Although accelerometers or Global Positioning System (GPS) have been applied for the monitoring of structures under exploitation, the dynamic monitoring during the stage of construction is not common. This research analyzes whether GPS data can be applied to certain dynamic geometric controls of evolving structures. The fundamentals of this work were applied to the New Bridge of Cádiz (Spain), a worldwide milestone in bridge building. GPS data were recorded with an interval of 1 second during the erection of segments and turned to the frequency domain with Fourier transform. The vibration period and amplitude were contrasted with those provided by the finite element model, with differences of less than 10%, which is admissible. This process provides a vibration record of the structure with GPS, avoiding specific equipment. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fourier%20transform" title="Fourier transform">Fourier transform</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=global%20position%20system" title=" global position system"> global position system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=operational%20modal%20analysis" title=" operational modal analysis"> operational modal analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=structural%20health%20monitoring" title=" structural health monitoring"> structural health monitoring</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109068/application-of-transform-fourier-for-dynamic-control-of-structures-with-global-positioning-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109068.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">246</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">390</span> Flipped Learning Application on the Development of Capabilities for Civil Engineering Education in Labs</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hector%20Barrios-Pi%C3%B1a">Hector Barrios-Piña</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Georgia%20Garc%C3%ADa-Arellano"> Georgia García-Arellano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Salvador%20Garc%C3%ADa-Rodr%C3%ADguez"> Salvador García-Rodríguez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gerardo%20Bocanegra-Garc%C3%ADa"> Gerardo Bocanegra-García</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shashi%20Kant"> Shashi Kant</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This work shows the methodology of application and the effectiveness of the <em>Flipped Learning</em> technique for Civil Engineering laboratory classes. It was experimented by some of the professors of the Department of Civil Engineering at Tecnológico de Monterrey while teaching their laboratory classes. A total of 28 videos were created. The videos primarily demonstrate instructions of the experimental practices other than the usage of tools and materials. The technique allowed the students to prepare for their classes in advance. A survey was conducted on the participating professors and students (semester of August-December 2019) to quantify the effectiveness of the <em>Flipped Learning</em> technique. The students reported it as an excellent way of improving their learning aptitude, including self-learning whereas, the professors felt it as an efficient technique for optimizing their class session, which also provided an extra slot for class-interaction. A comparison of grades was analyzed between the students of the traditional classes and with <em>Flipped Learning</em>. It did not distinguish the benefits of <em>Flipped Learning</em>. However, the positive responses from the students and the professors provide an impetus for continuing and promoting the <em>Flipped Learning</em> technique in future classes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flipped%20learning" title="flipped learning">flipped learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laboratory%20classes" title=" laboratory classes"> laboratory classes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=civil%20engineering" title=" civil engineering"> civil engineering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=competences%20development" title=" competences development"> competences development</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124027/flipped-learning-application-on-the-development-of-capabilities-for-civil-engineering-education-in-labs" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124027.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">161</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">389</span> Context-Aware Recommender System Using Collaborative Filtering, Content-Based Algorithm and Fuzzy Rules</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Xochilt%20Ramirez-Garcia">Xochilt Ramirez-Garcia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mario%20Garcia-Valdez"> Mario Garcia-Valdez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Contextual recommendations are implemented in Recommender Systems to improve user satisfaction, recommender system makes accurate and suitable recommendations for a particular situation reaching personalized recommendations. A total of 160 patients were randomly assigned to either the AI-guided group (n=80) or the physician-guided group (n=80) and followed over 90 days. The AI-guided group received 5.3 ± 1.2 supplements per patient, while the physician-guided group received 2.7 ± 0.6 supplements per patient. The AI system personalized supplement types and dosages based on individual genetic and metabolic profiles. The AI-guided group showed a significant reduction in HbA1c levels from 7.5 ± 0.8% to 7.1 ± 0.7%, compared to a reduction from 7.6 ± 0.9% to 7.4 ± 0.8% in the physician-guided group (mean difference: -0.3%, 95% CI: -0.5% to -0.1%; p < 0.01). Secondary outcomes, including fasting plasma glucose, HOMA-IR, and insulin levels, also improved more in the AI-guided group. Subgroup analyses revealed that the AI-guided regimen was particularly effective in patients with specific genetic polymorphisms and elevated metabolic markers. Safety profiles were comparable between both groups, with no serious adverse events reported. In conclusion, the AI-guided dietary supplement regimen significantly improved glycemic control and metabolic health in T2D patients compared to the standard physician-guided approach, demonstrating the potential of personalized AI-driven interventions in diabetes management. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Type%202%20diabetes" title="Type 2 diabetes">Type 2 diabetes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=AI-guided%20supplementation" title=" AI-guided supplementation"> AI-guided supplementation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=personalized%20medicine" title=" personalized medicine"> personalized medicine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=glycemic%20control" title=" glycemic control"> glycemic control</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metabolic%20health" title=" metabolic health"> metabolic health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=genetic%20polymorphisms" title=" genetic polymorphisms"> genetic polymorphisms</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dietary%20supplements" title=" dietary supplements"> dietary supplements</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=HbA1c" title=" HbA1c"> HbA1c</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fasting%20plasma%20glucose" title=" fasting plasma glucose"> fasting plasma glucose</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=HOMA-IR" title=" HOMA-IR"> HOMA-IR</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=personalized%20nutrition" title=" personalized nutrition"> personalized nutrition</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/194485/optimizing-glycemic-control-with-ai-guided-dietary-supplements-a-randomized-trial-in-type-2-diabetes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/194485.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">8</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">387</span> Auditory Brainstem Response in Wave VI for the Detection of Learning Disabilities</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Isabel%20Garcia-Planas">Maria Isabel Garcia-Planas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Victoria%20Garcia-Camba"> Maria Victoria Garcia-Camba</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The use of brain stem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) is a common way to study the auditory function of people, a way to learn the functionality of a part of the brain neuronal groups that intervene in the learning process by studying the behaviour of wave VI. The latest advances in neuroscience have revealed the existence of different brain activity in the learning process that can be highlighted through the use of innocuous, low-cost, and easy-access techniques such as, among others, the BAEP that can help us to detect early possible neurodevelopmental difficulties for their subsequent assessment and cure. PP-g-IA and DCP have been used as a compatibilizer and as free radical initiators for reactive extrusion, respectively. Mechanical and morphological properties have been characterized in order to study the compatibility of the blends. The obtained results showed that DCP and PP-g-IA improved the stiffness of BioPP in terms of elastic modulus. Moreover, they positively increased the tensile strength and elongation at the break of the blends in comparison with the sample that only had BioPP and MPF in its composition, improving the affinity between both compounds. DCP and PP-g-IA even seem to have certain synergy, which was corroborated through FESEM analysis. Images showed that the MPF particles had greater adhesion to the polymer matrix when PP-g-IA and DCP were added. This effect was more intense when both elements were added, observing an almost inexistent gap between MPF particles and the BioPP matrix. