It is celebrated during March in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, corresponding with International Women's Day on March 8. The commemoration began in 1978 as "Women's History day" in Sonoma County, California, and was championed by Gerda Lerner and the National Women's History Alliance to be recognized as a national week (1980) and then month (1987) in the United States, spreading internationally after that.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Shortly after, state departments of education also began to encourage celebrations of Women's History Month as a way to promote equality in the classroom. Maryland, Pennsylvania, Alaska, New York, Oregon, and other states developed and distributed curriculum materials in all of their public schools, which prompted educational events such as essay contests. Within a few years, thousands of schools and communities began to celebrate of Women's History Month, planning engaging and stimulating programs about women's roles in history and society, with support and encouragement from governors, city councils, school boards, and the U.S. Congress.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">In alignment with Neo’s ongoing diversity, equity, inclusion & belonging (DEI&B) initiatives and 2022 Focus Core Pillar of Purpose-Driven Culture, this month we are celebrating and elevating awareness for Women’s History Month. As an important part of Neo’s Purpose-Driven culture, we are excited to expand our inclusive and effective leadership this year by continuing to build Neo’s culture of inclusion and developing our future leaders.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Currently, on the Neo team, over 60% of employees are female, and more than 56% of women at Neo are in supervisory roles. Specifically, among MD & PhD doctors at Neo, more than half of this population are women. However, this is dramatically different among other organizations. According to Catalyst, a global nonprofit that works with companies to build workplaces that work for women, in the United States, while women made up nearly half of the labor force, only 40.3% of managers were women in 2021. Also according to Catalyst, globally, 31% of senior management roles were held by women in 2021, which is actually the highest number ever on record.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">One way in which NeoGenomics continues to support women in the workplace is through the Women@ Neo Employee Resource Group (ERG). Women@ is comprised of women and women allies—all employees are welcome to join—who are committed to elevating women across the organization and within their communities, headed by chair Helen Edenfield, Global Director, Facilities & Operations Excellence. Additionally, 1 in 17 employees at NeoGenomics are in the ERG, providing a wide representation across departments, locations, and job titles. The group meets on a monthly basis (watch for calendar invites!) and even hosts a recurring book club. You do not need to join the ERG to attend book club meetings.In celebration of Women’s History Month, the ERG debuted a Women’s History Month video series, featuring women@ members.
