Congratulations to Karin for being named one of 50 most influential women in tech in The Netherlands!

Job title: Senior Director Technology

Karin is responsible for the technology team who are building Mendeley Data, which is Elsevier’s platform to support research data management. Karin and her team are using technology to transform the way that researchers collaborate and work together to spark discovery and support innovative interdisciplinary thinking.

Before joining Elsevier, Karin was a Technology Director with eBay Classifieds Group heading up core capability technology platforms on a global basis challenging how they respond to mobile wave as an organization and has held technology leadership roles at companies across a range of industries.

When did you join Mendeley?

I joined in June 2018

What do you love most about your job?

I gain energy from making a positive difference – and every time we talk to our customers, I see that the tools and services we are providing are helping them to be more successful. And a successful researcher is a researcher who is changing the world we live in. It’s great to be able to see real change happening as a result of what we build.

What book did you most recently read?

I most recently finished Jodi Taylor’s Hope for the Best. I usually have 2-3 books on the go at any one point in time – I am also reading Mary Beard’s Women & Power – but aim to always have something lighthearted and relaxing to wind down with at bed time.

What’s one thing you want people to know about Mendeley?

That we would love feedback on how to make Mendeley the most effective tool for them. It is really energizing when people reach out and give us feedback on how we can make our product better.

How would you explain your job to a stranger on a bus?

I make tools to help researchers crack their codes

What’s the most exciting part of your job?

The people – definitively the people! We have a team that’s passionate about what we are building, and we work with amazing researchers and thought leaders in our community.

What keeps you awake at night?

I tend to sleep quite soundly – but sometimes I do get woken up by a nocturnal member of my family. Sometimes it is a Great Dane who has decided to wake me for a midnight stroll and sometimes it is one of the cats proudly presenting their latest ‘gift’ with accompanying commentary on their night hunting prowess.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned this week?

That’s a tough question! I try and keep up with new research in a few fields that interest me: there’s some fascinating new science showing just how far back man has been impacting weather patterns and creating global warming; showing the impact of diet/gut on health and how loss of hippos from riverine areas in Africa is impacting downstream in the health of the ecosystem.

Show your love for #MyMendeley!

February 25, 2019February 25, 2019 Rachel Brennesholtz

As Mendeley Advisors, you do a great job speaking to the researcher community on your campus about the benefits of using Mendeley. To be honest, we profiled the team in three parts, with the API team taking the lead back in August.

Why is the team so big? Because all those lines of code translate into giving Mendeley the base it needs for all of the features that make Mendeley what it is today.

Read through their individual bios and find out how the Platform team helps every single team at Mendeley.

Richard Lyne

Senior Software Engineer

Richard originally studied Physics with Space Science at UCL before falling into programming as a career.

Mendeley has broken his track record of always working at acronyms.

How do you describe your role on the Platform Team?

I’m a software engineer and have worked on a number of projects from the data-pipeline, the recommender, and the API. This is pretty much the gold standard that everybody’s aiming for, with everything automated from commit through to deployment, scaling and monitoring.

What is your favourite part about working for Mendeley?

It’s a great team — there’s a really good vibe and it’s actually a nice feeling to come in to the office every day. My team-mates are all extremely talented, and there’s always someone able to help out when things get tricky.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I learnt to scuba dive last year so I’ve used all my leave so far (and possibly some karma too) to go diving in Malta and Thailand. A manta ray gliding over your head, almost within reach, is really special feeling.

Ed Ingold

Software Engineer

Ed is a former Anthropology student who realised paid employment was both inevitable and desirable. “Now I code. Generally not horribly,” he said.

How do you describe your role on the Platform Team?

Processing a lot of data and working out which researchers should be collaborating.

What is your favourite part about working for Mendeley?

I have fun playing around with various shiny bits of technology. Also, it’s an indoor job with no heavy lifting. In 2009, he decided to move to London for a change of scenery. Six years later, he’s still here and have had a number of jobs, largely doing back-end Java development in a number of domains including real estate, broadcasting, and finance.

How do you describe your role on the Platform Team?

I work on the services that power the various APIs used by Mendeley applications and third parties.

What is your favourite part about working for Mendeley?

Working on diverse problems, with a team that is serious about continual improvement, on software that is used and found useful by a growing number of people.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Having a pint in a London pub; occasionally playing a guitar or piano (badly); playing with radio controlled things that fly.

Piyush Bedi

Software Engineer

Forged on the sandy hot beaches of Australia sometime in the 80s, Piyush is from a bygone era when it didn’t matter how big your data was. He mysteriously ended up on the other side of the world and must now practice as a Software Engineer to make his way back. Follow him on Twitter @grimyetcheerful

How do you describe your role on the Platform Team?

I work with an intelligent team to build our internal and external software platform. This means developing RESTful services, APIs and map reduce jobs, so other people can interact with our awesome services and vast ocean of data.” When I feel homesick, I use that time to shoot down bugs (in our code).

What is your favourite part about working for Mendeley?

The amazing speed at which we can go from an idea in our heads to operational code for other people. I’ve worked in a lot of places, but Mendeley has one of the most agile environments I’ve ever had the privilege to work in. There are many ways we achieve this, but our developer portal throws opens the Mendeley platform for developers to create and build tools to make researchers’ lives easier using Application Programming Interfaces — known as APIs. It is thanks to the Mendeley API that some of your favorite Mendeley third-party apps exist, like KinSync, PaperShip and Scholarley, to name a few. Even higher education is getting into the API game.

And now our API website has a fresh new look and a beta release. The team is currently working with a technical writer to improve the documentation, and are also busy trying to get SDKs out for mobile and other languages for a major release sometime later this year.

Think you’re ready to hack?