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biopolyproylene" title="biopolyproylene">biopolyproylene</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compatibilization" title=" compatibilization"> compatibilization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mango%20peel%20flour" title=" mango peel flour"> mango peel flour</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wood%20plastic%20composite" title=" wood plastic composite"> wood plastic composite</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147369/mechanical-characterization-of-mango-peel-flour-and-biopolypropylene-composites-compatibilized-with-pp-g-ia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147369.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">101</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">385</span> Generalization of Tsallis Entropy from a Q-Deformed Arithmetic</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J.%20Juan%20Pe%C3%B1a">J. In this work, from a deformation through a scaling function applied to the differential operator, it is possible to generate a q-deformed calculus as well as a q-deformed arithmetic, which not only allows generalizing the exponential and logarithmic functions but also any other standard function. The updated q-deformed differential operator leads to an updated integral operator under which the functions are integrated together with a weight function. For each differentiable function, it is possible to identify its q-deformed partner, which is useful to generalize other algebraic relations proper of the original functions. As an application of this proposal, in this work, a generalization of exponential and logarithmic functions is studied in such a way that their relationship with the thermodynamic functions, particularly the entropy, allows us to have a q-deformed expression of these. As a result, from a particular scaling function applied to the differential operator, a q-deformed arithmetic is obtained, leading to the generalization of the Tsallis entropy. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=q-calculus" title="q-calculus">q-calculus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=q-deformed%20arithmetic" title=" q-deformed arithmetic"> q-deformed arithmetic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=entropy" title=" entropy"> entropy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=exponential%20functions" title=" exponential functions"> exponential functions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermodynamic%20functions" title=" thermodynamic functions"> thermodynamic functions</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/181635/generalization-of-tsallis-entropy-from-a-q-deformed-arithmetic" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/181635.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">78</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">384</span> Analysis of the Accuracy of Earth Movement with Drone Surveys</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ra%C3%BAl%20Pereda%20Garc%C3%ADa">Raúl Pereda García</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Julio%20Manuel%20de%20Luis%20Ruiz"> Julio Manuel de Luis Ruiz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elena%20Castillo%20L%C3%B3pez"> Elena Castillo López</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rub%C3%A9n%20P%C3%A9rez%20%C3%81lvarez"> Rubén Pérez Álvarez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Felipe%20Pi%C3%B1a%20Garc%C3%ADa"> Felipe Piña García</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> New technologies for the capture of point clouds have experienced a great advance in recent years. In this way, its use has been extended in geomatics, providing measurement solutions that have been popularized without there being, many times, a detailed study of its accuracy. This research focuses on the study of the viability of topographic works with drones incorporating different sensors sensitive to the visible spectrum. The fundamentals have been applied to a road, located in Cantabria (Spain), where a platform extension and the reform of a riprap were being constructed. A total of six flights were made during two months, all of them with GPS as part of the photogrammetric process, and the results were contrasted with those measured with total station. The obtained results show that the choice of the camera and the planning of the flight have an important impact on the accuracy. In fact, the representations with a level of detail corresponding to 1/1000 scale are admissible, depending on the existing vegetation, and obtaining better results in the area of the riprap. This set of techniques is, therefore, suitable for the control of earthworks in road works but with certain limitations which are exposed in this paper. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=drone" title="drone">drone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earth%20movement%20control" title=" earth movement control"> earth movement control</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=global%20position%20system" title=" global position system"> global position system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=surveying%20technology." title=" surveying technology. This methodology allows analyzing how the effect of one of the independent variables is moderated by a second independent variable by adding a cross-product term between them as an additional explanatory variable. Due to the very specification of the methodology, the moderated factor is often highly correlated with the constitutive terms. Thus, great multicollinearity problems arise. The appearance of strong multicollinearity in a model has important consequences. Inflated variances of the estimators may appear, there is a tendency to consider non-significant regressors that they probably are together with a very high coefficient of determination, incorrect signs of our coefficients may appear and also the high sensibility of the results to small changes in the dataset. Finally, the high relationship among explanatory variables implies difficulties in fixing the individual effects of each one on the model under study. These consequences shifted to the moderated analysis may imply that it is not worth including an interaction term that may be distorting the model. Thus, it is important to manage the problem with some methodology that allows for obtaining reliable results. After a review of those works that applied the MRA among the ten top journals of the field, it is clear that multicollinearity is mostly disregarded. Less than 15% of the reviewed works take into account potential multicollinearity problems. To overcome the issue, this work studies the possible application of recent methodologies to MRA. Particularly, the raised regression is analyzed. This methodology mitigates collinearity from a geometrical point of view: the collinearity problem arises because the variables under study are very close geometrically, so by separating both variables, the problem can be mitigated. Raise regression maintains the available information and modifies the problematic variables instead of deleting variables, for example. Furthermore, the global characteristics of the initial model are also maintained (sum of squared residuals, estimated variance, coefficient of determination, global significance test and prediction). The proposal is implemented to data from countries of the European Union during the last year available regarding greenhouse gas emissions, per capita GDP and a dummy variable that represents the topography of the country. The use of a dummy variable as the moderator is a special variant of MRA, sometimes called “subgroup regression analysis.” The main conclusion of this work is that applying new techniques to the field can improve in a substantial way the results of the analysis. Particularly, the use of raised regression mitigates great multicollinearity problems, so the researcher is able to rely on the interaction term when interpreting the results of a particular study. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multicollinearity" title="multicollinearity">multicollinearity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MRA" title=" MRA"> MRA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interaction" title=" interaction"> interaction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=raise" title=" raise"> raise</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160117/multicollinearity-and-mra-in-sustainability-application-of-the-raise-regression" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160117.