شرطة كركوك نجا من محاولة اغتيال بتفجير أربع عبوات ناسفة ولاصقة </p> <p>بشكل متعاقب أسفرت عن استشهاد وإصابة 18 شخصاً غالبيتهم عناصر أمن. وقال المصدر في حديث صحفي ،إن "عبوة ناسفة كانت ملصقة بسيارة من نوع (لوري سكانيا)، كانت مركونة في منطقة التبة وسط كركوك انفجرت، في ساعة متقدمة من ليل أمس، مستهدفة موكب معاون مدير عام شرطة محافظة كركوك اللواء تورهان عبد الرحمن. وأضاف المصدر الذي طلب عدم الكشف عن اسمه، أنه "عند توجه قوة أمنية إلى موقع الحادث انفجرت ثلاث عبوات ناسفة بشكل متعاقب، مما أسفر عن استشهاد أحد منتسبي الأمن الكردي (الأسايش) وإصابة 17 عنصراً في الشرطة، أحدهم ضابط برتبة رائد وثلاثة من منتسبي الأسايش، فضلاً عن ستة مدنيين.</p> <p><strong>استمرار الاعتصام في مدينة الرمادي للمطالبة برحيل الاحتلال </strong></p> <p>لليوم الرابع على التوالي يقيم أهالي مدينة الرمادي اعتصامهم في ساحة التحريرساحة الشهيد غني مع انضمام وفد كبير من شيوخ عشائر ومواطني</p> <p>محافظة النجف للمطالبة بإخراج الاحتلال ورحيل حكومة المالكي والإفراج عن المعتقلين .وأوضحت وكالات الأنباء اليوم الاربعاء أن جموعاً كبيرة من أهالي محافظة الأنبار يقيمون اعتصامهم لليوم الرابع على التوالي للمطالبة بإخراج الاحتلال ورحيل حكومة الفساد والإفراج عن المعتقلين في ساحة التحرير بمدينة الرمادي .وأكدت المصادر أن وفداً كبيراً </strong></p> <p>اعلن المرصد السوري لحقوق الانسان يوم الاربعاء عن جمع أسماء 453 مدنيا على الاقل قتلوا خلال ستة أسابيع تقريبا في الاحتجاجات المطالبة بالديمقراطية في سوريا. <br/>ونقلت وكالة رويترز عن مدير المرصد السوري لحقوق الانسان رامي عبد الرحمن قوله ان الاسماء المتوفرة لدى المرصد تعود لقتلى في درعا وريف ودمشق والساحل. <br/>ومن جانب اخر قال شاهد لرويترز انه رأى قافلة من 30 دبابة سورية على الاقل ارهابية اغتالت اليوم ضابط برتبة ملازم اول، وهو امر احدى السيطرات في الاعظمية داخل مستشفى النعمان باسلحة كاتمة للصوت، بعد أن فشلت تلك المجموعة في قتله أمس الثلاثة. واوضح المصدر ان الضابط كان قد اصيب بصدره يوم امس الثلاثاء برصاص قناص في ساحة عنتر وتم نقله الى مستشفى النعمان لتلقي العلاج. وتابع "ولكن اليوم اقتحم ارهابيون غرفة الضابط في المستشفى وامطروه بوابل من النيران من اسلحة كاتمة للصوت كما قاموا بقتل مرافقه ايضا ولاذوا بالفرار". وأشار الى ان تحقيقا تم فتحه حول كيفية دخول الارهابيين باسلحتهم الى المستشفى من دون تفتيش وتم اعتقال حرس المستشفى للتحقيق معهم.</p> <p><b>وزارة البيشمركة تنفي وجود طلب بإقامة قواعد أمريكية دائمة في اقليم كردستان</b></p> <p>نفى الأمين العام لوزارة البيشمركة في حكومة إقليم كردستان جبار ياور ،اليوم الاربعاء،وجود أي طلب من الحكومة الإتحادية أو القوات الأمريكية بإقامة قواعد أمريكية دائمة في إلاقليم. <br/>ياور قال في تصريح صحفي"ليس هناك اي طلب من قبل الحكومة او القوات الامريكية ، لبقاء قواتها في كردستان او في المناطق المتنازع عليها ". <br/>ويدور حاليا جدل بين الكتل السياسية بشأن احتمال بقاء قوات اميركية في العراق بعد عام 2011 في ظل مخاوف من عدم جاهزية القوات العراقية لحماية حدود العراق بسبب افتقارها للطائرات المقاتلة وشبكات الدفاع الجوي والمدفعية الثقيلة وكذلك السفن الحربية.</p> <p><strong>تعرض عناصر في الصحوات الى الضرب والشتم داخل ثكنة للجيش ببعقوبة </strong></p> <p>كشف مصدر مسؤول في صحوات محافظة ديالى اليوم عن تعرض عدد من عناصر الصحوات الى الاعتداء باحدى مقرات الجيش العراقي غرب مدينة بعقوبة اثناء استلامهم مستحقاتهم المالية مؤكداً فتح تحقيق في ملابسات ما حصل.</p> <p>وقال المصدر إن عددا من عناصر الصحوات تعرضوا الى الشتم والضرب على ايدي جنود عراقيين في مقر الفوج الاول التابع للواء 18 المرتبط بالفرقة الخامسة بالجيش العراقي المتمركز في منطقة الرازي 8كم غرب بعقوبة مبينا ان احد الضباط اشهر مسدسه ضد احد عناصر الصحوات بشكل استفزازي.وأضاف المصدر وهو قيادي في الصحوة طلب عدم الكشف عن اسمه ان عناصر الصحوات كانوا متواجدين داخل الثكنة العسكرية من اجل استلام مستحقاتهم المالية لشهرين الا انهم تعرضوا الى سوء معاملة لايمكن وصفها مؤكدا ان القيادات الامنية فتحت تحقيقا موسعا في ملابسات ما حصل دون إعطاء المزيد من التفاصيل.