that the United States today has no legal basis to use significant armed force against Iran, and that another unlawful war in the wake of the Iraq debacle would be very damaging to American interests and image abroad…<br/> <hr/></p> <p><b>R</b>umors are flying of a U.S. plan for war with Iran. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates insisted a few days ago, however, that the United States is not planning a war. [<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120123181353/http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/forumy/2007/02/legal-case-against-war-with-iran.php#1" class="external" target="_blank">1</a>] Let’s hope Gates is speaking the truth because in the circumstances of today the United States has no legal basis to use significant armed force on the territory of Iran. If we learn nothing else from the Iraq debacle it should be the high price of unlawful war. <br/>International law provides only two bases for the lawful use of force: self-defense and Security Council authorization. The Security Council refused to authorize America’s tough economic sanctions package against Iran, so there is little likelihood it would authorize a military strike. [<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120123181353/http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/forumy/2007/02/legal-case-against-war-with-iran.php#2" class="external" target="_blank">2</a>] <br/>As for self-defense, in an NPR interview on January 31, Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns invoked United Nations Charter Article 51 with respect to our relations with Iran (although he also said the U.S. is not planning a war). [<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120123181353/http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/forumy/2007/02/legal-case-against-war-with-iran.php#3" class="external" target="_blank">3</a>] Article 51 provides an exception to the Charter’s general prohibition on the use of force. States have the right to use force in individual and collective self-defense if an armed attack occurs. Secretary Burns seemed to suggest that such a right exists vis-à-vis Iran. These episcopalians which seems to mean people who follow the guidance of bishops split from the English sect at the time of the American indpendence from England and called themselves episcopalians because the American revolutionaries forbade that there be a “Church of America.” The “Church of England” are in turn a sect that has split from the sect called “Roman Catholics” because some English king or another wanted a new wife. Wherever they went the English brought wth them their Church except that <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120123181353/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglican_Communion#Provinces_of_the_Anglican_Communion" class="external" target="_blank">they called it things like the “Church of Nigeria” and the “Anglican Church in Kenya”</a> Keeping track of all these sects can be confusing and is not relevant to my purpose which is to reply to his criticisms of how America is behaving which he is making using his terms as an American and as a follower of the Prophet Jesus (PBUH).  </p> <p>My reply is in my terms as Muslim and as an Iraki. My purpose is not to open a dispute but to show some of the differences and to show that despite those differences all who try to submit to the will of God and who recognise that though we are not brothers and sisters in religon we are brothers and sisters in humanity have common ground and a common interest in opposing the idolatorous worship of empire which is I believe the root of the war against the people of Irak being waged by the modern colonial power called America and that it has its roots in <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120123181353/http://www.al-islam.org/al-tawhid/felicities/4.htm" class="external" target="_blank">idolatry</a>.