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">104</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">382</span> Generation of 3d Models Obtained with Low-Cost RGB and Thermal Sensors Mounted on Drones</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Julio%20Manuel%20De%20Luis%20Ruiz">Julio Manuel De Luis Ruiz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Javier%20Sedano%20Cibri%C3%A1n"> Javier Sedano Cibrián</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rub%C3%A9N%20P%C3%A9rez%20%C3%81lvarez"> RubéN Pérez Álvarez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ra%C3%BAl%20Pereda%20Garc%C3%ADa"> Raúl Pereda García</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Felipe%20Pi%C3%B1a%20Garc%C3%ADa"> Felipe Piña García</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Nowadays it is common to resort to aerial photography to carry out the prospection and/or exploration of archaeological sites. In this sense, the classic 3D models are being applied to investigate the direction towards which the generally subterranean structures of an archaeological site may continue and therefore, to help in making the decisions that define the location of new excavations. In recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been applied as the vehicles that carry the sensor. This implies certain advantages, such as the possibility of including low-cost sensors, given that these vehicles can carry the sensor at relatively low altitudes. Due to this, low-cost dual sensors have recently begun to be used. This new equipment can collaborate with classic Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) in the exploration of archaeological sites, but this entails the need for a methodological setting to optimise the acquisition, processing and exploitation of the information provided by low-cost dual sensors. This research focuses on the design of an appropriate workflow to obtain 3D models with low-cost sensors carried on UAVs, both in the RGB and thermal domains. All the foregoing has been applied to the archaeological site of Juliobriga, located in Cantabria (Spain). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=process%20optimization" title="process optimization">process optimization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RGB%20models" title=" RGB models"> RGB models</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermal%20models" title=" thermal models"> thermal models</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=" title=" "> </a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UAV" title=" UAV"> UAV</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=workflow" title=" workflow"> workflow</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/137056/generation-of-3d-models-obtained-with-low-cost-rgb-and-thermal-sensors-mounted-on-drones" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/137056.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">138</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">381</span> Effectiveness of Laughter Yoga in Reducing Anxiety among Pre-Operative Patients for Scheduled Major Surgery</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Denise%20Allison%20D.%20Garcia">Denise Allison D. Several methods or interventions are being applied in order to relieve anxiety. Laughter yoga, however, is a method that has been used to relieve anxiety but has not yet been tested to pre-operative patients. Therefore, this study determined the effectiveness of laughter yoga in reducing anxiety among pre-operative middle-aged patients scheduled for major surgery. Methods: After Ethics Review Board approval, a quasi-experimental study was conducted among 40 purposely-selected pre-operative patients in two tertiary hospitals. Anxiety level was measured prior to administration of laughter yoga using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory with a Cronbach alpha of 0.83. After Laughter yoga, anxiety level was then measured again. Gathered data were analyzed in SPSS version 20 using paired and independent t-test and ANCOVA. Results: After analysis of the data gathered, the results showed that there was a significant decrease in the anxiety level of patients in the experimental group. From an anxiety level of 44.00, the rating went down to 36.85. Meanwhile in the control group, the anxiety level at the pretest at 41.25 went up to 42.50. Laughter yoga was an effective non-pharmacologic intervention for reducing anxiety of pre-operative patients. Conclusion: It is therefore concluded that laughter yoga causes a significant decrease in the anxiety level of patients. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anxiety" title="anxiety">anxiety</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laughter%20yoga" title=" laughter yoga"> laughter yoga</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-pharmacologic" title=" non-pharmacologic"> non-pharmacologic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pre-operative" title=" pre-operative"> pre-operative</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/45851/effectiveness-of-laughter-yoga-in-reducing-anxiety-among-pre-operative-patients-for-scheduled-major-surgery" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/45851.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">442</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">380</span> The Mediating Role of Store Personality in the Relationship Between Self-Congruity and Manifestations of Loyalty</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mar%C3%ADa%20de%20los%20%C3%81ngeles%20Crespo%20L%C3%B3pez">María de los Ángeles Crespo López</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carmen%20Garc%C3%ADa%20Garc%C3%ADa"> Carmen García García</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The highly competitive nature of today's globalised marketplace requires that brands and stores develop effective commercial strategies to ensure their economic survival. Maintaining the loyalty of existing customers constitutes one key strategy that yields the best results. Although the relationship between consumers' self-congruity and their manifestations of loyalty towards a store has been investigated, the role of store personality in this relationship remains unclear. In this study, multiple parallel mediation analysis was used to examine the effect of Store Personality on the relationship between Self-Congruity of consumers and their Manifestations of Loyalty. For this purpose, 457 Spanish consumers of the Fnac store completed three self-report questionnaires assessing Store Personality, Self-Congruity, and Store Loyalty. The data were analyzed using the SPSS macro PROCESS. The results revealed that three dimensions of Store Personality, namely Exciting, Close and Competent Store, positively and significantly mediated the relationship between Self-Congruity and Manifestations of Loyalty. The indirect effect of Competent Store was the greatest. This means that a consumer with higher levels of Self-Congruity with the store will exhibit more Manifestations of Loyalty when the store is perceived as Exciting, Close or Competent. These findings suggest that more attention should be paid to the perceived personality of stores for the development of effective marketing strategies to maintain or increase consumers' manifestations of loyalty towards stores. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multiple%20parallel%20mediation" title="multiple parallel mediation">multiple parallel mediation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PROCESS" title=" PROCESS"> PROCESS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-congruence" title=" self-congruence"> self-congruence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=store%20loyalty" title=" store loyalty"> store loyalty</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=store%20personality" title=" store personality"> store personality</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/145520/the-mediating-role-of-store-personality-in-the-relationship-between-self-congruity-and-manifestations-of-loyalty" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/145520.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">158</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">379</span> A new genus and species of Agriotina Laporte, 1840 (Coleoptera: Elateridae: Agriotini) from Colombia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Martin%20L.%20Zurita%20Garc%C3%ADa">Martin L. There are listed 43 genera for Colombia but without a specific number of their species. No species of the genus Agriotes Eschscholtz (Elaterinae: Agriotini) have been recorded in Colombia. Currently, the subtribe Agriotina in the New World includes three genera: Agriotes, Bohartina Arias and Dalopius Eschscholtz. Historically, the genera Agriotes and Dalopius have had significant taxonomic problems due to their morphological resemblance. These similarities motivated several specialists to generate taxonomic movements such as synonyms and segregations of species in these genera on several occasions. To trying to solve these taxonomic problems, an author proposes some morphological characters present in the larvae, but mainly some genital characters of the females, such as the sclerotized plates of the bursa copulatrix. After examining material newly collected in Colombia, we found a click beetle having a unique combination of diagnostic characters that clearly separate it from any other genera of Agriotina. Hence, we describe and illustrate this click beetle under the name Raphaellus deusminutosi Zurita-García, Morales-Perdomo & Martínez-Luque n. gen. & n. sp., and we also compare this genus with the other New World genera of the subtribes Agriotina. