French language studies (DELF Junior) issued by the French Ministry of National Education. The students who sat the DELF Junior programme are from different high schools where they have been learning French. They have been joining the Alliance Francaise for extra lessons and to prepare for this exam. DELF is an official, high-quality diploma, in keeping with the levels of the common European framework of reference for languages, recognised throughout the world. Lucia Cabrera-Jones, head and co-founder of WOMEN, told Newsday the goal is to achieve integration. The event was part of the Flourish project carried out by WOMEN. “It is a project of several parts, but all with the same mission: to integrate migrants into local society with the support of host communities.” The community day was in addition to the hydroponics and sewing workshops in which locals and migrants, men and women, have participated in recent weeks. “It is a great job the IOM has been doing to ensure locals and migrants integrate, support each other and work as a team to advance as a proper society. Flourish is one of the many programmes are in process and have attracted the positive attention of the communities.” Traditional games played by four teams, live music, piñatas and prize-giving were highlights of the day. Andreina Briceño Ventura-Brown, director of La Casita, said her work team joined the activity as part of the IOM support group. “It is important these types of activities continue to be carried out so the migrant community and the locals know each other, understand their objectives and can then be part of the same sister community. “We carried out Women’s Day in Arima and now WOMEN do it in Longdenville. The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela announced on March 5 the schedule to include updating data, changes of residence, or registration of new voters from March 18 to April 16. This process includes Venezuelans currently living abroad. However, for migrants in TT, recording a change of residence to exercise their right to vote is practically impossible, as one requirement is proof of official residence issued by the TT government. Under Venezuelan election law, only Venezuelans over 18 and who have residency or any other record of permanent legal residence outside the country can take part. This means only those who obtained official residency status in TT since the last presidential election in 2018 can register or update their addresses. Just over 300 Venezuelans who met the legal requirements were able to take part in that election. Currently, about 8,000 Venezuelans have work permits to remain in TT. Newsday asked the consulate if this document would allow Venezuelans to change their residence to vote in the presidential election and the answer was “no.” The total number of Venezuelans in TT is unknown. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), in its latest quarterly records, reported 25,000 refugees and asylum-seekers. Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds said on June 26, 2023, in the Senate, the number of legal or illegal Venezuelans could not be quantified. Venezuelan citizens who meet the requirements to update their data can do so at the consulate on Victoria Avenue, Port of Spain, with a current or expired laminated ID card. The denial of registration to Venezuelans with a work permit has generated controversy in the community. Jesus Thomas, a member of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado’s team in TT, told Newsday the work permit is a legal document issued by the TT government and should be accepted by the consulate. “The work permit is also a permit to legally remain in TT. Therefore it is a document to demonstrate our legal status here since 2019.” Thomas said the right of Venezuelans in TT to decide the political destiny of their country is being denied. “In other countries, the situation of Venezuelans is different from TT. In some places, we can obtain residency in two years, but in TT we can spend ten or 15 years waiting, as happens to many, and they cannot do it. It is incomprehensible that having a legal work permit is insufficient to demonstrate status here.” Thomas urged Venezuelans who can register with the CNE to do so on time. However, as of this Monday, a week after the CNE registration process began worldwide, the Venezuelan consulate in TT had not yet opened registration. Newsday tried to find out why the consulate has not started updating electoral data, but messages were not answered. "We are making pleasant progress towards a more sustainable trade relationship between the two countries, traditionally with a surplus for TT, of approximately 90 per cent vs ten per cent, due to the weight of energy-related products, with an increase in exports from the DR to TT of 22 per cent in 2021, 36 per cent in 2022, and 19 per cent for the month of January 2024,” he said.
