Tabbing can either cycle within dialog if it&#8217;s important that user responds, or that tabbing outside confines of dialog closes the dialog.</li> <li>Whenever dialog is closed, keyboard focus should be returned to somewhere sensible &#8211; maybe the link/button that opened dialog in the first place, or to top of a new page if one is opened.</li> </ol> <p>Does that sum it up, or is there more that could be added to that list?</p> </div> <div class="discussion" style="display: none"> <p> <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/ee77adf6adc6fe90b388f97b0bd912b2?s=16&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D16&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-16 photo" height="16" width="16"/> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://www.joedolson.com/" rel="external nofollow" class="url">Joe Dolson</a>, <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/a74ce5ef49838f591b3591851227fe38?s=16&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D16&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-16 photo" height="16" width="16"/> gogreener, <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/4e84843ebff0918d72ade21c6ee7b1e4?s=16&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D16&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-16 photo" height="16" width="16"/> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://profiles.wordpress.org/azaozz/" rel="external nofollow" class="url">Andrew Ozz</a>, and 2 others are discussing. <a href="#" class="show-comments">Toggle Comments</a> </p> </div> <div class="bottom-of-entry">&nbsp;</div> <ul id="comments-391" class="commentlist inlinecomments"> <li id="comment-56107" class="comment even thread-even depth-1"> <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/42e1b2ce043c650f98725390585828b2?s=32&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D32&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-32 photo" height="32" width="32"/> <h4> _Redd <span class="meta"> <abbr title="2013-03-18T11:50:49Z">11:50 am <em>on</em> March 18, 2013</abbr> <span class="actions"> <a class="thepermalink" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/03/18/accessible-dialogs-and-popups/#comment-56107" title="Permalink">Permalink</a> | <a rel="nofollow" class="comment-reply-link" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/03/18/accessible-dialogs-and-popups/#respond" title="Reply" onclick="return addComment.moveForm(&quot;commentcontent-56107&quot;, &quot;56107&quot;, &quot;respond&quot;, &quot;391&quot;)">Reply</a> </span> </span> </h4> <div id="commentcontent-56107" class="commentcontent"><p>Graham, please excuse my ignorance on this, but regarding <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/23295" rel="nofollow">Ticket</a><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/23295"> #23295</a>, there is a reference to using an iframe as a solution.</p> <blockquote><p>To work around that we can use an XHR instead of having an iframe (XHRs can be used to set cookies). At present, the contrasts are <strong>way</strong> too low at 2.7:1 (heck &#8212; even I&#8217;m having problems reading the texts).</li> <li>Ditto the text for <em>inactive</em> plugins on the Plugins page with only a contrast ratio of 2.8:1. And absolutely no way to &#8220;highlight&#8221; (increase the contrast) on the text without a mouse.</li> </ol> </div> <div class="discussion" style="display: none"> <p> <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/6506162ada6b700b151ad8a187f65842?s=16&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D16&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-16 photo" height="16" width="16"/> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://helen.wordpress.com/" rel="external nofollow" class="url">Helen Hou-Sandi</a>, <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/0d9561ad86e233e23263cbbeaeb418cc?s=16&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D16&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-16 photo" height="16" width="16"/> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://codex.wordpress.org/User:Esmi" rel="external nofollow" class="url">esmi</a>, <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/42e1b2ce043c650f98725390585828b2?s=16&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D16&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-16 photo" height="16" width="16"/> _Redd, and 1 other are discussing. <a href="#" class="show-comments">Toggle Comments</a> </p> </div> <div class="bottom-of-entry">&nbsp;</div> <ul id="comments-381" class="commentlist inlinecomments"> <li id="comment-55665" class="comment byuser comment-author-jenmylo even thread-even depth-1"> <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/84987b436214f52ec0b04cd1f8a73c3c?s=32&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D32&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-32 photo" height="32" width="32"/> <h4> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://profiles.wordpress.org/users/jane/" rel="external nofollow" class="url">Jen Mylo</a> <span class="meta"> <abbr title="2013-03-16T14:15:05Z">2:15 pm <em>on</em> March 16, 2013</abbr> <span class="actions"> <a class="thepermalink" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/03/15/wordpress-3-6-alpha-testers/#comment-55665" title="Permalink">Permalink</a> | <a rel="nofollow" class="comment-reply-link" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/03/15/wordpress-3-6-alpha-testers/#respond" title="Reply" onclick="return addComment.moveForm(&quot;commentcontent-55665&quot;, &quot;55665&quot;, &quot;respond&quot;, &quot;381&quot;)">Reply</a> </span> </span> </h4> <div id="commentcontent-55665" class="commentcontent"><p>Can you make trac tickets for each of these?