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=click%20beetles" title="click beetles">click beetles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=new%20genus" title=" new genus"> new genus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=new%20species" title=" new species"> new species</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=elaterinae" title=" elaterinae"> elaterinae</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=raphaellus%20deusminutosi" title=" raphaellus deusminutosi"> raphaellus deusminutosi</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/175772/a-new-genus-and-species-of-agriotina-laporte-1840-coleoptera-elateridae-agriotini-from-colombia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/175772.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">83</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">378</span> The Latency-Amplitude Binomial of Waves Resulting from the Application of Evoked Potentials for the Diagnosis of Dyscalculia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Isabel%20Garcia-Planas">Maria Isabel Garcia-Planas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Victoria%20Garcia-Camba"> Maria Victoria Garcia-Camba</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Recent advances in cognitive neuroscience have allowed a step forward in perceiving the processes involved in learning from the point of view of the acquisition of new information or the modification of existing mental content. The evoked potentials technique reveals how basic brain processes interact to achieve adequate and flexible behaviours. The objective of this work, using evoked potentials, is to study if it is possible to distinguish if a patient suffers a specific type of learning disorder to decide the possible therapies to follow. The methodology used, is the analysis of the dynamics of different areas of the brain during a cognitive activity to find the relationships between the different areas analyzed in order to better understand the functioning of neural networks. Also, the latest advances in neuroscience have revealed the existence of different brain activity in the learning process that can be highlighted through the use of non-invasive, innocuous, low-cost and easy-access techniques such as, among others, the evoked potentials that can help to detect early possible neuro-developmental difficulties for their subsequent assessment and cure. From the study of the amplitudes and latencies of the evoked potentials, it is possible to detect brain alterations in the learning process specifically in dyscalculia, to achieve specific corrective measures for the application of personalized psycho pedagogical plans that allow obtaining an optimal integral development of the affected people. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dyscalculia" title="dyscalculia">dyscalculia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neurodevelopment" title=" neurodevelopment"> neurodevelopment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=evoked%20potentials" title=" evoked potentials"> evoked potentials</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Learning%20disabilities" title=" Learning disabilities"> Learning disabilities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neural%20networks" title=" neural networks"> neural networks</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133533/the-latency-amplitude-binomial-of-waves-resulting-from-the-application-of-evoked-potentials-for-the-diagnosis-of-dyscalculia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133533.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">139</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">377</span> Optimizing Weight Loss with AI (GenAISᵀᴹ): A Randomized Trial of Dietary Supplement Prescriptions in Obese Patients</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Evgeny%20Pokushalov">Evgeny Pokushalov</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andrey%20Ponomarenko"> Andrey Ponomarenko</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=John%20Smith"> John Smith</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Johnson"> Michael Johnson</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claire%20Garcia"> Claire Garcia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Inessa%20Pak"> Inessa Pak</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Evgenya%20Shrainer"> Evgenya Shrainer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dmitry%20Kudlay"> Dmitry Kudlay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sevda%20Bayramova"> Sevda Bayramova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Richard%20Miller"> Richard Miller</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background: Obesity is a complex, multifactorial chronic disease that poses significant health risks. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) offer the potential for more personalized and effective dietary supplement (DS) regimens to promote weight loss. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of AI-guided DS prescriptions compared to standard physician-guided DS prescriptions in obese patients. Methods: This randomized, parallel-group pilot study enrolled 60 individuals aged 40 to 60 years with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or greater. Participants were randomized to receive either AI-guided DS prescriptions (n = 30) or physician-guided DS prescriptions (n = 30) for 180 days. The primary endpoints were the percentage change in body weight and the proportion of participants achieving a ≥5% weight reduction. Secondary endpoints included changes in BMI, fat mass, visceral fat rating, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, lipid profiles, fasting plasma glucose, hsCRP levels, and postprandial appetite ratings. Adverse events were monitored throughout the study. Results: Both groups were well balanced in terms of baseline characteristics. Significant weight loss was observed in the AI-guided group, with a mean reduction of -12.3% (95% CI: -13.1 to -11.5%) compared to -7.2% (95% CI: -8.1 to -6.3%) in the physician-guided group, resulting in a treatment difference of -5.1% (95% CI: -6.4 to -3.8%; p < 0.01). At day 180, 84.7% of the AI-guided group achieved a weight reduction of ≥5%, compared to 54.5% in the physician-guided group (Odds Ratio: 4.3; 95% CI: 3.1 to 5.9; p < 0.01). Significant improvements were also observed in BMI, fat mass, and visceral fat rating in the AI-guided group (p < 0.01 for all). Postprandial appetite suppression was greater in the AI-guided group, with significant reductions in hunger and prospective food consumption, and increases in fullness and satiety (p < 0.01 for all). Adverse events were generally mild-to-moderate, with higher incidences of gastrointestinal symptoms in the AI-guided group, but these were manageable and did not impact adherence. Conclusion: The AI-guided dietary supplement regimen was more effective in promoting weight loss, improving body composition, and suppressing appetite compared to the physician-guided regimen. These findings suggest that AI-guided, personalized supplement prescriptions could offer a more effective approach to managing obesity. Further research with larger sample sizes is warranted to confirm these results and optimize AI-based interventions for weight loss. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=obesity" title="obesity">obesity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=AI-guided" title=" AI-guided"> AI-guided</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dietary%20supplements" title=" dietary supplements"> dietary supplements</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=weight%20loss" title=" weight loss"> weight loss</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=personalized%20medicine" title=" personalized medicine"> personalized medicine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metabolic%20health" title=" metabolic health"> metabolic health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=appetite%20suppression" title=" appetite suppression"> appetite suppression</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/194486/optimizing-weight-loss-with-ai-genais-a-randomized-trial-of-dietary-supplement-prescriptions-in-obese-patients" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/194486.