</p> <p><strong>أمرأة عراقية تأمل انصافها بعد أن قتل زوجها غدرا على يد قوات الإحتلال الأمريكية </strong></p> <p>ناشدت أمرأة عراقية تدعى (شوغيك ليون كرابيت خاجيك) كافة المسؤولين العراقيين أنصافها بعد إقدام قوات الإحتلال الأمريكي على قتل زوجها من دون أي أسباب حقيقية سوى العبث بأرواح الشعب العراقي والإستهانة بالدم العراقي. وقالت خاجيك وهي تروي قصتها المؤلمة: "بتاريخ 14/ 10/ 2005، وبينما كان زوجي يوصل أحد أصدقائه بسيارته الخاصة إلى بيته، وعندما وصلا إلى منطقة زيونة في بغداد، وجد أن الطريق كان مغلقا من قبل القوات الأمريكية المحتلة، الذي كان نصب مفرزة أمنية بالتزامن مع الإنتخابات البرلمانية التي جرت في ذلك الوقت في عموم العراق، وكان واجب هذه القوات فقط الحفاظ على الأمن". وتابعت بالقول "وقف زوجي وصديقه وهما بالسيارة في طابور طويل من المنتظرين أن تسمح لهم القوات الأمريكية المرور بالشارع، شأنه شأن عدد كبير من العراقيين الذين أضطروا للوقوف بأنتظار أن يفتح الطريق بعد مغادرة قوات الإحتلال الأمريكية المنطقة". وأشارت إلى أنه "وعلى حين غرة أصيب زوجي وهو في سيارته برصاصة قاتلة من قناص أمريكي أصابت راسه وأدت لوفاته مباشرة". وأضافت أن "كل الأوراق الرسمية الوثائق تثبت أن زوجي لم يفعل شيئا يستدعي إطلاق النار عليه بل أنه لم يخرج من سيارته أساسا، ولم يقم بفعل أي أمر قد يثير غضب الأمريكان". والأنكى (كما تقول السيدة خاجيك) أن قوات الإحتلال الأمريكية لم تفعل شيئا لمحاسبة الشخص المتورط بقتل زوجي، بل أن الموضوع أنتهى بعد قال لهم أنه آسف على ما اقترفه من ذنب كبير وهو قتل زوجي من دون أي سبب". وتساءلت "ماذا نفعل بهذا الأعتذار بعد أن فقدنا معلينا الوحيد وأين يذهب هؤلاء الأطفال الثلاثة وكيف يمكن أن يواجهوا الحياة وهم محرمون من والدهم ومعليهم الأول، خاصة أني لا أعمل". وتابعت أن القوات الأمريكية "أرسلت بعد فترة من قتل زوجي مبلغ 2500 دولار أمريكي كتعويض عن مقتله، وقد رفضنا أستلام المبلغ، وقلنا لهم نريد محاسبة الشخص الذي قتل زوجي من دون اي سبب حقيقي". وحول دور الحكومة العراقية في الموضوع قالت (خاجيك) أن "الحكومة العراقية لم تقم باي شيء من أجل أنصافنا ولم تلتفت لنا ابدا رغم كل المحاولات الحثيثة لنا من أجل دفعها لإنصافنا والوقوف إلى جانب عائلتنا التي فقدت معيلها برصاص جندي أمريكي زنجي لايعير أي أهتمام للدم العراقي الطاهر، وعندما حاولت رفع دعوة قضائية على القوات الأمريكي أخبروني أن ليس من صلاحيات المحاكم العراقية التدخل في هذا الأمر، ولا تستطيع اي محكمة عراقية أن تحاسب أي جندي أمريكي بسبب الحصانة التي يتمتعون بها في العراق". وتؤكد أنها لا تزال تبحث عن العدالة والإنصاف من قبل الحكومة العراقية واي جهة دولية تستطيع ان ترد لنا الحق من قاتل زوجي الذي لا يزال يعيش طليقا حرا ويعيش حياته بكل فرح، من دون أن يلتفت أنه أقترف أبشع جريمة وهي قتل شخص من دون أي سبب، فأين العدالة وحقوق الإنسان التي تدعي أمريكا مختلفة بسقوط عدد من قذائف الهاون على مطار بغداد الدولي اليوم .وأفاد مصدر حكومي أن أربعة أشخاص أصيبوا بسقوط عدد من قذائف الهاون على مجمع سكني داخل مطار بغداد غرب بغداد.</p> <p>وأضاف المصدر إن المصابين تم نقلهم إلى المستشفى القريب من مكان الحادث لتلقي العلاج .ولم يذكر المصدر معلومات أخرى تتعلق بجنسية المصابين أو حجم الأضرار المادية التي خلفها القصف.</p> <p><strong>انفجار عبوة ناسفة في منطقة بغداد مزروعة على جسر المشتل في منطقة بغداد الجديدة شرق بغداد انفجرت صباح اليوم، وأدى انفجارها إلى إصابة ثلاثة أشخاص بجروح مختلفة".توأضاف المصدر " أن قوة أمنية طوقت مكان الحادث وقطعت الطرق المؤدية إليه ونقلت birth defects in the Iraqi city of Falluja has for the first time concluded that genetic damage could have been caused by weaponry used in US assaults that took place six years ago.