In the context of the parable, the nobleman represents Jesus, and the subjects symbolize those who reject His kingship. This mirrors the historical rejection of Jesus by many of the Jewish leaders and people during His earthly ministry (<a href="/john/1-11.htm">John 1:11</a>).