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">7</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">376</span> Envy and Schadenfreude Domains in a Model of Neurodegeneration</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hernando%20Santamar%C3%ADa-Garc%C3%ADa">Hernando Santamaría-García</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandra%20B%C3%A1ez"> Sandra Báez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pablo%20Reyes"> Pablo Reyes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jos%C3%A9%20Santamar%C3%ADa-Garc%C3%ADa"> José Santamaría-García</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Diana%20Matallana"> Diana Matallana</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Adolfo%20Garc%C3%ADa"> Adolfo García</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Agust%C3%ADn%20Iba%C3%B1ez"> Agustín Ibañez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The study of moral emotions (i.e., Schadenfreude and envy) is critical to understand the ecological complexity of everyday interactions between cognitive, affective, and social cognition processes. Most previous studies in this area have used correlational imaging techniques and framed Schadenfreude and envy as monolithic domains. Here, we profit from a relevant neurodegeneration model to disentangle the brain regions engaged in three dimensions of Schadenfreude and envy: deservingness, morality, and legality. We tested 20 patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), 24 patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), as a contrastive neurodegeneration model, and 20 healthy controls on a novel task highlighting each of these dimensions in scenarios eliciting Schadenfreude and envy. Compared with the AD and control groups, bvFTD patients obtained significantly higher scores on all dimensions for both emotions. Interestingly, the legal dimension for both envy and Schadenfreude elicited higher emotional scores than the deservingness and moral dimensions. Furthermore, correlational analyses in bvFTD showed that higher envy and Schadenfreude scores were associated with greater deficits in social cognition, inhibitory control, and behavior. Brain anatomy findings (restricted to bvFTD and controls) confirmed differences in how these groups process each dimension. Schadenfreude was associated with the ventral striatum in all subjects. Also, in bvFTD patients, increased Schadenfreude across dimensions was negatively correlated with regions supporting social-value rewards, mentalizing, and social cognition (frontal pole, temporal pole, angular gyrus and precuneus). In all subjects, all dimensions of envy positively correlated with the volume of the anterior cingulate cortex, a region involved in processing unfair social comparisons. By contrast, in bvFTD patients, the intensified experience of envy across all dimensions was negatively correlated with a set of areas subserving social cognition, including the prefrontal cortex, the parahippocampus, and the amygdala. Together, the present results provide the first lesion-based evidence for the multidimensional nature of the emotional experiences of envy and Schadenfreude. Moreover, this is the first demonstration of a selective exacerbation of envy and Schadenfreude in bvFTD patients, probably triggered by atrophy to social cognition networks. Our results offer new insights into the mechanisms subserving complex emotions and moral cognition in neurodegeneration, paving the way for groundbreaking research on their interaction with other cognitive, social, and emotional processes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20cognition" title="social cognition">social cognition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=moral%20emotions" title=" moral emotions"> moral emotions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neuroimaging" title=" neuroimaging"> neuroimaging</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=frontotemporal%20dementia" title=" frontotemporal dementia"> frontotemporal dementia</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75106/envy-and-schadenfreude-domains-in-a-model-of-neurodegeneration" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75106.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">290</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">375</span> Effect of Segregation on the Reaction Rate of Sewage Sludge Pyrolysis in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Soria-Verdugo">A. This original measuring technique consists of installing the whole reactor over a precision scale, capable of measuring the mass of the complete reactor with enough precision to detect the mass released by the sewage sludge sample during its pyrolysis. The inert conditions required for the pyrolysis process were obtained supplying the bed with a nitrogen flowrate, and the bed temperature was adjusted to either 500 ºC or 600 ºC using a group of three electric resistors. The sewage sludge sample was supplied through the top of the bed in a batch of 10 g. The measurement of the mass released by the sewage sludge sample was employed to determine the evolution of the reaction rate during the pyrolysis, the total amount of volatile matter released, and the pyrolysis time. The pyrolysis tests of sewage sludge in the fluidized bed were conducted using two different bed materials of the same size but different densities: silica sand and sepiolite particles. The higher density of silica sand particles induces a flotsam behavior for the sewage sludge particles which move close to the bed surface. In contrast, the lower density of sepiolite produces a neutrally-buoyant behavior for the sewage sludge particles, which shows a proper circulation throughout the whole bed in this case. The analysis of the evolution of the pyrolysis process in both fluidized beds show that the pyrolysis is faster when buoyancy effects are negligible, i.e. in the bed conformed by sepiolite particles. Moreover, sepiolite was found to show an absorbent capability for the volatile matter released during the pyrolysis of sewage sludge. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bubbling%20fluidized%20bed" title="bubbling fluidized bed">bubbling fluidized bed</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pyrolysis" title=" pyrolysis"> pyrolysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reaction%20rate" title=" reaction rate"> reaction rate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=segregation%20effects" title=" segregation effects"> segregation effects</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sewage%20sludge" title=" sewage sludge"> sewage sludge</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/63611/effect-of-segregation-on-the-reaction-rate-of-sewage-sludge-pyrolysis-in-a-bubbling-fluidized-bed" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/63611.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">357</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">374</span> Modifying the Electrical Properties of Liquid Crystal Cells by Including TiO₂ Nanoparticles on a Substrate</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=V.%20Marzal">V. In addition, these media can also be used to control the optical properties of the nanoparticles, for instance when they are resonant. In this work, the change on electrical properties of a liquid crystal cell by adding TiO₂ nanoparticles on one of the alignment layers has been analyzed. These nanoparticles, with a diameter of 100 nm and spherical shape, were deposited in one of the substrates (ITO + polyimide) by spin-coating in order to produce a homogeneous layer. These substrates were checked using an optical microscope (objective x100) to avoid potential agglomerates. The liquid crystal cell is then fabricated, using one of these substrates and another without nanoparticles, and filled with E7. The study of the electrical response was done through impedance measurements in a long range of frequencies (3 Hz- 6 MHz) and at ambient temperature. Different nanoparticle concentrations were considered, as well as pure E7 and an empty cell for comparison purposes. Results about the effective dielectric permittivity and conductivity are presented along with models of equivalent electric circuits and its physical interpretation. As a summary, it has been observed the clear influence of the presence of the nanoparticles, strongly modifying the electric response of the device. In particular, a variation of both the effective permittivity and the conductivity of the device have been observed. This result requires a deep analysis of the effect of these nanoparticles on the trapping of free ions in the device, allowing a controlled manipulation and frequency tuning of the electrical response of these devices. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=alignment%20layer" title="alignment layer">alignment layer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electrical%20behavior" title=" electrical behavior"> electrical behavior</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=liquid%20crystal" title=" liquid crystal"> liquid crystal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=TiO%E2%82%82%20nanoparticles" title=" TiO₂ nanoparticles"> TiO₂ nanoparticles</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/88386/modifying-the-electrical-properties-of-liquid-crystal-cells-by-including-tio2-nanoparticles-on-a-substrate" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/88386.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">213</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">373</span> Maintaining Parenthood: Challenges for Mothers Who Are Victims of Domestic Violence</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Druzhinenko-Silhan%20Daria">Druzhinenko-Silhan Daria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Metz%20Claire"> Metz Claire</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper, we introduce the findings of the "Conjugal violence: mothers' parenting and court decisions" (VIC-PADEJ) study, focusing on the motherhood experiences of domestic violence victims. The findings reveal a pronounced decline in security and an imperative need for structuring both social and internal realities. The convergence of these findings indicates that parenting, post-experiencing domestic violence, may become an unattainable task due to the deficiency of internal resources. