The point of the summit was to think about membership at news organizations well beyond subscriptions and to really expand the idea of what membership programs could look like. As Jeff Jarvis said in his opening remarks, “Membership is not just about revenue — it’s about resetting the relationships we have with our public.”</p> <p>I think <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.niemanlab.org/2015/07/putting-the-public-into-public-media-membership/">a lot about membership</a>, particularly as it relates to building communities, and I thought I would share some of the most interesting takeaways from the Summit, since my head has been swirling with ideas for the past week — and most of the projects I learned about didn’t come from inside the news business.</p> <p><strong>1. From Kickstarter,</strong> I learned that experiential rewards are just as exciting to people as physical ones. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/371231/what-harley-davidson-can-teach-us-about-membership/" class="read-more">Read more</a></p></div> <div class="breadcrumbs"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/" title="View all posts in News">News</a> <span class="arrow-right">→</span> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/media-innovation/" title="View all posts in Media Innovation">Media Innovation</a></div> <dl class="article-tools"> <dt>Tools:</dt> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/371231/what-harley-davidson-can-teach-us-about-membership/#disqus_thread" class="comments"><span class="dsq-postid" rel="371231 http://www.poynter.org/?p=371231">0 Comments</span></a></dd> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/371231/what-harley-davidson-can-teach-us-about-membership/" class="permalink">Permalink</a></dd> <dd><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --> <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "> <a class="addthis_button_email" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/371231/what-harley-davidson-can-teach-us-about-membership/" addthis:title="What Harley-Davidson can teach us about membership">Email</a> <a class="addthis_button_compact" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/371231/what-harley-davidson-can-teach-us-about-membership/" addthis:title="What Harley-Davidson can teach us about membership">Share</a> </div> <script type="text/javascript" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016js_/http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#username=xa-4ccb31260be55b75"></script> <!-- AddThis Button END --></dd> </dl> </div> </div> <div id="acm_ad_zones-11" class="widget acm_ad_zones"> <div id="acm-ad-tag-1426872050403-5" style="width:728px; height:90px;"> <script type="text/javascript"> googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('acm-ad-tag-1426872050403-5'); }); </script> </div> </div><h3 class="edition">Thursday, Sep. 03, 2015</h3> <div id="post-371052" class="entry-content post-feature-secondary excerpt-1"> <div class="article excerpt"> <div class="image-right"><img width="160" height="102" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016im_/http://www.poynter.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/slackfeatured-160x102.jpg" class="attachment-article-medium wp-post-image" alt="slackfeatured"/></div> <h2 class="article"> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/?post_type=post&p=371052" title="Permalink to The Slack bot trend continues, this time with Al Jazeera English" rel="bookmark">The Slack bot trend continues, this time with Al Jazeera English</a> </h2> <p class="article-meta"> <span class="meta-byline"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/author/gurman-bhatia/" title="Posts by Gurman Bhatia" rel="author">Gurman Bhatia</a></span> <span class="meta-datetime"> <span class="meta-date">Sep. 3, 2015</span> <span class="meta-time">1:56 pm</span> </span> </p> <div class="excerpt"><p>When the Virginia shooting happened last week, the staff at Al Jazeera English didn’t get the news from a wire service. secured a location, a store-front art gallery located only blocks from the dress shops, and set up an audio and visual exhibit, which featured 16 portraits and scenic images, accompanied by eight oral vignettes and displays of traditional Bangladeshi wear. <a persists with traditional and online publishers: nice audience growth, sluggish revenues.</p> <p>“News and information outlets ranging from the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal to Business Insider and About.com all can point to rapid growth in mobile usage,” The Wall Street Journal writes Monday. “Time spent on publishers’ mobile offerings jumped 40% in the 12 months through July and now accounts for 55% of total time spent on their properties, up from 42% two years ago, according to estimates by measurement specialist comScore.”</p> <p>But reports, earnings calls and interviews all underscore how “revenue isn’t keeping pace—by a long shot—creating what industry executives are calling a ‘mobile gap.’”</p> <p>The act of hawking ads on mobile devices is no simple task. <a The concept was born out of a conversation during a work trip. It was the kind of idea that seems interesting but would require a lot of work, the type that often gets thrown around and rarely sees follow-through.</p> <p>But this idea was different. It was something I couldn’t shake.</p> <p>I worked at CNN for seven years, from 2007 to 2014, and watched morale rise and fall during that time. I listened to seemingly endless complaints from colleagues and did more than my fair share of complaining. I struggled with growing amounts of work and stress. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/367599/fun-at-work-its-tougher-than-it-looks/" class="read-more">Read more</a></p></div> <div class="breadcrumbs"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/" title="View all posts in News">News</a> <span class="arrow-right">→</span> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/category/news/media-innovation/" title="View all posts in Media Innovation">Media Innovation</a></div> <dl class="article-tools"> <dt>Tools:</dt> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/367599/fun-at-work-its-tougher-than-it-looks/#disqus_thread" class="comments"><span class="dsq-postid" rel="367599 http://www.poynter.org/?p=367599">0 Comments</span></a></dd> <dd><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905160016/http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/367599/fun-at-work-its-tougher-than-it-looks/" class="permalink">Permalink</a></dd> <dd><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --> <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "> <a class="addthis_button_email" addthis:url="http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/367599/fun-at-work-its-tougher-than-it-looks/" addthis:title="Fun at work?