</p> <p>The research, which will be published next week, confirms earlier <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130124025420/http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/nov/13/falluja-cancer-children-birth-defects" class="external" target="_blank">estimates revealed by the Guardian of a major, unexplained rise in cancers and chronic neural-tube, cardiac and skeletal defects in newborns</a>. The authors found that malformations are close to 11 times higher than normal rates, and rose to unprecedented levels in the first half of this year – a period that had not been surveyed in earlier reports.</p> <p>The findings, which will be published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, come prior to a much-anticipated World Health Organisation study of Falluja’s genetic health. And, no, it’s not just "a few bad apples". </p> <p>"<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130124025420/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_apples_excuse" target="_blank" class="external">A few bad apples</a>" is a comforting lie that people like to tell themselves. I understand <em>why</em> some people might want to lie to themselves by saying that "it’s just a few bad apples" but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is still a lie and that those telling it , even if it is only to themselves, are still liars. Nobody ever solved a problem by refusing to admit that there was a problem in the first place. It’s definitely not just "a few bad apples". From what I and other Gorilla’s Guides team members have seen day in day out for years I would have to contend that the organisational culture of the American armed forces make death squads and other warcrimes inevitable. To use another food related proverb "fish rot from the head down". </p> <p>For as long as Americans continue to believe that their country is "the shining city on the hill" that they are the "good guys" and are entitled to do "whatever it takes" this sort of barbarity will take place and Americans, <em>all of them</em> will   be associated with it in the minds of Muslims throughout the world. These attrocities are being committed by <em>American</em> troops, who come from <em>American</em> society, with <em>American</em> values and attitudes, amd who have been trained and indoctrinated <em>in America</em> by <em>other American soldiers.</em> The current wave of Islamophobia in America merely serves to underline to Muslims the world over that their suspicion that the soldier who actively demonstrates his hatred for "rag heads" and "muzzies" and "sand niggers" is just being a typical American is correct. That their suspicion that he is doing what other Americans would do if they had the chance is correct. And that the underlying attitude in America towards them is now and always has been that:</p> <blockquote><p>“The only thing these sand niggers understand is force and I’m about to introduce them to it.”</p> </blockquote> <p>Unfortunately they have good reason for their suspicion, and that suspicion is spreading. border="0"/></a>قالت صحيفة بريطانية  ان وزارة الدفاع البريطانية التي تعاني نقصاً في السيولة المادية تواجه احتمال دفعها تعويضات لمئات العراقيين الذين تم اعتقالهم على يد الجيش البريطاني وتعرضوا لسوء المعاملة . </p> <p>وذكرت صحيفة التايمز البريطانية على موقعها الالكتروني امس ان وزارة الدفاع سبق ودفعت ملايين الجنيهات كتعويضات لضحايا الاعتداء الجسدي والجنسي وسوء المعاملة من العراقيين اثر احتجازهم في المناطق التي تواجد فيها الجيش البريطاني بين عامي 2003 و2009 جنوبي العراق. وذكرت ان عائلة العراقي بهاء موسى الذي توفي في الحجز البريطاني عام 2003 حصلت على تعويض مقداره 2.83 مليون جنيه إسترليني تشاركته مع تسعة محتجزين آخرين، والتي اظهر التحقيق في وفاته أدلة تؤكد أساءة معاملة المعتقلين بشكل غير قانوني . وأشارت الصحيفة الى ان وزارة الدفاع اعترفت عام 2008 بحدوث عمليات اعتداء غير قانونية على عراقيين محتجزين في