</p> </div> <ul class="children"> <li id="comment-56179" class="comment byuser comment-author-esmi bypostauthor odd alt depth-2"> <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/0d9561ad86e233e23263cbbeaeb418cc?s=32&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D32&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-32 photo" height="32" width="32"/> <h4> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://codex.wordpress.org/User:Esmi" rel="external nofollow" class="url">esmi</a> <span class="meta"> <abbr title="2013-03-18T17:39:22Z">5:39 pm <em>on</em> March 18, 2013</abbr> <span class="actions"> <a class="thepermalink" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/03/15/wordpress-3-6-alpha-testers/#comment-56179" title="Permalink">Permalink</a> | <a rel="nofollow" class="comment-reply-link" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/03/15/wordpress-3-6-alpha-testers/#respond" title="Reply" onclick="return addComment.moveForm(&quot;commentcontent-56179&quot;, &quot;56179&quot;, &quot;respond&quot;, &quot;381&quot;)">Reply</a> </span> </span> </h4> <div id="commentcontent-56179" class="commentcontent"><p>Done. Maybe I&#8217;ve been doing this wrong forever, but it seems that the &#8220;good read more&#8221; code snippet could be simplified a bit:<br/> &lt;?php printf( __(&#039;<span>%1$s</span> &#8211; read more&#8217;, &#8216;theme_text_domain&#8217;), get_the_title() );?&gt;<br/> I also wonder if <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/C7.html" rel="nofollow">this technique</a> deserves mention. It&#8217;s weird but I&#8217;m planning on using it in future themes I build.</p> <p>2. There&#8217;s no mention of motion issues. Almost every slider I see these days has accessibility issues including slides advancing too quickly, text embedded in images without alt text, no keyboard navigation, no play/pause button provided, etc.. I wonder if those issues, particularly speed/motion,deserve mention.</p> <p>3. This could take people down a wormhole, but I wonder if citing appropriate WCAG standards might add a bit of muscle to the points.</p> </div> </li><!-- #comment-## --> <li id="comment-54172" class="comment byuser comment-author-esmi bypostauthor even thread-even depth-1"> <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/0d9561ad86e233e23263cbbeaeb418cc?s=32&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D32&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-32 photo" height="32" width="32"/> <h4> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://codex.wordpress.org/User:Esmi" rel="external nofollow" class="url">esmi</a> <span class="meta"> <abbr title="2013-03-08T18:09:27Z">6:09 pm <em>on</em> March 8, 2013</abbr> <span class="actions"> <a class="thepermalink" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/03/08/accessibility-for-theme-developers-first-draft-complete/#comment-54172" title="Permalink">Permalink</a> | <a rel="nofollow" class="comment-reply-link" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/03/08/accessibility-for-theme-developers-first-draft-complete/#respond" title="Reply" onclick="return addComment.moveForm(&quot;commentcontent-54172&quot;, &quot;54172&quot;, &quot;respond&quot;, &quot;363&quot;)">Reply</a> </span> </span> </h4> <div id="commentcontent-54172" class="commentcontent"><blockquote><p>it seems that the “good read more” code snippet could be simplified a bit</p></blockquote> <p>I added the extra variables so that developers could use the generated <code>span</code> to hide the first part of the link off screen &#8211; if that was preferred. What a great resource this is. It covers a lot of ground, and I like how you use a few very basic concepts at the beginning to encourage developers to think along those lines and then also give lots of specific examples later of the way they are implemented. </p> <p>I also learned from this document. For example, I always spawn new tabs because I find that much easier for me when I use websites, but I didn&#8217;t know this causes a problem for people who use screen readers. (I&#8217;m not sure what to do about this. about the Add Media panel</a>, here&#8217;s a quick rundown of the functionality issues with screen readers:</p> <ul> <li>Cannot select images from Media Library.</li> <li>Media Library images display in list either without description/title (IE) or only the first image is seen within the list (Firefox).