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=domestic%20violence" title="domestic violence">domestic violence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parenthood" title=" parenthood"> parenthood</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mothers%20victims" title=" mothers victims"> mothers victims</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=projective%20methods" title=" projective methods"> projective methods</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=longitudinal%20research" title=" longitudinal research"> longitudinal research</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=alceste%20analysis" title=" alceste analysis"> alceste analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/184672/maintaining-parenthood-challenges-for-mothers-who-are-victims-of-domestic-violence" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/184672.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">52</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">372</span> Methylation Analysis of PHF20L1 and DACT2 Gene Promoters in Women with Breast Cancer</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marta%20E.%20Hernandez-Caballero">Marta E. DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification critical in CpG sites, aberrant methylation of CpG islands in promoters is a hallmark of cancer. So, gene expression can be regulated by alterations in DNA methylation. In cell lines DACT2 gene reduces the growth and migration of tumor cells by its participation in the suppression of TGFb/SMAD2/3. PHF20L1 is involved in histone acetylation therefore, it regulates transcription. Our aim was to analyze the methylation status of the DACT2 and PHF20L1 promoter regions in tumoral and healthy mammary tissue from women with BC in different progression states. The study included 77 patients from Centro Medico Nacional La Raza in Mexico City. After identifying a CpG island in DACT2 and PHF20L1 promoters, DNA methylation status was analyzed through sodium bisulfite with subsequent amplification using methylation-specific PCR. Results revealed no changes in methylation status of PHF20L1 and cancer stages (II y III) or in comparison to healthy tissues, it was demethylated. DACT2 promoter methylation was no significant between tumoral stages (II, P = 0.37; III, P = 0.17) or with healthy tissue. Previous data reported DACT2 methylated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma but in this study promoter methylation was not observed. PHF20L1 protein contains N-terminal Tudor and C-terminal plant homeodomain domains, it has been suggested that can stabilize DNMT1 regulating DNA methylation, therefore, was associated with poor prognostic in BC. We found no evidence of methylation in patients and controls in PHF20L1 promoter, so its association with BC may have no direct relation with promoter methylation. More studies including other methylation sites in these genes in BC are necessary. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bisulfite%20conversion" title="bisulfite conversion">bisulfite conversion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=breast%20cancer" title=" breast cancer"> breast cancer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DACT2" title=" DACT2"> DACT2</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DNA%20methylation" title=" DNA methylation"> DNA methylation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PHF20L1" title=" PHF20L1"> PHF20L1</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tumoral%20status" title=" tumoral status"> tumoral status</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/53681/methylation-analysis-of-phf20l1-and-dact2-gene-promoters-in-women-with-breast-cancer" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/53681.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">301</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">371</span> Improvement of Vascular Oxidative Stress in Diabetic Rats by Supplementation with a Wine Pomace Product</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=P.%20Mu%C3%B1iz">P. The current study aimed to evaluate the protection of a powdered product obtained from wine pomace (WPP) against oxidative damage associated to diabetes. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic (STZ) male Wistar rats and non-diabetic control (C) rats initially weighting 300±10 mg were supplemented with 100 mg of WPP or vehicle for 4 weeks. Blood glucose levels and body weight (BW) were measured weekly. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) assessed using the ABTS method, and F2α-Isoprostanes (F2-IsoPs) quantified by GC-MS were measured in plasma collected at the end of this experiment. Blood glucose levels tended to increase in the STZ group along the study. Supplementation maintained relatively stable during the whole experiment the blood glucose values in STZ+WPP rats. A weight loss of BW in STZ rats respect to C rats was observed after 4 weeks, whereas the decrease in BW of STZ+WPP group showed a tendency to improve at the end of the study. TAC values significantly decreased around 11% only in plasma of STZ rats. The rest of groups showed plasma TAC values about 8 mM Trolox. Increased levels of F2-IsoPs (around 25%) were also observed in plasma of STZ rats compared to the supplemented rats, revealing a protective effect of WPP against lipid peroxidation. In conclusion, 4-week supplementation with a product derived from winery by-products improved weight loss, plasma TAC, and lipid oxidation biomarkers in Type I diabetic rats. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=blood%20glucose" title="blood glucose">blood glucose</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=grape%20polyphenols" title=" grape polyphenols"> grape polyphenols</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=F2%CE%B1-isoprostanes" title=" F2α-isoprostanes"> F2α-isoprostanes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=type%20I%20diabetes" title=" type I diabetes"> type I diabetes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oxidative%20stress" title=" oxidative stress"> oxidative stress</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31679/improvement-of-vascular-oxidative-stress-in-diabetic-rats-by-supplementation-with-a-wine-pomace-product" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31679.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">470</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">370</span> Enabling Translanguaging in the EFL Classroom, Affordances of Learning and Reflections</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nada%20Alghali">Nada Alghali</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Translanguaging pedagogy suggests a new perspective in language education relating to multilingualism; multilingual learners have one linguistic repertoire and not two or more separate language systems (García and Wei, 2014). When learners translanguage, they are able to draw on all their language features in a flexible and integrated way (Otheguy, García, & Reid, 2015). In the Foreign Language Classroom, however, the tendency to use the target language only is still advocated as a pedagogy. This study attempts to enable learners in the English as a foreign language classroom to draw on their full linguistic repertoire through collaborative reading lessons. In observations prior to this study, in a classroom where English only policy prevails, learners still used their first language in group discussions yet were constrained at times by the teacher’s language policies. Through strategically enabling translanguaging in reading lessons (Celic and Seltzer, 2011), this study has revealed that learners showed creative ways of language use for learning and reflected positively on thisexperience. This case study enabled two groups in two different proficiency level classrooms who are learning English as a foreign language in their first year at University in Saudi Arabia. Learners in the two groups wereobserved over six weeks and wereasked to reflect their learning every week. The same learners were also interviewed at the end of translanguaging weeks after completing a modified model of the learning reflection (Ash and Clayton, 2009). This study positions translanguaging as collaborative and agentive within a sociocultural framework of learning, positioning translanguaging as a resource for learning as well as a process of learning. Translanguaging learning episodes are elicited from classroom observations, artefacts, interviews, reflections, and focus groups, where they are analysed qualitatively following the sociocultural discourse analysis (Fairclough &Wodak, 1997; Mercer, 2004). Initial outcomes suggest functions of translanguaging in collaborative reading tasks and recommendations for a collaborative translanguaging pedagogy approach in the EFL classroom. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=translanguaging" title="translanguaging">translanguaging</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EFL" title=" EFL"> EFL</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sociocultural%20theory" title=" sociocultural theory"> sociocultural theory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=discourse%20analysis" title=" discourse analysis"> discourse analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147121/enabling-translanguaging-in-the-efl-classroom-affordances-of-learning-and-reflections" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147121.