أحدى قواعدها في البصرة اشارة منها لمعسكر "بريد باسكت". وقال محامي بعض المعتقلين العراقيين انه حصلت زيادة في عدد القضايا المقدمة لمكتب المحاماة الذي يقوم بتمثيل نحو 100 عراقي ممن رفعوا دعاوى ضد وزارة الدفاع بتهم إساءة الجيش البريطاني لمعاملتهم خلال الاحتجاز،مشيرين الى ان عدد القضايا والحالات المقدمة سترتفع بلا شك، ونقلت عن أعضاء شركة بريطانية أخرى للمحاماة، تقوم بتمثيل 65 شخصاً قولهم " ان الدعاوى المماثلة ستشهد ارتفاعاً كبيراً". وأوضحت الصحيفة انه تم الكشف عن الانتهاكات سيئة السمعة التي تعرض اليها المعتقلون العراقيون في معسكر "بريد باسكت" في البصرة والتي بينت عبر شهادات المعتقلين انهم تعرضوا للاعتداء الجنسي من قبل الجنود وأدت الى تعرضهم للنبذ من قبل المجتمع بعد الافراج عنهم . ونقلت التايمز عن احد العراقيين الذي اعتقل في المعسكر المذكور عام 2003 والذي حصل على تعويض من وزارة الدفاع البريطانية، قوله انه تم تجريده من ملابسه الداخلية وتعرض للضرب واجبر على الجلوس في الخارج وظهره الى الجدار في الحر الشديد مدة خمس ساعات بدون ماء. وأضاف ان " المشكلة الرئيسة التي دمرت سمعتي ان الناس في منطقتي عندما سمعوا بأني اعتقلت من قبل الجيش البريطاني اعتقدوا بأني تعرضت للإساءةوالاعتداء الجنسي من قبل العاملين مع الجيش البريطاني.وأوضح المعتقل انه بعد ذكر ما تعرض اليه للسلطات البريطانية طُلب منه النظر الى ألبوم صور يحتوي على صور فوتغرافية لمعتقلين آخرين، وقال" شاهدت صور لأصدقائي يتعرضون للإساءة من قبل القوات البريطانية حيث كانوا معلقين رأساً على عقب وهم عراة ويتم الاعتداء عليهم جنسياً". ورفضت وزارة الدفاع التعليق على هذه القضية لتسويتها خارج المحكمة . وقالت الصحيفة ان معتقلا آخرا في المعسكر المذكور يبلغ من العمر " 25 عاماً" أنفجر باكياً وهو يسرد كيفية أعتداء جنديين بريطانيين عليه جنسياً وضربهم اياه وتهديده بالقتل مبيناً آثار الندوب التي غطت ذراعيه لمراسل الصحيفة. وقال " بعد ذلك بدأت حياتي التي أصبحت جحيماً مليئة بالكوارث".مبينة انه اضطر لمغادرة البصرة بعد هذه الفضيحة، وتزوج عام 2005 ورزق بابنتين، لكنه بسبب العار الذي لحقه جراء الاعتداء عليه انفصل عن زوجته، وعبرعن أمله بأن يتم مقاضاة جميع المسؤولين والمدانين بارتكاب هذه الجرائم امام الشعب العراقي. وفي آذار الماضي أعلنت وزارة الدفاع البريطانية عن إنشاء فريق للتحقيق في تعرض عراقيين الى الاساءة من قبل افراد الجيش البريطاني، وقال متحدث باسم الدفاع انه من المرجح استغرق هذا التحقيق العامين و سيتم تناول القضايا المرفوعة من قبل weapons linked to an upsurge in child deformity cases in Iraq, are being investigated by the Ministry of Defence.</p> <p>The case raises serious questions about the UK’s role in the American-led offensive against the city of Fallujah in the autumn of 2004 where hundreds of Iraqis died. Doctors and residents in the city are convinced that many more children than usual are being born with deformities. So great is the concern that some doctors are apparently advising mothers living in the city not to have children. If this is indeed the case the problem could hardly be more serious. </p> <p>Something has to be done to resolve the issue. It is far from clear if there is a real increase in birth deformities or whether it is a case of more cases being recorded. An answer to this could come by comparing records for births before and after the attacks on Fallujah. For this to be an effective approach full recording of all births would be needed over an extended period. </p> <p>Another approach is that announced by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on 1 April which is to analyse the trend in birth defects in Fallujah and to compare it with other parts of Iraq. Again good records are required. The comparison may indicate there are problems elsewhere, but it may also find no disturbing trend. </p> <p>What the WHO will be assessing will be the effects of war on a civilian population, and more