</li> <li>A newly uploaded image can be deselected, but no other images can be selected in addition.</li> <li>Cannot activate the Select Files link to upload image in Internet Explorer. (Works in Firefox.)</li> <li>Form fields lack description; show as &#8220;unlabeled&#8221; in Internet Explorer.</li> <li>Moving through the media panel can take the user (unknowingly) back into the edit screen.</li> <li>Upon &#8220;re-entering&#8221; the media panel (see previous bullet point), form fields and links no longer seem to work.</li> </ul> <p>I&#8217;m sure there are other things that can be added to this list that I&#8217;ve missed. (Feel free to edit this as necessary, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/mentions/grahamarmfield/" class="mention">@grahamarmfield</a>.) Thanks to all who attended.</p> <h3>Custom Menus</h3> <p>The accessibility of custom menus in WordPress 3.6 and its <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/14045">related Trac ticket</a> continued to be the main topic of conversation. This is undoubtedly going to be a very difficult area to get just right &#8212; not only in terms of the coding approach but also due to the problems of ensuring that screen reader users are presented with a meaningful construct when they try to manipulate menu items. Because of this, it was felt that there was a real danger of theoretical discussions taking priority over the development of prototypes. To try and avoid this, @GrahamArmfield and @lessbloat have agreed to take the lead together on developing prototype solutions.</p> <h3>Add Media Panel</h3> <p>@GrahamArmfield recently raised some concerns over <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/02/25/add-media-panel-accessibility-issues/">accessibility issues within the current Add Media Panel</a> and we decided to progress further with this. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/mentions/ceo/" class="mention">@ceo</a> agreed to post a summation of the issues faced by some screen reader users shortly. Some possible new options were suggested such as an ability to tag images and filter the library by tag or an option to filter the library by upload date. Both may offer some benefits to users trying to locate a specific file in a large library when they are unable to &#8220;see&#8221; the images in question.</p> <h3>Join Us</h3> <p>Finally, a reminder that we are still a relatively small group of active members (although we have 156 people subscribed to this blog by email). We do need more active members &#8211; both technical and non-technical. So do please consider <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/join-us/">joining the group</a>.</p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/https://irclogs.wordpress.org/chanlog.php?channel=wordpress-ui&amp;day=2013-02-27&amp;sort=asc">#wordpress-ui log for February 27, 2013</a></p> </div> <div class="discussion" style="display: none"> <p> <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/42e1b2ce043c650f98725390585828b2?s=16&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D16&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-16 photo" height="16" width="16"/> _Redd is discussing. <a href="#" class="show-comments">Toggle Comments</a> </p> </div> <div class="bottom-of-entry">&nbsp;</div> <ul id="comments-324" class="commentlist inlinecomments"> <li id="comment-53606" class="comment even thread-even depth-1"> <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/42e1b2ce043c650f98725390585828b2?s=32&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D32&amp;r=G" class="avatar avatar-32 photo" height="32" width="32"/> <h4> _Redd <span class="meta"> <abbr title="2013-03-05T19:25:05Z">7:25 pm <em>on</em> March 5, 2013</abbr> <span class="actions"> <a class="thepermalink" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/02/28/irc-meeting-february-27-2013/#comment-53606" title="Permalink">Permalink</a> | <a rel="nofollow" class="comment-reply-link" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/2013/02/28/irc-meeting-february-27-2013/#respond" title="Reply" onclick="return addComment.moveForm(&quot;commentcontent-53606&quot;, &quot;53606&quot;, &quot;respond&quot;, &quot;324&quot;)">Reply</a> </span> </span> </h4> <div id="commentcontent-53606" class="commentcontent"><p>FYI, There&#8217;s an interesting audio report on the accessibility issues of nested menus, whether ARIA works with VR systems, and more:</p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://s3.amazonaws.com/ShopTalk/058_with_derek_featherstone.mp3" rel="nofollow">Audio interview concerning accessibility issues</a></p> <p>For me, this particular audio report brought to light a lot of the difficulties behind ticket <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/14045" rel="nofollow"></a><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/14045"> #14045</a></p> </div> </li><!-- #comment-## --> </ul> </li> </ul> <div class="navigation"> <p class="nav-older"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130320053253/http://make.wordpress.org/accessibility/page/2/">&larr;
