trains and buses to meetings and events. "In the Rapids of Revolution" John MacLean works and speeches have been selected and published in the 1970's by Nan Milton, his daughter, as part of the John MacLean Society's policy to bring MacLean's work to a newer audience. Here at the SRSM we will start to make his works available to be downloaded and read as we research our archives. These works are as relevant today as they were then. Much of his works are timeless, especially his disdain of the Labour Party of the day. They are still selling out. His description of them as "Labour Fakirs" perhaps needs respelling. We have a few of his pamphlets available and some we will reprint soon. Our thanks to London researcher, Jim Clayson, for discovering yet another contemporary pamplet on John MacLean. This booklet is another nugget, in as much as he gets right to the heart of the real MacLean and traces his Scottish Workers Republican Party during and after MacLean‘s death. His agenda is the same as MacLean’s; Nan Milton, Harry McShane and a few others. Compare his honesty and forthrightness with the obvious Brit Nat agenda of the very British left “biographers” and “objective“ Brit Nat academics. His research into the SWRP made him comment that the membership consisted of poor working class members, as opposed to the middle class left of the Hyndmanites of the day. He also compared that with the SRSP membership of the time when he wrote this, who also belonged to that same class and had clear objectives that did not confuse socialism with voting for the Labour Party and the British State, as the British left still do. The British left still argue about Tories and Labour within the Great British context, whilst the SWRP and SRSP found the alleged differences not worth arguing about, as do the SRSM today. From this point of view his work is invaluable, as his “Thunderbolt of Reason” book on a fellow Elgin citizen of the ‘United Scotsmen’, Robert Watson, who was also Napoleon’s tutor. His hero died of a Willie MacRae type suicide in a London garret. The 78 year old “throttled himself with a stick twisted in cravat”, proving himself as acrobatic as Willie MacRae shooting himself in the head and throwing his gun, briefcase and neatly stacked papers many yards away from his crashed car. Graham Bain is a native of Elgin. Sadly we have lost touch with him since he moved to Spain to work. Let’s hope he sees this and gets back in touch. At the heart of this important pamphlet on the Clydeside socialist John Maclean and late-20th century capitalism is the lecture given by James D. Young in Glasgow in 1986 during workers' strikes. The meeting was organised by the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) to initiate the first annual memorial lecture on John Maclean. The lecture was titled John Maclean: Educator of the Working Class. However, it is now accompanied by an introduction dealing with the Thatcher/Major attack on Newbattie Abbey College, insurgent, radical Scotland and the attacks of such would-be Tory "historians" as Michael Fry on John Maclean and Scottish socialism. In a strong insistence on the need for a militant socialist response to right-wing Tory and spineless Kinnockite- "socialism", James D. Young offers a counter-attack in the spirit of John Maclean. His pamphlet on John Maclean and late-20th century capitalism concludes with a brief tribute to Harry McShane, the last of the Clydeside Reds. In anticipating a new era of socialist resurgence and renaissance as we move towards the 21st century, Young finds inspiration in the lives of John Maclean and the pioneers of the Scottish Socialist Teachers' Society. A lifelong socialist militant, historian and writer, James D. Young was a Reader in history at the University of Stirling.