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">180</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">369</span> Analyzing Mexican Adaptation of Shakespeare: A Study of Onstage Violence in Richard III and Its Impact on Mexican Viewers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nelya%20Babynets">Nelya Babynets</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Shakespeare and Mexican theatregoers have enjoyed quite a complex relationship. Shakespearean plays have appeared on the Mexican stage with remarkable perseverance, yet with mixed success. Although Shakespeare has long been a part of the global cultural marketplace and his works are celebrated all around the world, the adaptation of his plays on the contemporary Mexican stage is always an adventure, since the works of this early modern author are frequently seen as the legacy of a ‘high’, but obsolete, culture, one that is quite distant from the present-day viewers’ daily experiences and concerns. Moreover, Mexican productions of Shakespeare are presented mostly in Peninsular Spanish, a language similar yet alien to the language spoken in Mexico, one that does not wholly fit into the viewers’ cultural praxis. This is the reason why Mexican dramatic adaptations of Shakespearean plays tend to replace the cultural references of the original piece with ones that are more significant and innate to Latin American spectators. This paper analyses the new Mexican production of Richard III adapted and directed by Mauricio Garcia Lozano, which employs onstage violence - a cultural force that is inherent to all human beings regardless of their beliefs, ethnic background or nationality - as the means to make this play more relevant to a present-day audience. Thus, this paper addresses how the bloody bombast of staged murders helps to avoid the tyranny of a rigid framework of fixed meanings that denies the possibility of an intercultural appropriation of this European play written over four hundred years ago. The impact of violence displayed in Garcia Lozano’s adaptation of Richard III on Mexican audiences will also be examined. This study is particularly relevant in Mexico where the term ‘tragedy’ has become a commonplace and where drug wars and state-sanctioned violence have already taken the lives of many people. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=audience" title="audience">audience</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dramatic%20adaptation" title=" dramatic adaptation"> dramatic adaptation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shakespeare" title=" Shakespeare"> Shakespeare</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=viewer" title=" viewer"> viewer</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83686/analyzing-mexican-adaptation-of-shakespeare-a-study-of-onstage-violence-in-richard-iii-and-its-impact-on-mexican-viewers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83686.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">459</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">368</span> Reliability Analysis of Dam under Quicksand Condition</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Manthan%20Patel">Manthan Patel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vinit%20Ahlawat"> Vinit Ahlawat</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anshh%20Singh%20Claire"> Anshh Singh Claire</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pijush%20Samui"> Pijush Samui</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper focuses on the analysis of quicksand condition for a dam foundation. The quicksand condition occurs in cohesion less soil when effective stress of soil becomes zero. In a dam, the saturated sediment may appear quite solid until a sudden change in pressure or shock initiates liquefaction. This causes the sand to form a suspension and lose strength hence resulting in failure of dam. A soil profile shows different properties at different points and the values obtained are uncertain thus reliability analysis is performed. The reliability is defined as probability of safety of a system in a given environment and loading condition and it is assessed as Reliability Index. The reliability analysis of dams under quicksand condition is carried by Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). Reliability index and factor of safety relating to liquefaction of soil is analysed using GPR. The results of reliability analysis by GPR is compared to that of conventional method and it is demonstrated that on applying GPR the probabilistic analysis reduces the computational time and efforts. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=factor%20of%20safety" title="factor of safety">factor of safety</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GPR" title=" GPR"> GPR</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reliability%20index" title=" reliability index"> reliability index</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quicksand" title=" quicksand"> quicksand</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/27180/reliability-analysis-of-dam-under-quicksand-condition" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/27180.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">482</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">367</span> Impact of Ecosystem Engineers on Soil Structuration in a Restored Floodplain in Switzerland</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andreas%20Schomburg">Andreas Schomburg</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claire%20Le%20Bayon"> Claire Le Bayon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claire%20Guenat"> Claire Guenat</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Philip%20Brunner"> Philip Brunner</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Numerous river restoration projects have been established in Switzerland in recent years after decades of human activity in floodplains. The success of restoration projects in terms of biodiversity and ecosystem functions largely depend on the development of the floodplain soil system. Plants and earthworms as ecosystem engineers are known to be able to build up a stable soil structure by incorporating soil organic matter into the soil matrix that creates water stable soil aggregates. Their engineering efficiency however largely depends on changing soil properties and frequent floods along an evolutive floodplain transect. This study, therefore, aims to quantify the effect of flood frequency and duration as well as of physico-chemical soil parameters on plants’ and earthworms’ engineering efficiency. It is furthermore predicted that these influences may have a different impact on one of the engineers that leads to a varying contribution to aggregate formation within the floodplain transect. Ecosystem engineers were sampled and described in three different floodplain habitats differentiated according to the evolutionary stages of the vegetation ranging from pioneer to forest vegetation in a floodplain restored 15 years ago. In addition, the same analyses were performed in an embanked adjacent pasture as a reference for the pre-restored state. Soil aggregates were collected and analyzed for their organic matter quantity and quality using Rock Eval pyrolysis. Water level and discharge measurements dating back until 2008 were used to quantify the return period of major floods. Our results show an increasing amount of water stable aggregates in soil with increasing distance to the river and show largest values in the reference site. A decreasing flood frequency and the proportion of silt and clay in the soil texture explain these findings according to F values from one way ANOVA of a fitted mixed effect model. Significantly larger amounts of labile organic matter signatures were found in soil aggregates in the forest habitat and in the reference site that indicates a larger contribution of plants to soil aggregation in these habitats compared to the pioneer vegetation zone. Earthworms’ contribution to soil aggregation does not show significant differences in the floodplain transect, but their effect could be identified even in the pioneer vegetation with its large proportion of coarse sand in the soil texture and frequent inundations. These findings indicate that ecosystem engineers seem to be able to create soil aggregates even under unfavorable soil conditions and under frequent floods. A restoration success can therefore be expected even in ecosystems with harsh soil properties and frequent external disturbances. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ecosystem%20engineers" title="ecosystem engineers">ecosystem engineers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flood%20frequency" title=" flood frequency"> flood frequency</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=floodplains" title=" floodplains"> floodplains</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=river%20restoration" title=" river restoration"> river restoration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rock%20eval%20pyrolysis" title=" rock eval pyrolysis"> rock eval pyrolysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20organic%20matter%20incorporation" title=" soil organic matter incorporation"> soil organic matter incorporation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20structuration" title=" soil structuration"> soil structuration</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56828/impact-of-ecosystem-engineers-on-soil-structuration-in-a-restored-floodplain-in-switzerland" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56828.