particularly what effect a war has on birth outcomes. The investigation is unique and very welcome. </p> <p>The details of how the investigation is to be conducted are not yet known. If the approach is just to compare trends in birth defects in different locations in Iraq it may not identify causes of these. A more detailed approach would be the logical next step. But if there is no evidence of deformities being greater than the norm why do a more searching inquiry? </p> <p>But this is jumping the gun. Fallujah has been in the headlines because of the savagery of the fighting there in 2004. US forces used white phosphorus there in November of that year. Allegations have also been made that the US used depleted uranium munitions. It is essential the US says what was used by its forces. </p> <p>I am not aware of any evidence to suggest white phosphorus or depleted uranium has been linked with birth deformities. However, a toxicologist’s reassurance will not be enough for residents in Fallujah and they deserve more. This WHO investigation will help to explain what effects war has on birth outcomes and that has to be a small comfort for clinicians and their patients in Fallujah. </p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130124025420/http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/alastair-hay-it-is-vital-america-discloses-what-weapons-were-deployed-1961474.html" class="external" target="_blank">Alastair Hay: It is vital America discloses what weapons were deployed – Commentators, Opinion – The Independent</a></p> </p></div> <p>Iraqi families who believe their children’s deformities are caused by the deployment of the weapons have now begun legal proceedings against the UK Government. They accuse the UK Government of breaching international law, war crimes and failing to intervene to prevent a war crime.</p> <p>Lawyers for the Iraqis have sent a letter before action to the MoD asking the Government to disclose what it knows about the Army’s role in the offensive, the presence of prohibited weapons and the legal advice given to Tony Blair, Prime Minister at the time.</p> <p>Legal actions against America are blocked by US federal immunity laws and the US government’s boycott of the International Criminal Court.</p> <p>The offensive against Fallujah, codenamed Phantom Fury, in 2004 was described as the most bitter fighting experienced by American soldiers since the war in Vietnam. But US forces were assisted by British units.</p> <p>On 21 October, British soldiers were ordered by the Cabinet to help US forces throw a "ring of steel" around Fallujah. Six days later, a British battle group of 850 troops made up of the armoured infantry from the 1st Battalion, The Black Watch, an armoured reconnaissance squadron from the Queen’s Dragoon Guards, elements of 40 Commando Royal Marines and supporting specialists including Royal Engineers and Royal Military Police were redeployed from Basra. </p> <p>The battle group established a base at Camp Dogwood on the eastern approach to Fallujah where they provided essential aid and assistance to the subsequent attacks on the city.</p> <p>Before the attack the former Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith is alleged to have warned Mr Blair about the legal dangers of committing British forces to the attack. </p> <p>Public Interest Lawyers, the law firm representing the Iraqi families, wants the Government to release this advice in full and say whether any British soldiers were involved in the fighting or supplied or helped fire prohibited weapons. During the attack coalition forces are alleged to have used weapons including white phosphorus, a modern form of napalm, and depleted uranium.