He was five<MH2568> years<MH8141> old<MH1121> when the news<MH8052> of Saul<MH7586> and Jonathan<MH3083> came<MH935> from Jezreel<MH3157>, and his nurse<MH539> picked<MH5375> him up<MH5375> and fled<MH5127>. But it happened<MH1961> that in her hurry<MH2648> to flee<MH5127>, he fell<MH5307> and could<MH6452b> no<MH6452b> longer<MH6452b> walk<MH6452b>. And his name<MH8034> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Mephibosheth<MH4648>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So the sons<MH1121> of Rimmon<MH7417b> the Beerothite<MH886>, Rechab<MH7394> and Baanah<MH1196>, departed<MH1980> and came<MH935> to the house<MH1004> of Ish-bosheth<MH378> in the heat<MH2527> of the day<MH3117>, while he was taking<MH7901> his midday<MH6672a> rest<MH4904>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>And they came<MH935> to the interior<MH8432> of the house<MH1004> <i>as if</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>to get<MH3947> wheat<MH2406>, and they struck<MH5221> him in the belly<MH2570>; and Rechab<MH7394> and his brother<MH251> Baanah<MH1196> escaped<MH4422>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now when they had come<MH935> into the house<MH1004>, as he was lying<MH7901> on his bed<MH4296> in his bedroom<MH2315, 4904>, they struck<MH5221> him and killed<MH4191> him, and they beheaded<MH5493, 7218> him. And they took<MH3947> his head<MH7218> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>traveled<MH1980> by way<MH1870> of the Arabah<MH6160> all<MH3605> night<MH3915>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then they brought<MH935> the head<MH7218> of Ish-bosheth<MH378> to David<MH1732> at Hebron<MH2275a>, and said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, “Behold<MH2009>, the head<MH7218> of Ish-bosheth<MH378> the son<MH1121> of Saul<MH7586>, your enemy<MH340>, who<MH834> sought<MH1245> your life<MH5315>; so the LORD<MH3068> has given<MH5414> my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> vengeance<MH5360> this<MH2088> day<MH3117> on Saul<MH7586> and his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>descendants<MH2233>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But David<MH1732> replied<MH6030a> to Rechab<MH7394> and his brother<MH251> Baanah<MH1196>, sons<MH1121> of Rimmon<MH7417b> the Beerothite<MH886>, and said<MH559> to them, “As the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, who<MH834> has redeemed<MH6299> my life<MH5315> from all<MH3605> distress<MH6869a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>when<MH3588> the one who informed<MH5046> me, saying<MH559>, ‘Behold<MH2009>, Saul<MH7586> is dead<MH4191>,’ also <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>viewed<MH5869> himself<MH1931> as the bearer<MH1319> of<MH1319> good<MH1319> news<MH1319>, I seized<MH270> him and killed<MH2026> him in Ziklag<MH6860>, which<MH834> was the reward<MH1309> I gave<MH5414> him for<MH1309> <i>his</i> news<MH1309>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>How<MH637> much<MH637, 3588> more<MH637, 3588>, when<MH3588> wicked<MH7563> men<MH376> have killed<MH2026> a righteous<MH6662> man<MH376> in his <i>own</i> house<MH1004> on his bed<MH4904>, shall I not now<MH6258> require<MH1245> his blood<MH1818> from your hands<MH3027> and eliminate<MH1197a> you <i>both</i> from the earth<MH776>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> commanded<MH6680> the young<MH5288> men<MH5288>, and they killed<MH2026> them and cut<MH7112> off<MH7112> their hands<MH3027> and feet<MH7272>, and hung<MH8518> them up<MH8518> beside<MH5921> the pool<MH1295> in Hebron<MH2275a>.