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">269</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">366</span> Critical Dialogue: Anti-Racism Teacher Education in Predominantly White Schools</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claire%20M.%20Hollocou">Claire M. This study aims to discuss the practices of anti-racist education across two predominantly affluent white schools. It offers our perspectives as white and black female teachers committed to implementing and reflecting on our antiracist work. Through communities of practice and the critical dialogue framework, we will provide an environment for one another to share our experiences implementing anti-racist education. We will spend a couple of months engaging in dialogue together to support our praxis. With critical reflection, we will look for themes that emerge through the conversations as well as develop a protocol for building an antiracist community of practice. Economic, social and cultural relations make cooperation between the two countries’ (Spain and Morocco) a priority for the EU and both countries governments. Likewise, deepened changes happened in production systems and consumption patterns had seriously damaged and weakened the craftwork sector. The promotion of local crafts, and its economic value, and the cooperation with the north of Morocco has been an important issue for the Andalusian government in recent years. The main aim of this work is to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the Tangier - Tetuan region craftworks sector in order to develop accurate communication and promotion plans. From the knowledge of the real identity, the sector could be repositioned. Promotion and communication could be a spur to traditional sectors, such as crafts. Competitiveness requires "the culture of communication, the cooperation between different companies to build powerful territory brands and maintain the establishment confidence and effectiveness relationships among agencies and organizations". The lack of previous literature addressing how Tangier craftwork promote and communicate its value to their stakeholders, has conducted the study to an exploratory approach with a double dimension: internal, Tangier craftwork sector image, and external, Andalusia image of the sector in Tangier. Different interviews were conducted with Andalusian partners involved in the artisanal sector (9 master craftsmen and 3 institutions) and focus groups with 9 Tangiers craftsmen were developed. The result of these interviews and expert groups are reflected in a SWOT analysis which reveals a handcraft industry with a worrying wide-spread and undifferentiated identity and reluctance to innovation and new technologies. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=communication%20management" title="communication management">communication management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=image" title=" image"> image</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Moroccan%20crafts" title=" Moroccan crafts"> Moroccan crafts</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Spain-Morocco%20cooperation" title=" Spain-Morocco cooperation"> Spain-Morocco cooperation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31640/craftwork-sector-of-tangier-cooperation-communication-and-new-opportunities" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31640.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">329</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">363</span> Structural Correlates of Reduced Malicious Pleasure in Huntington's Disease</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandra%20Baez">Sandra Baez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mariana%20Pino"> Mariana Pino</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mildred%20Berrio"> Mildred Berrio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hernando%20Santamaria-Garcia"> Hernando Santamaria-Garcia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lucas%20Sedeno"> Lucas Sedeno</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Adolfo%20Garcia"> Adolfo Garcia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sol%20Fittipaldi"> Sol Fittipaldi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Agustin%20Ibanez"> Agustin Ibanez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Schadenfreude refers to the perceiver’s experience of pleasure at another’s misfortune. This is a multidetermined emotion which can be evoked by hostile feelings and envy. The experience of Schadenfreude engages mechanisms implicated in diverse social cognitive processes. For instance, Schadenfreude involves heightened reward processing, accompanied by increased striatal engagement and it interacts with mentalizing and perspective-taking abilities. Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) exhibit reductions of Schadenfreude experience, suggesting a role of striatal degeneration in such an impairment. However, no study has directly assessed the relationship between regional brain atrophy in HD and reduced Schadenfreude. This study investigated whether gray matter (GM) atrophy in HD patients correlates with ratings of Schadenfreude. First, we compared the performance of 20 HD patients and 23 controls on an experimental task designed to trigger Schadenfreude and envy (another social emotion acting as a control condition). Second, we compared GM volume between groups. Third, we examined brain regions where atrophy might be associated with specific impairments in the patients. Results showed that while both groups showed similar ratings of envy, HD patients reported lower Schadenfreude. The latter pattern was related to atrophy in regions of the reward system (ventral striatum) and the mentalizing network (precuneus and superior parietal lobule). Our results shed light on the intertwining of reward and socioemotional processes in Schadenfreude, while offering novel evidence about their neural correlates. In addition, our results open the door to future studies investigating social emotion processing in other clinical populations characterized by striatal or mentalizing network impairments (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=envy" title="envy">envy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gray%20matter%20atrophy" title=" Gray matter atrophy"> Gray matter atrophy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Huntigton%27s%20disease" title=" Huntigton's disease"> Huntigton's disease</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Schadenfreude" title=" Schadenfreude"> Schadenfreude</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20emotions" title=" social emotions"> social emotions</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74823/structural-correlates-of-reduced-malicious-pleasure-in-huntingtons-disease" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74823.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">335</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">362</span> Age Estimation Using Destructive and Non-Destructive Dental Methods on an Archeological Human Sample from the Poor Claire Nunnery in Brussels, Belgium</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pilar%20Cornejo%20Ulloa">Pilar Cornejo Ulloa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guy%20Willems"> Guy Willems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Steffen%20Fieuws"> Steffen Fieuws</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kim%20Quintelier"> Kim Quintelier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wim%20Van%20Neer"> Wim Van Neer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Thevissen"> Patrick Thevissen</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Dental age estimation can be performed both in living and deceased individuals. In anthropology, few studies have tested the reliability of dental age estimation methods complementary to the usually applied osteological methods. Objectives: In this study, destructive and non-destructive dental age estimation methods were applied on an archeological sample in order to compare them with the previously obtained anthropological age estimates. Materials and Methods: One hundred and thirty-four teeth from 24 individuals were analyzed using Kvaal, Kvaal and Solheim, Bang and Ramm, Lamendin, Gustafson, Maples, Dalitz and Johanson’s methods. Results: A high variability and wider age ranges than the ones previously obtained by the anthropologist could be observed. Destructive methods had a slightly higher agreement than the non-destructive. Discussion: Due to the heterogeneity of the sample and the lack of the real age at death, the obtained results were not representative, and it was not possible to suggest one dental age estimation method over another. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=archeology" title="archeology">archeology</a>, <a