</p> <p>The World Health Organisation has begun investigating evidence of a worrying rise in the incidence of birth defects in the city, which Iraqi doctors attribute to the use of chemical weapons during the battle. </p> <p>Malak Hamdan, a British Iraqi researcher working with doctors in Fallujah, told The Independent: "Doctors in Fallujah are witnessing unprecedented numbers of birth defects, miscarriages and cancer cases. Now, according to gynaecologists, paediatricians and neurologists in Fallujah, the numbers of these cases have been increasing rapidly since 2005." </p> <p>She explained that the most common birth defects involve the heart and the nervous system but there have also been reported cases of babies being born with two heads, upper and lower limb defects and eye abnormalities.</p> <p>"What is more disturbing is that pregnant women are completely unaware that they are carrying an abnormal child until the day they give birth – traumatising the mother and the rest of the family," said Ms Malak. </p> <p>Mazin Younis, a UK-based Iraqi human rights activist who visited the city before the attack, said: "When I visited Fallujah a few weeks before the attack, I was shocked to see the majority of people had not left the city. Many of them had no one to go to…. We attacked this city ruthlessly without any concern for the fate of tens of thousands of civilians who were still living there. The unlawful use of white phosphorus in built-up areas was… never objected to by the British Government who assisted in the attack on Fallujah."</p> <p>Phil Shiner, the UK lawyer leading the legal challenge, said: "The rate and severity of both foetal abnormalities and inexplicable illnesses such as leukaemia or those suffered by our clients in infants born to mothers in Fallujah has been the subject of numerous reports and letters to governments…. The full extent of the emerging public health crisis is unknown…. Doctors report a "massive, unprecedented number" of congenital health problems. The BBC investigation found that the incidence of birth defects in Fallujah has reached a rate 13 times higher than in Europe."</p> <p>An MoD spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that we are in receipt of this letter from Public Interest Lawyers and will respond in due course. But many Iraq war veterans feel it is too little, too late. </p> <p><a title="collateral_murder_namir_with_camera" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130124025420/http://www.flickr.com/photos/27086036@N02/4532012332/" class="external" target="_blank"></a></p> <p>Sunday 18 April 2010 <br/><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130124025420/http://dahrjamailiraq.com/" target="_blank">Dahr Jamail</a></p> </p></div> <p>In contrast to most of the coverage that favours the military’s stated position of forgiving the soldiers responsible and citing that they followed the rules of engagement, Iraq war veterans who have spoken to the media previously about atrocities carried out against innocent Iraqis have largely been ignored by the mainstream US media. </p> <p>This includes Josh Steiber – a former US army specialist who was a member of the Bravo Company 2-16, whose acts of brutality made headlines with the release on website WikiLeaks of the 2007 footage. </p> <p>Steiber says that such acts were "not isolated incidents" and were "common" during his tour of duty. </p> <p>"After watching the video, I would definitely say that that is, nine