diversity of 12 university-affiliated forests located in North America, the Asia-Pacific, Europe and Latin America, highlights the need to enhance their role in global environmental sustainability and mitigating climate change, including by advancing research and innovation, enhancing educational outreach, and global collaboration and knowledge sharing.<br /> <br /> “The role of universities in addressing climate change is often discussed, but one crucial aspect tends to be overlooked: their potential contribution to carbon sequestration,” states a <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s43621-024-00590-y" target="_new">study</a> titled “University forests and carbon sequestration: An untapped potential”, published in <I>Discover Sustainability</I> on 28 October.<br /> <br /> Carbon sequestration is the process by which carbon dioxide (CO2) is stored by trees and other vegetation and thereby mitigates the effects of climate change.<br /> <br /> The study by authors* from the United Kingdom, Australia and Portugal found that many universities around the world possess significant tracts of land, often featuring substantial forested areas which represent “an under-utilised opportunity for nature-based solutions that facilitate carbon sequestration”.<br /> <br /> It states: “All around the world, there is a perceived need to preserve university forest locations to maximise their significant ecological, educational and conservation value, enhancing both the impact of research and the preservation of vital natural resources.”<br /> <br /> “While there is a body of research highlighting the general benefits of university forests, there is a gap in the literature regarding how different institutions implement and manage these spaces to maximise and reap their ecological and educational impact.”<br /> <br /> The study aimed to plug this gap by providing a comparative analysis of how different universities manage their forests; examining measures employed to balance ecological, educational and economic goals; and contributing to understanding best practices in university forest management and carbon sequestration.<br /> <br /> <b>Takeaway messages</b><br /> <br /> Co-author of the study <a href="https://walterleal.info/" target="_new">Walter Leal Filho</a>, professor of environment and technology at Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom, told <I>University World News</I> that the most important finding of the study is that “universities can play a key role in climate change mitigation using their own campus”.<br /> <br /> The 12 forests in the study belong to Harvard University and Yale University in the United States, the University of British Columbia in Canada, the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, Wageningen University in the Netherlands, the University of Freiburg in Germany, Kyoto University in Japan, the National University of Singapore, the University of Melbourne Dookie in Australia, and the University of São Paulo in Brazil, as well as Universidad Austral de Chile and Universidad Regional Amazónica Ikiam in Ecuador.<br /> <br /> Leal said the takeaway message for higher education policymakers and decision makers is: “Each university has facilities and green areas, large or small, which can plan a key role in climate change.”<br /> <br /> In a message delivered directed at the United Nations Climate Change Conference – <a href="https://unfccc.int/" target="_new">COP29</a> held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan – about simple solutions for climate mitigation impact, Leal said: “University forests can play an important role as part of larger efforts to protect carbon sinks and support climate change mitigation”.<br /> <br /> The most important actions promoting the role of university forests in mitigating climate change are “conserving and safeguarding them, so they can play their role as carbon sinks”.<br /> <br /> Leal observed: “However, not many university administrators recognise the potential of university campuses as carbon sinks.”<br /> <br /> <b>Study outcomes</b><br /> <br /> The analysis of some of the largest and most ecologically significant forests managed by academic institutions across the different world regions revealed their capacity for carbon sequestration, their biodiversity value, and their potential to contribute to global climate change mitigation efforts.<br /> <br /> It found that university forests can serve as dynamic, living laboratories for research, education and conservation, as well as spaces for community engagement. “In addition to their environmental benefits, these green spaces can enhance human health and well-being.”<br /> <br /> The study indicated that Europe offers “a compelling case for examining university forests due to the region’s rich tapestry of ecological diversity, its strong commitment to sustainability, and its history of innovative conservation efforts that demonstrate meaningful societal and environmental impacts.<br /> <br /> “European university forests serve as vital research and education hubs, addressing critical issues such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainable resource management.”<br /> <br /> <b>Recommendations for action</b><br /> <br /> Based on analysis of the geographic and management diversity of university-affiliated forests, the study put forward several recommendations for universities on how to optimise their forested lands as carbon sinks and enhance their role in advancing sustainable practices, research and education.<br /> <br /> The study said “universities should leverage the distinct ecological characteristics of their forests to tailor management practices that optimise carbon sequestration.<br /> <br /> “For instance, universities with tropical forests, with their higher sequestration potential, should prioritise conservation and restoration, while universities with temperate forests might focus more on sustainable management and biodiversity research,” the study explained.<br /> <br /> It pointed out that “fostering collaboration between universities across different regions could lead to more comprehensive approaches to forest management”.<br /> <br /> This is because each region has its own characteristics including “North America’s long-term ecological research, Europe’s focus on conservation, Asia-Pacific’s emphasis on urban integration, and South America’s use of indigenous knowledge”.<br /> <br /> Enhancing community engagement and public outreach is essential to increase the societal relevance of university forests,” said the study. “This could involve expanding educational programmes and integrating sustainable practices that align with regional priorities, further supporting local conservation efforts.<br /> <br /> Further, the study suggested: “Given the critical role university forests play in climate change research, establishing a global network for data sharing and collaborative projects could advance the understanding of ecosystem services, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration across various biomes.<br /> <br /> “This integrated approach would not only enrich academic research but also reinforce the contributions of these forests to global environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation.”<br /> <br /> Effective management strategies need to be implemented to optimise university forests’ ability to absorb and store carbon dioxide”.<br /> <br /> Besides “incorporating climate change education into curricula to foster a new generation of environmentally conscious students and researchers”, the study called for collaboration between universities, government agencies, and nonprofits to facilitate knowledge sharing, resource mobilisation, and large-scale carbon sequestration initiatives.<br /> <br /> The study indicated that universities can also develop their own carbon offset programmes by quantifying the carbon sequestered by their forests and selling carbon credits.<br /> <br /> “This not only provides a financial incentive for maintaining and expanding forested areas but also contributes to global carbon reduction efforts,” the study pointed out.<br /> <br /> The recommendations apply to all university forests. To achieve results, recommendations to conserve university forests need to be supported by strong institutional commitment and sustained leadership support.<br /> <br /> University leaders should prioritise forest conservation as part of their institutional missions, with dedicated funding, staff and long-term strategies key to ensuring the sustainability of conservation efforts.<br /> <br /> Universities should also develop and enforce conservation policies to guide day-to-day operations, said the study. “Forest conservation programmes need robust financial backing to cover restoration, monitoring, research, and sustainable forest management costs.”<br /> <br /> <b>Call for academic community action plan at COP29</b><br /> <br /> Echoing Leal’s views, Professor Hamed Ead, of the faculty of science at Cairo University in Egypt, told <I>University World News</I>: “Highlighting the importance of university forests in combatting the impact of climate change through mitigating emissions of greenhouse gases, at the time of holding COP29, sends a clear message to the academic community – especially to university presidents – to adopt the action plan outlined in the study.”<br /> <br /> The academic community must implement best practices for forest management; secure funding and partnerships with government agencies, NGOs and the private sector; enhance research and monitoring; engage the community through educational programmes, volunteer opportunities and citizen science projects; and advocate for policy support to protect forested areas from urban development and promote sustainable land-use practices.<br /> <br /> “By addressing these challenges, universities can contribute to a more sustainable future and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change
