You can also choose to make a traditional unrestricted donation as well. The Mozilla Foundation will take note of your choice, and keep track of how much money has been designated for each project. They will then work with the people responsible for each project and come up with some worthy project-related initiatives to fund using those designated donations.

As an extra incentive to help get the program started, the Mozilla Foundation will match 2-for-1 any donations you designate for these projects from now until the end of 2007, up to a maximum of $10,000 per project. Proto represents the first phase of the new Mac theme work, driving towards a more native look and feel on that platform. The second phase will be modifying Proto to include a cross-platform shape and control set which will differentiate Firefox from other applications. The end goal should be an OS X native feeling browser that also definitely feels like Firefox. If you install the Proto add-on, you’ll get updates as new versions of the theme are available. Early in the development cycle for each release we’ve set goals for memory and performance. We always set our bar under the previous release.” It’s a great read that talks about the project, the challenges faced, and some of the strategies we’re using.

Extend Firefox 2 add-on contest

Everyone knows that one of the best things about Firefox is that you can customize it to do what you want, how you want. You may have been redirected here while looking for the Firefox 3 Beta. We’re sad to say that it’s not actually ready yet, but we’re awfully happy that you stopped by. Read on for more details!)

At around 4am PST today, the last of the Firefox 3 Beta 1 release candidate builds appeared on our public FTP. This was mistakenly reported on Digg as the official release of the first Firefox 3 Beta. It’s extremely flattering to get this sort of attention, and we know that it’s motivated by the very best of intentions, but it does cause us three major problems:

The release candidate builds have not been thoroughly tested by our QA group,

we haven’t completed all the steps required for a beta release (see below), and

these builds aren’t being mirrored properly on our servers.

Before a release candidate is released to the public we let our Quality Assurance team put it through a bunch of tests (if you’d like to participate in this activity, by the way, you’re absolutely welcome to join our Firefox Beta Test Day on Friday), write release notes, and put together a page that appears when someone first runs the beta to help them understand what’s new and how they can give us their feedback. At the same time, our localization teams make the final translation fixes, and our build team generates versions in as many languages as we have ready to go. The final step is to “sign” the builds digitally, authenticating that they came from Mozilla.

So, if all this needs to be done before a release candidate can actually be handed out to users, why do we put these “release candidate” builds on a public server? Well, because we’re an open source project, and we put all of our builds on public servers.

For now, we’ve restricted access to the builds by HTTP, meaning that if you click the link in Digg, you’ll see this page instead of the builds. We’ve done this to protect our own bandwidth, and also to limit the distribution of what’s essentially an unfinished product. People can still use FTP clients to get the release candidates, and if they want to help QA test the beta, we encourage people to do so! If not, however, we’d ask you to wait another week or so, at which point we expect to have the final beta release available for public consumption.

Stay tuned for more detailed timelines and estimates for the official release date of Firefox 3 Beta 1, which should appear here a little later today.

Posted November 7th, 2007 by beltzner in General | No Comments »

Firefox 2.0.0.9 stability update now available for download

As part of Mozilla Corporation’s ongoing stability and security update process, Firefox 2.0.0.9 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download from http://getfirefox.com.

We strongly recommend that all Firefox users upgrade to this latest release. If there’s a critical issue — like the existence of a known exploit in the wild — we push out an update as fast as possible.

We also publish regular maintenance releases every 6 to 8 weeks, which contain updates for greater stability and security. Great care is taken with these “dot-dot” releases to limit risk of breaking functionality, and each release is given a healthy dose of quality assurance testing as well as a period of beta testing with about 50,000 to 70,000 users in our community before being shipped to all Firefox users.

The 2.0.0.8 release fixed some 200 issues, but accidentally regressed a few things. In the meantime, the tree remains at threat level “orange” (always see the tinderbox for the current checkin rules) where only patches on blocking bugs and those with driver approval are allowed to be checked in. All contributors and drivers should be limiting risk, and testing their patches for memory leaks and regressions before committing them, then watching the tree afterwards to see the effects.

Once the new code freeze date is finalized, it will be announced on Mozilla Developer News and in the mozilla.developer.planning newsgroups. At that time we’ll also announce the date when the tree will move to threat level “red”, where all checkins must be given explicit endgame driver approval in order to limit risk of regression.

Posted October 12th, 2007 by beltzner in General | No Comments »

Keeping an eye on blockers

The number of outstanding blockers is a good way to get a feeling for how much work is left to be done before a milestone or final product release. It can be tricky to coax these numbers out of Bugzilla due to some of the more intricate ways we split things into “Gecko 1.9″ and “Firefox 3″. Building on some saved searches that have been built and shared (go into your Bugzilla preferences and click on “saved searches” to add them to your footer) by Mike Connor, here’s a set of queries which you can bookmark and keep a close watch on:

Gecko 1.9: All Blockers | Unassigned Blockers | Blocker Nominations

Firefox 3: All Blockers | Unassigned Blockers | Blocker Nominations

Specifically for M9, it might be interesting for people to have the following queries to hand:

Gecko 1.9: M9 Blockers | Unassigned M9 Blockers

Firefox 3: M9 Blockers | Unassigned M9 Blockers

With the information from those queries, you can see that…

More than 100 bugs are blocking Gran Paradiso M9, 13 of which are unassigned

Another 600 bugs are blocking the final Firefox 3 / Gecko 1.9 release, 200 of which are unassigned

There are an additional 200 bugs nominated for blocking status, mostly in Gecko 1.9 components

Monitoring these numbers will help us focus on what needs to be done for an upcoming milestone and the march towards our final product release.