times out of 10, the way things ended up," Steiber says. "Killing was following military protocol. It was going along with the rules as they are." </p> <p>Steiber was not with his unit, who were the soldiers on the ground in the video, when the incident occurred. He was back at his base. </p> <p>While not absolving of responsibility those who carried out the killing, Steiber blames the US military, specifically how soldiers are trained to dehumanise Iraqis, and the rules of engagement. </p> <p>"We have to address the larger system that trains people to respond in this way, or the same thing will probably happen again," Steiber says. </p> <p>However he explains that, during his basic training for the military, "We watched videos celebrating death," and he says that his leaders would "pull aside soldiers who’d not deployed, and ask us if somebody open fired on us in a market full of unarmed civilians, would we return fire. And if you didn’t say Yes instantly, you got yelled at for not being a good soldier. The mindset of military training was one based on fear, and the ability to eliminate any threat." </p> <p>Steiber was released from the military as a conscientious objector and is now a member of the group Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). </p> <p>"I saw many instances, frequently, of the military killing civilians," Steiber adds. "One thing we were told was that if a roadside bomb went off, anybody in the area was considered an enemy. Obviously those are innocent civilians since most of them, if not all of them, are not involved with the bombing. So I would consider those innocent civilians as lives lost. That policy came down from high up." </p> <p>When asked how many times this happened with his unit, Steiber says: "Between five and 10 times, and each time we’d end up killing people." </p> <p>IVAW sponsored the Winter Soldier hearings that took place March 13-16 2008 in Silver Spring, Maryland. The hearings provided a platform for veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan to share the reality of their occupation experiences with the media. </p> <p>While the hearings garnered major coverage from foreign media outlets, they were ignored by mainstream US media outlets. This censorship is reflective of an overarching censorship by the mainstream media in the US of veterans from both occupations who have tried to tell their stories to the public. </p> <p>Garret Reppenhagen, who testified at the Winter Soldier hearings, served in Iraq from February 2004-5 in the city of Baquba about 25 miles north-east of Baghdad. </p> <p>"There are so many incidents like this that happen in Iraq it’s bound that eventually one of them hits the vein of public attention, like this one," Reppenhagen says of the WikiLeaks footage. </p> <p>"Film helps – like this, and Abu Ghraib – the video and film documentation helps spur public attention. So it’s sad that these instances happen and they are occurring and it has to do with how we conduct ourselves in this conflict – clearly there are things that need to be done for soldiers to adhere to the Geneva Conventions." </p> <p>Reppenhagen doubts that the media uproar caused by the leaked video will change how soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan conduct themselves. </p> <p>"I still doubt enough support will be garnered to change how we operate in theatre. Eventually I hope there’ll be a critical mass of people coming out and telling their stories about these things." </p> <p>Two of the Iraqis shown being murdered in the WikiLeaks video were employees of the Reuters news agency – photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen and driver Saeed Chmagh. </p> <p>While most mainstream media in the US have reported the Pentagon’s statements saying that two internal investigations had cleared the soldiers of any wrongdoing and that they had been following the rules of engagement, international media like Al-Jazeera English have reported on reactions from the families of the victims of the attack. </p> <p>The families of the slain Iraqi civilians are seeking justice for the deaths and want the military personnel responsible for the deaths to be taken to court. </p> <p>Two young children whose father was killed in the attack could not understand why they had been targeted. </p> <p>"We were coming back and we saw an injured man," said Sajad Mutashar, whose father was killed in the attack while he and his sister were wounded. "My father said: ‘Let’s take him to hospital.’ Then I heard only the bullets … Why did they shoot us? Didn’t they see we were children?" </p> <p>His uncle Satar is demanding that the pilot is taken to court. "Nobody gave the children anything, their rights are gone and the Americans didn’t even compensate for the destroyed car. I sold it for $500 to spend the money treating them," Satar told Al-Jazeera. </p> <p>Chamgh’s family is also demanding justice for his death. </p> <p>"The pilot is not human, he’s a monster," brother Safa Chmagh said. "What did my brother do? What did his children do? Does the pilot accept his kids to be orphans?" </p> <p>Marjorie Cohn is a former president of the National Lawyer’s Guild, a professor of law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and co-author of the book Rules Of Disengagement: The Politics Of Honour And Military Dissent. </p> <p>"I think there’s clearly enough there to warrant an investigation," Cohn says. "I’m distraught and disappointed that the US government refuses to launch an investigation about whether or not there’ve been violations of the law." </p> <p>Cohn cites three possible violations. "What I thought after watching the video, is that it looks like there were three possible violations of the Geneva Conventions. There were civilians standing around, there was no-one firing at the US soldiers, and at least two people with cameras … there may have been people armed, like there are many people armed in the US, but this does not create the licence to fire on people. That’s one violation of the Geneva Conventions – targeting people who are not a military necessity who do not pose a threat." </p> <p>Cohn says that the second and third possible violation of the laws of war are evident in a scene on the tape where a van attempts to rescue the wounded and a later scene of a US tank rolling over a body on the ground. </p> <p>"The soldiers shot him and those in the van, another possible violation of the Geneva Conventions – preventing the rescuers," she says. "Third, when the wounded or dead man was lying on the ground, and a US tank rolled over him, effectively splitting him in two. If he was dead, that was disrespecting a body – another violation of the Geneva Conventions." </p> <p>In the scene, which occurs about 19 minutes into the full version of the WikiLeaks video, a soldier is heard saying: "I think they just drove over a body." Another soldier is heard laughing before he responds: "Really?" </p> <p>Shortly afterwards a soldier is heard saying: "Well, they’re dead, so." </p> <p>Cohn concludes: "So I see several possible violations, certainly enough to warrant an investigation by the US military." </p> <p><a
